I think we're in agreement here, I was mentioning Sony specifically, simply because they're a rights-holder on Blu Ray tech, but you're right, it wouldn't have mattered who it was, Nintendo would have avoided it just to avoid extra production costs. Having said that Compact Disc has no license cost attached as Philips made sure not to attach royalties (over Sony's desires, I might add, who co-developed the standard) to that format, yet Nintendo hasn't bothered supporting that either. That would suggest they also don't regard alternate media playback on their consoles as relevant at all, even considering royalties.

As to the PS+ proponents out there, what is the monthly fee you need to pay to get "free" content?

@Sean_Aaron:
If that was your point then for sure, I 100% agree. Nintendo are definitely cutting costs by not including Blu-Ray playback. The only point I was making is that I don't think they really care that the money would partially be going to Sony. I only make that point because people always try to argue that. I think with Blu-Ray playback on the Wii U it was a pretty simple case of Nintendo thinking that in 2012-201? nobody would care. And I think they were right to think that.

And you're right that Sony is always pushing their own formats. That has always been a thing on pretty much every Sony device. Blu-Rays and MiniDisks but also UMDs, Memory Sticks and I'm sure numerous others. Hell even on the Vita they insisted on using a proprietary storage media instead of just using SD cards. They just don't ever seem to learn. /rant

I pared down my reply as I saw we were kind of saying the same thing. Sony didn't get a cut of DVD media because they backed a different (failed) standard, but Nintendo didn't do that either, you're right. I think aside from people not caring, using their games console to do things other than play their games doesn't help them as much as selling software. Makes you wonder why they ever bothered with TVii...

@Sean_Aaron: Just the standard PS+ subscriprion: you can get it monthly or yearly. Its 60 dollars a years however cou could probably get it for 50 in some places. Or monthly at around 6$ i think, not really sure since i use a yearly sub. With PS+ you get discounts as well as 2 free games a month each for your ps3, ps4 and vita. So if you own all of them you get 6 games free a month
