While I'm firmly in the camp that the NX is a home console releasing this year, you are right.
Stopping production does not mean Wii U's are suddenly gonna dry up, or that it'll necessarily mean a new console releases this year. Though this news isn't going to do much for sales of Wii U's if people think it'll be dropped by the end of the year.
@Octane: well why would they cease it if they were planning to really support it post 2016?
Well if they've got 5 million + units sitting in storage... (before someone says something stupid: I'm not saying Nintendo have 5 million Wii U units ready to be packaged or shipped, I'm just acknowledging the possibility).
Although 5 million probably isn't enough, 7 or maybe 8 million would be enough for a couple more years at the current rate (factor in some extra for Zelda and after their next console launches)
This forum, though I still marginally love it, is full of apologists.
Most people here are so afraid to accept what is right in front of them. They hide behind "it's only speculation" and "this doesn't equal that" ad nausea. And if anyone without a life would care to keep track, I'd wager these people are wrong well over half of the time. I saw it go down with the MetalDave leaks, and here we are again. @shaneoh makes me laugh. @Octane is... uhm... inconsistent. I don't know. @DefHalan is really into denying facts and accepting that anyone else can be right. It's always the same people denying, denying, denying, until they are proven wrong. Even then they aren't big enough to admit they were short-sighted.
That ain't good.
Wake up and smell the facts. No company in its right mind is going to:
A) Let something like this leak and not IMMEDIATELY do something about it, especially if it isn't true. You want to keep selling Wii Us, Nintendo? Well, you do realize some of the biggest gaming news sites on the web are running stories that you're stopping its production soon, right? Might wanna get on that. If it isn't true, you may want to let the world know. If it doesn't mean the NX is launching this year, you may want to let the consumer know.
B) Not release a new system immediately after (or right before) its old one stops being made.
Yes, I know it's your precious Wii U and precious Nintendo memories and all that. I get it. I own a Wii U and a 3DS and all this stuff. But it's time to just start accepting what is happening instead of just closing your eyes and screaming " No, no, it can't be."

The Nikkei article came out like five hours ago, and in the middle of the night in Japan nonetheless.
Not saying the article is false or anything but if Nintendo were to have a response to the claim the window is still open for them to do so. I believe it took them a day or two to respond to the Android claims.
@cookiex: it's Nikkei. They're the wall Street journal of Japan. They're basically the second most official source on this stuff besides the actual companies themselves.

Did I ever say I doubted the source or the claim within it?
All I said was it's only been five hours since the article was published and it came out in the middle of the night in it's native country. If the company had a response they would do that in the morning.
I don't know... what is ridiculous is your huge obsession with what the NX is. It's like you almost can't live another day without knowing what the NX is.
I've already said it in the other thread, but I hope what the NX is makes people happy. Me, you (especially you), everyone.

It's not like Nintendo announced the NX to build up hype or anything. Iwata did so to quell the fears that Nintendo would be dropping out of the consoles industry. Now a lot of people are going crazy AND apparently setting themselves up for failure.
So yeah, maybe it is your fault. Don't get me wrong, I too want to know what the NX is. I'm just not going to keep on... mentioning it all the time. (that's a very, very, very, very mild way of putting things, mind you).

How dare I actually wait for actual confirmation from Nintendo instead of just looking at rumors. And before anyone goes on about how I'm wrong and starts bringing up "facts", I am not denying the idea of the NX being released this year. It could very well happen. But I don't think I should be ridiculed for waiting until Nintendo actually says something.
