From the Bioware Blog today, which is N7 day ....
"It’s tough keeping a big secret (and we really struggled to keep this one a surprise) but now it’s official: today we announced the Mass Effect Legendary Edition! We’ve heard (for years!) your requests for a Mass Effect remaster, so we’re super happy to finally reveal that we’ve been working on a remastered edition of the Mass Effect trilogy.

Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, plus promo weapons, armors, and packs – all remastered and optimized for 4k Ultra HD. It will be available in Spring 2021 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, with forward compatibility and targeted enhancements on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. More information to come in the new year!

Meanwhile here at BioWare, a veteran team has been hard at work envisioning the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe. We are in early stages on the project and can’t say any more just yet, but we’re looking forward to sharing our vision for where we’ll be going next.

For me personally, Mass Effect represents years of work and countless special memories, so every year I feel incredibly fortunate to celebrate N7 Day with players around the world. Thank you so much for supporting us over the years. I can’t wait to continue our adventure together – revisiting our favorite memories in the Mass Effect universe, and creating brand new ones!"
So, who's looking forward to that?

@BruceCM I will definitely pick it up at some point. I wasn't a big fan of the combat, but liked the characters and the story. Just wish your actions decided the ending, rather than getting multiple choice.

I own all three games on PC but definitely interested in seeing how these differ. Might pick it up again if these aren't bare minimum remasters and actually have quality of life improvements unlike Burnout Paradise and NFS Hot Pursuit

I'm glad EA got around to remastering games that people actually wanted for once. Here's to hoping Dragon Age 1 and 2 are next, because I'd love to play cleaned up versions of those since I got into the series through Origins and Inquisition.

@Wargoose According to the rumors from June when this was leaked, the combat will be significantly reworked for this version, especially the first game's.

Would be looking forward to it more if it were on Switch.

But I’ll still grab it on PC, since the current versions have no proper controller support. Which means the only viable version for me at the moment is Mass Effect 3 on Wii U, since it had gyro.

Maybe EA will bring to Switch down the line.

Yeah i’m not playing that on my PS4. These longer games is much better in handheld where you can play where and when you want. But it’s EA so no Switch port of course🤦🏻‍♂️

I've had the trilogy on PS3 for awhile now but haven't played it except for a couple of minutes just to try it out. After gaming on the Wii U and now the Switch where you don't need the TV and can watch sports WHILE playing, it is just too hard to go back to play anything the regular way. I really want to play these games and will hopefully get around to it one day. Any idea about how long they usually take to beat?

I wonder how much they'll have redone the first game. ME2 and ME3 still look and play fine. They just need a few minor graphical tweaks to look modern. ME1 though is incredibly rough. From the gameplay mechanics, to the texturing, to the ridiculous copy-and-pasted environments on the various planets (not the main story locations, I mean the random bunkers you find when exploring planets. They're all the same). Then the clumsy controls of the Mako, and the very dated looking planet surfaces.

If they really do remake all of that stuff, so that ME1 looks and plays like ME3 does, this will be an awesome edition, and incredible value for money.

What's everyone's favourite DLC?

20-25 hours for a pretty full playthrough of ME1, @Xyphon22.... Maybe a bit more if you really want to do everything or whatever 35-45 for ME2 & 40-50 for 3.

@BruceCM I'd have loved the opportunity to play through the trilogy again on Switch. But I'm not rebuying on PC. My computer could easily run it at top settings and I still don't really care. I wanted these games on Switch, so I could play them where ever I wanted. The last "new" ME was a bad joke. So I have little hope that they can deliver a new experience worth my time.

@Xyphon22

The core campaigns are like 20-25 hours, but then there's the DLC. ME1 only had a couple of fairly small DLC. So that adds about 5 hours maximum.
ME2 and ME3 both have like 3 or 4 quite big DLC. They probably nearly double the total playtime. So ME2 and ME3 would probably both be around 40 hours for everything.

I replayed the trilogy last December, and playtimes were:
Mass Effect 1: 24h
Mass Effect 2: 34h
Mass Effect 3: 41h

And I did all side quests and DLC.

I'm glad I haven't played it for a while! I won't remember most of what happens in ME1, especially. It'll hopefully feel like a new game. Especially if the graphical upgrade is significant.

I never could get into Mass Effect 1 when I played it at launch, just wasn't for me. Going to try the trilogy again when the remaster gets released and hope this time will be different, as my taste in games has definitely changed since then.

ME1 was a pretty rough game. Most of it was developed before they were bought by EA, so they were working on a smaller budget than ME2. That really showed in the clunky gameplay and graphics. The whole story and RPG mechanics side of things was great though. The game could really become brilliant with a visual facelift.
It definitely has the best story of the 3 games.

Maybe not quite as big a graphical upgrade as some people hoped. This is clearly a PS4/Xbox One game rather than PS5/Series X. From everything they've said and shown, it basically looks like they've just made the entire trilogy have the graphics and gameplay of ME3. That sounds good to me.

ME1 clearly has the biggest improvements though:

Some gameplay from ME1 seems to have leaked on youtube. Looks fairly good but, like I said previously, clearly PS4 quality at the most. Definitely not PS5. It basically looks like ME1 with the graphics of ME3.

It's 'forwards compatible', so there isn't (at least yet) any PS5 or Series S/X version .... They said they don't plan any enhancements for those platforms, although they also say there'll be some due to the hardware, etc

@BruceCM

It's quite clear from their interviews that they don't intend to make a PS5/Series X version at all.

They stuck with using Unreal Engine 3, the engine it was originally created in, rather than upgrading to Unreal 4. So I think they pretty much improved it as much as was possible given that limited toolset, and a next gen version just wouldn't really add anything else.

Higher resolution and higher framerate is a good enough improvement for me though, so I'll get it on Series S!
