I'm making my way through archdragon peak and mostly just farming. Guys, if you really want a good farming spot, the Grand Archives are perfect. Ignore the one making the rounds that involve killing 3 knights at a certain area. I made 800k souls in an hour running around the beginning area of the archives over and over. Note that I had the silver covetous ring, shield of want, and symbol of avarice all equipped to boost my soul output.
@Peek-a-boo: I didn't pay too much attention to my level, but I think it was around 70-80? I never intentionaly farmed souls, and I didn't find myself having a hard enough time to need to grind.
I'm about halfway through my second playthrough now and I'm trying to find the secret areas I missed the first time. Gonna do my best to get all trophies on this one.
Trophies can be tricky because some, like acquire all sorceries, can only be obtained if you use a boss soul to have Ludleth transpose it for you. And it's annoying because, as you know, there are multiple items you can choose from with the one boss soul, so getting them all will require multiple playthroughs.
@Operative: As far as I can tell, the boss souls give two items each, so it should take two playthroughs to get the boss souls items, and there are three trophies for different endings, so I'll be playing that much anyway. The thing that's going to take me the longest is probably getting the materials for covenant rewards, some of which are sorceries, pyromancy, etc. I don,t play too much of the co-op/invasion side of the series, so it'll take me a while to get the right amount of each covenant material.
@Peek-a-boo: I got all the trophies for Bloodborne, so I want to attempt it for Dark Souls 3 at least. As for the mimics, it does seem like there are a lot more this time, and they seem a bit easier to fight this time round too.
@GrizzlyArctos: The Defiled Watchdog of the Old Lords continues to deny me the Platinum trophy on Bloodborne.
I didn't put much effort into my vitality towards my character, therefore one swipe from its attack knocks my health bar all the way down. Farming for blood vials also got pretty old, and pretty swiftly too.
I am more keen on replaying Bloodborne rather than beginning NG+ on Dark Souls III.
As for the Boss Souls, I give them to the Lord who sits upon a throne at Firelink Shire for his decent rewards. They are starting to get a little bit expensive now though...
I am really pleased to hear that you perceive the later areas as being some of the best in the series, and that you also thought the start was slow going (and surprisingly linear) too.
Farron Keep and beyond must surely be the lowest point of the game; so dreary and dull and joyless.
Agree on Farron Keep. Most of the foresty areas are quite rubbish. And most of the underground areas, as is common in Dark Souls.
I think the high wall of Lothric and then Lothric castle are really cool areas. And then archdragon peak looks good but haven't got there yet.
I finally completed my first game. Since I was overleveled, I was never getting summoned for the covenants, which meant I had to farm all the items. It was simply awful, especially the shackles.
But on the other hand, a friend and I accidentally discovered how to duplicate items, so that was fun
@Dezzy: I would argue that the game doesn't 'start' until you defeat High Lord Wolnir and opening the grand door beyond to the fantastic moonlight view of Irithyll of the Boreal Valley.
I had a bit of a hard time motivating myself to slog through Farron Keep, Cathedral of the Deep AND the Catatombs of Carthus. The reward was worth it, but having to stumble through three big areas that wasn't overly inspiring made me lose interest for a while.
Work and real life has grinded my progress to an abrupt halt at the moment, unfortunately.
Also, Ratchet & Clank is a much better 'pick up and play' kind of game too!
@Peek-a-boo:
I liked Irithyll although it felt like it was out of Bloodborne and I didn't really like that it just kind of popped up out of nowhere. I like environmental continuity. Which Dark Souls 1 was brilliant about.
I haven't finished it yet but it seems like you don't go in that castle outside the firelink shrine at all. That's annoying. I don't like things to just be background decoration like that. And then Irithyll you don't see at all until you get there. They should've had you go to that castle instead.
@Dezzy: I'm almost certain it's Lothric Castle. I've just spent some time looking over the locations of different areas based on where you can see them from other areas, and from what I can tell Firelink Shrine is behind Lothric Castle while the view from the High Wall of Lothric is the front view. Also, you can see the Cathedral of the Deep from the Wall, and looking at the castle from the Cathedral, it looks very similar to the castle as viewed from Firelink. Lothric can also be seen when you're crossing the bridge to Irythyll and you turn around. The structure looks the same as the view of the castle from both Firelink and the Cathedral.
I wonder why the colour looks so different. If it's right, that does fit with the Dark Souls rule of everything you can see, you can go to. They really did make it tricky to decipher all this stuff though. It took me quite a while to realise Lothric was that place you could see high above you from down in the forest and on the long bridge.
got frustrated with those numerous Pontiff Knights at Central Irithyll
I was having a lot of trouble with them to start with. I then switched to a small quick weapon (short sword) and they became incredibly easy. If you get a weapon that you can get about 4-5 swings out of from your stamina, you can easily just kill them in 1 quick combo.
If you're interested, a brilliant short sword is the Dark Sword. Doesn't look that good to start with but it upgrades very cheaply and becomes increasingly powerful quite quickly.
I found the Irythyll Straight Sword to be a good sword for quick slashing. You get it by beating the ice swordsman just before the first Road of Sacrifices Bonfire. It's outclassed later, but it was my main weapon for a good long while.
After stumbling past this rat-infested tunnel (near where you say 'hello' to a certain friendly companion), I enter this area where there's at least eight or nine Jailers plodding around in a confined circle.
Taking away the health bar is maddening. I lost 23,000 souls due to that blooming part too...
I've finished the game twice, and am now on my final playthrough to get the final achievement (rings).
Speaking of unused or possibly future areas, there's an area I can't identify. If you stand at the ledge after Vordt, to the left you can spot irithyll and archdragon peak in the distance. If you move the camera directly right of that past some distant mountains, you can see a town/city that you never visit. Pretty interesting.
