Topic: What is the Switchiest game on Switch?

What game do you feel defines what the Switch is all about?

I say it's ARMS. It's a goofy, fun little game meant to be played with friends and takes advantage of just about all of Switches special features. And the motion controls work fantastically well.

How about you? What's the first game you think of when you think of the Switch?

1-2 Switch has Switch in the title, so it's the switchiest.

Now arguably part of what makes the Switch great is that you can have games like BotW and Bayonetta on a portable. For me that's not really unique to the Switch because I had that with the Wii U. But being able to easily bring party games to a games night? That's kinda unique to the Switch.

So for me it's probably the Jackbox Party Pack. Because I've taken it to a games night and it's by far the closest I've come to being one of the people in the Switch commercials. Especially given that bringing it somewhere, even for a large group, doesn't require any organisation at all. If you have WiFi and everyone has a phone? Bring a Switch with one of those packs and you have what you need for an 8 player multiplayer party game.

Switchiest game has to be zelda botw for me.

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Uses single Joy-Con extremely well and utilizes optional motion controls very well. It's the perfect way to display console-leveled games with local multiplayer.

Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill

The Switchiest games for me are all those that can be played in TATE mode. Shoot 'em ups and pinball.

Playing in handheld mode horizontally, switching to vertical tabletop mode, switching to the TV for some horizontal action on the big screen then turning your TV on its side and switching to TATE for some huge screen action, which is as good as it sounds but better. It's a superb feature and I make the most of it. This is what makes the Switch the Switch for me.

Breath of the Wild. The Switch was basically a Breath-of-the-Wild-playing-device for the first years, and aside from a few games like DK Tropical Freeze, still is.

Breath of the wind is the switchiest game. You can explore the open world at home then while you are on the go play those shrines. Or you can mark points of interest on the map while you are on the go and then explore when you get back home.

As much as I love BOTW, there's no way it can be the Switchiest game when it plays EXACTLY the same on the WiiU.

Personally, I go with ARMS.

Im inclined to say Pinball FX3. Great HD rumble, single joycon in TATE mode, they rebuilt every table to make handheld 60fps, seamless touch controls... not exactly Nintendoey but its damn switchy imo

Zelda: Breath of the Wild is, IMHO, the best advert for the Switch, but it's not the Switchiest game. And you could say the same for Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart and many of the other great first-party titles to hit the system so far.

If the Switch is supposed to be fun, accessible, portable and local-multiplayer friendly, then ARMS is a great shout. Unique IP, designed for local multiplayer, motion controls, split joy-cons - all that jazz. I'd throw SnipperClips into the mix too, as it's all about sitting down with a friend and working together.

I own neither...

@JasmineDragon isn't that something you can't judge for anyone else? If the handheld/console hybrid option is the main unique feature for someone, they could very well find BOTW the switchiest game. Maybe someone even likes the motion controls to add to that?

Name an exclusive or go home. I'd say it's a toss up between 1-2 Switch, Snipperclips, and ARMS, but I could never bring myself to accept 1-2 Switch, and I still don't have Snipperclips, so it has to be ARMS, which is awesome and unique and a Switch essential.

I don't see why it has to be an exclusive. It's a vague and ill-defined kind of thread topic for sure so we're all going to read into it differently. But the Switch is a fairly unique piece of hardware so even non-exclusive content can be very different on the Switch. Possibly even to the point where it defines the console for some people.

In the same way that Tetris for a lot of people defined the GameBoy. Tetris wasn't and still isn't just on the GameBoy, there was a deal made for sure but it was never exclusive to the Gameboy. Even so if you were to ask people what the "GameBoy-est GameBoy game" was a lot of people, probably the majority, will say Tetris. I don't see why BotW can't be to the Switch what Tetris was for the Gameboy in this context.

...... even if I think something like the Jackbox Party Pack kinda defines what the Switch is about more

I think Snipperclips probably takes the prize (you basically play as waddling Joy-Cons), but I'd give honourable mentions to Celeste. The creator said he thought of it as a sort of souped up GBA game, and I think it matches the Switch perfectly. You've got more power and screen real-estate than an actual GBA, but can still play it tucked up in bed, grasped between your palms.

Breath of the Wild, despite being identical to the Wii U version, also works as a poster child for what's great about the system. Obviously you want the full screen experience, but I know that if I had to sit down in front of the TV, boot up the console, wait for the CD to spin up to speed and go through all the loading screens every time I wanted to play it, I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much. The Switch makes jumping back into the game almost as easy as opening a book, which is pretty significant in my eyes.

Honestly really, any local multiplayer that uses single Joy-Con and motion controls fits into a Switch ethos extremely well. Mario Kart, ARMS, Mario Tennis, Smash, whatever.

Big games like BotW, Odyssey, Splatoon 2, and Xenoblade 2 can also fit in their own definition as well.

It's great, because on one hand you can totally see the Switch as a way to take console-gaming on the go. But I also see it as local multiplayer elevated to its natural evolution, with one controller splitting into two controllers and being able to have local multiplayer anywhere you want.

Do I really have to add a "this is my opinion" disclaimer to a post in a thread that explicitly asks "what game do you feel defines what the Switch is all about?"

I'm gonna go with Breath of the Wild. I don't think I'd have enjoyed the game nearly as much had I not been able to play it on my commute, or take it to a friend's house and play it alongside them. Playing what is perhaps Nintendo's biggest game ever, on the go? That was probably the defining moment of the Switch so far for me.

I mean, they don't really paticularly emphasize what makes the Switch the Switch, but when I think of the console, I think of Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey, Zelda BotW, and Xenoblade 2. To me, those are the big, absolutely must own titles on the console and I identify with the most as games on Switch.
