EA Games executive vice president Patrick Soderlund says publisher won't stop until it dethrones Call of Duty to become industry leader in the first-person shooter market

In the lead-up to Battlefield 4's launch next month, EA Games executive vice president Patrick Soderlund has spoken out to say the publisher won't quit until it dethrones Call of Duty from its post as the industry's top-performing shooter series

"Competition is good. It brings the best out of people," Soderlund told MCV. "If there was only Battlefield or only Call of Duty, then the development teams might have been a little bit more content. We don't look at them necessarily and mimic what they do."

"But we think about them. Maybe they weren't thinking about us much when we made Battlefield 3, but I can tell you, they are thinking about us now. They need too [sic]," he added. "We made a dent in the FPS market and we took share from them. And I am not going to give up until I’m No.1 and I am going to make sure I'm No.1."

Soderlund said EA is spending a "ton" of money on this effort, with development teams "killing themselves" every year to create compelling products.

"I want to give our consumers the best I can. We will strive to be No.1. If I said: 'No.5 is probably fine,' it's hard for people to rally behind that message," Soderlund said. "But I wouldn't say we could be No.1 if I didn't think we could. I think I have the right team, the right product, and the right strategy to get there."

Activision's only major shooter franchise is Call of Duty, while Electronic Arts has Battlefield and Titanfall. Soderlund said EA feels no pressure to release Battlefield on a yearly basis because, "to me, it is about a balanced portfolio." EA recently took Medal of Honor out of its rotation after 2012's Medal of Honor: Warfighter fell below sales targets.

Battlefield 4 launches October 29 for current-generation consoles and PC, while Call of Duty: Ghosts releases seven days later for the same platforms on November 5. Both games will be released as launch titles for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November.

Ghosts releases later. Remember when the Wii U released before Xbox One and PS4? They're going to be better. They're taking time. And have you SEEN Ghosts multiplayer? That was insanely next-gen! Battlefield 4 probably can't do anything about that! Mainly because Soderlund said he "wouldn't copy anything". EA has really stepped up to challenge a king here.

I have nothing really to say about myself.

And what are they gonna do for Nintendo fans? Give them half-donkeyed ports and brush them off. Yeah, good luck with your "dethroning" EA.

Too Bad neither Activision or EA care enough about the Wii U audience and that has nothing to do with dethroning in the first place. But honestly who cares when Both series are about to get pushed out to relative pasture in favor of Titanfall and Destiny.

Yeah good luck with that EA... I'll be playing Ghosts on my Wii U this fall since Activision actually cares about Nintendo.

Activision cares more. They're actually releasing their games on Wii U. EA doesn't even care about the 3DS audience.

I guess that is true. I'm hoping new EA leadership changes the things over there.

Why regardless of their politics involving the Big 3, EA actually makes good games.

Dun worry. If they go out of bankrupt, everyone else will buy their franchises and studios.

Good thing that won't happen anytime soon. Though we already know who would buy them if they were to go Bankrupt.

While I don't want EA to go away, I do hope the new leadership works to better their reputation. In the last couple of years they've drawn hate from all sides for their business policies and many other things (they weren't voted "worst company in america" two times in a row for nothing you know).

But honestly who cares when Both series are about to get pushed out to relative pasture in favor of Titanfall and Destiny.

...Am I the only one who doesn't see the big deal with Titanfall? All I see is Call of Duty with mechs, and it's not even going to have a single player campaign. It looks like it could be fun, but the praise it gets is just insane.

Destiny looks pretty good tho.

EA is like the Jerry Bruckheimer of video games. Seriously.

Now, I'll leave this thread alone for you all to enjoy.

Dude prodces enjoyable films right. You say this like Nintendo is Spike Jones, instead of DreamWorks.
