We are in 2017. All other consoles have this option.
Why should I waste 50 hours on a game (Zelda) when there is a chance that my save games can be corrupted?
I have already got the game itself corrupted.
Fun fact: SD cards are not 100% reliable.
Also, what happens if my Switch gets broken? If I send it to repair, there is a chance they will wipe the Hard Drive memory. Without save backup, everything will be lost.
There are too much possibilities when the save game can be wiped/broken/corrupted. How is that no one talks about it? How is that possible that people continue buying this device and for months it is #1 best selling console?
People were talking about it a lot at launch time. It was yet another Nintendo "scandal". Yes most consoles have save backups to USB and/or cloud. Nintendo 3DS has allowed backups to PC for ages. WiiU allowed backups to USB. So Nintendo's not new to the idea, however, with their focus on online gaming, save scumming has been an issue on the prior consoles and I believe they're trying to avoid that on Switch.
As a result, many of us have theorized that cloud saves will be a part of the paid online service, but that they won't allow local USB saves (to prevent save scumming) so I think nobody's talking about it because we're patiently waiting for E3 and the probably paid service details to be released to see if cloud saves are part of that like we expect.
Reggie was asked point blank about cloud saves in an interview in the days after Switch's launch and his response was "Wouldn't that be great?" Which sounds like a fun PR way of saying "Quiet, we're not ready to announce that."
If they do NOT announce cloud saves as part of the paid service, THEN you will see renewed complaining here
@DTMOF84 I think that was confirmed to be a reactivation of the save data when logging into the account, (on the local machine) not an actual download of the saved data.
Whilst I hope to see some form of back-ups, I hope its not just restricted to Cloud saves that require payment. I've already seen first hand the relief at discovering long played save files survived a hard drive failure.
@FX102A While I very much want to see local backups outside of having to pay to back up your saves, I'm also not expecting it. Save scumming is just too big a problem, and with Nintendo having so many online focused games this time around, I just can't see them allowing that possibility to be open. Yes, if the character data is stored server-side it can't be tampered with openly, but if one thing has become painfully true it's that it doesn't matter what it is, if you allow people access into any part of a system within 2 days someone somewhere in the world will have a repeatable exploit out for it.
I'm not sure in PS4/XB1 how they're addressing that, TBH.
@NEStalgia Save scumming.. Why would Nintendo care about that? It's your decision to do with the game what you want. If people want to go through the trouble of making back-up files just to save scum, let them.
Yeah, save scumming is using your backed up saves to overwrite new saves. Splatoon on wiiu stored character data locally so players would scum to rank up to S by just overwriting saves after losing, and cheating past Spykes gear lottery by loading the old save before buying
