Dwarfs!? is a good alternative to Dwarf Fortress. Not free though

Downloaded a little game called Dwarf Fortress and it looks like it has so much potential, but it's crazy confusing! There's so much going on and so much to remember that I lose track a lot of the time. I guess I only enjoy traditional games to a certain extent. lol
I absolutely love playing Dwarf Fortress. It kicks my backside, but it's so satisfying. It's a gaming marvel the amount of detail goes into each generated world (and every single named inhabitant).
I trust you downloaded the "Lazy Newb Pack"? It makes Dwarf Fortress so much easier.
Firstly, it simplifies graphic pack installation allowing you to play with several different tile sets (or the original ascii if you want to avoid graphic conflicts or if you're a masochist) at the click of a button.
Secondly, it comes with a utility that greatly simplifies dwarf management so you don't have to spend so much time clicking through menus just to change your milker dwarf into a carpenter.
Even then, it's still difficult to get a foothold in a fortress, but I still enjoy it, and would recommend it to anyone (as part of the "Lazy Newb Pack", mind you). The comic factor alone of having a giant ogre bellow his name at you, and 5 seconds later, you read that he's now unconcious on the ground as a dwarf slowly chokes the life out of him with a pair of trousers is extremely potent.
It's supposed to be tough (but at least those utilities I mentioned makes it easier to handle)
The only problem is that it's very CPU intensive - and I belive, it is optimised for a single core machine. No-one owns a computer that can run a 'Dwarf Fortress' fortress for more than 5 years, or a generated world for about 1900 years. There's plenty of optimisation to be done.
