I don't really agree at all TBH. I'd argue that the touch screen controls in the DS Zeldas weren't at all "gimmicks". That if you remove touch screen controls you remove the main interesting thing about those titles. They're literally games built around drawing paths and taking notes, the Switch doesn't really lend itself to that.
Sure in portable mode it gets close but even there the Switch isn't a "single hand" console, the screen is not vertical and it's a bit different without the stylus. I'd almost go as far as saying that IOS/Android are the better platforms for Nintendo to revisit the DS Zeldas on. If they were to do it.
In contrast Skyward Sword isn't really defined by Wii specific features to the same degree. Sure it's a heavy part of the sword combat, more than touch is for combat in the DS Zeldas. But a lot of the motion control in the game could easily be replicated with the gyro in the Switch.
Also, when you think about it, the Switch also has what are effectively a pair of Wii Motion Plus controllers in the box with the pair of JoyCon. It's only the portable mode where it wouldn't quite translate 100%.
Instead of doing the obvious thing and crank out more Zelda games, I'd be neat if they actually remastered (and localised) some of the more unknown Nintendo games from that era. Both The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls and The Mysterious Murasame Castle share development cycles with Zelda games. The former sharing the engine with Link's Awakening (and some consider it to be a ''spiritual predecessor''); and the latter having a similar development cycle, but with the original Legend of Zelda instead.
Would be neat if they could release these older games like this in a Tokyo RPG Factory fashion; just have a dedicated team working on remakes. Earthbound and the other Mother games come to mind as well. They're perfect for a modern makeover like this too.

Hackers have added traditional controls to those games by modding the DS roms actually.
The traditional controls are better for the mundane stuff like movement and attacking. Plenty of puzzles do require the touch controls though, so you couldn't remove those entirely.
Unless The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD get a second chance, a Skyward Sword HD remake would be most likely.
It was the last "classic Zelda-gameplay" mainline 3D Zelda. It was the last big Zelda game that was never released in HD. And the Wii Motion Plus gyro and Wiimote pointer controls can be ported to the abilities of the Switch's Joy-Con's, the game would control the same, but it would look so much better.
If you ask me, Skyward Sword HD should have been a Wii U launch title.
You know, Twilight Princess released on Gamecube and Wii. And Breath of the Wild released on Wii U and Switch. But Skyward Sword did not release on Wii and Wii U unfortunately, only on Wii.
Hopefully remakes of the Oracle games are next when it comes to remakes/ports. Though, I'd imagine it'll probably be Skyward Sword,.which I'd be happy with too.
Probably unlikely but I would really like a release of the CD-i games with all 3 on one cartridge. I know people say they are terrible but I would still like to play them without spending hundreds of £s on eBay. Maybe they could market it like a grindhouse or B-movie type thing: The Legend of Zelda: CD-i Collection - so bad it's good! Even then they'd probably worry about it sullying the brand but I bet a fair few would buy it out of curiosity.
So with the rumors floating around of a 2nd zelda game coming this year( I think they said 2d eshop game ) what are we thinking its going to be? I've been trying to think what type of 2d game they'd bring but I'm not sure. ALBW maybe?

It was actually a pretty popular theory before the launch of the game. A lot of commentary was made on the idea of Skyward Sword being delayed to launch alongside the "Wii HD". I think ultimately you're probably right, Nintendo might've done better if it had been delayed for launch alongside Wii U. Both because Skyward Sword didn't perform that well on Wii anyways and the Wii U at launch was in desperate need of at least one killer app.
But I can also remember the outrage over the thought of it at the time. So swings and roundabouts.
