@Whitewatermoose Nintendo's already confirmed voice chat won't be at launch. The official site says the app doesn't come out until summer and even then it's more of a demo app until the fall.

Here's a shocker: Autumn isn't the holy season. Watch the switch sell bigly.

@Octane About GC games without analogue triggers. Mario Sunshine could use gyroscopics to aim the water. F-Zero could drift tilting the controller. Analogue triggers absence can be worked around....BUT IT AINT HAPPENING!!! I'm done dreaming and wishing.

@Whitewatermoose I think online will be available at launch but it will be missing stuff because the app isn't out. I think online between launch and fall will either be like most Wii U games online or like Mario Tennis Ultra Smash online.

@GrailUK The issue isn't really aiming water. It's about the varying degrees of water pressure.

Weren't Gamecube triggers just two points of recognition, or something like that?
Could be that the digital triggers have that same two point recognition.

Pretty much sounds like a confirmation to me, at least for purchases made from Switch onward. Why would he outright say that they have the capability of tying purchases to account and then not do it? I guess the question of whether Wii U purchases will carry over is still vague.

Purchases ARE tied to the account (Nintendo ID), whether any of the VC purchases carry over to the Switch isn't clear

So... I just saw my first advertisement for a Switch game on YouTube. It was for Super Bomberman R. WHAT IS YOUR MARKETING DEPARTMENT DOING NINTENDO?!

Exactly! Kids these days don't get hyped for a classic like Bomberman. It's one of my favourite franchises.

Making promise is easy. The hard part is keeping it.

@GrailUK It's not about the aiming in Sunshine, or the drifting in F-Zero. Aiming is done through the right stick. The analog triggers made it possible to control the amount of water you shoot; the more you press the trigger, the farther your reach is. A short push results in a quick burst of water and pressing the triggers all the way down results in Mario being locked in position to make aiming a little easier. In F-Zero you could control the amount of acceleration by using the analog triggers. At least, that was one of the possible control configurations. Digital triggers can't do that, they're essentially just regular buttons.

I feel like the system is launching in beta, and not even third parties were ready. Online services, Netflix, Eshop + virtual console, none of it ready to go.

I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. These are smart people, I can't believe they are that daft. But seriously, it seems every day we hear about another misstep with Switch. Very disheartening.

Well for a start I think you're jumping the gun about the eShop and Virtual Console. I think we can pretty much guarantee that the eShop will be up basically from day 1 given that there are indie games scheduled for the first month. Virtual Console is harder to say but you can't say it won't be there based on the information we have. Lack of information isn't confirmation of the worst case scenario.

With online features and streaming services? Since when has a console launched with everything ready to go? Consoles these days all launch in a kind of beta state. The last console that wasn't like this was the original DS which didn't have any online features outside of the games themselves.

For Gamecube VC - couldn't they just map the two levels of pressure to the two sets of shoulder buttons (i.e. L and R for a soft press, and ZL and ZR for a full press)? Z could then be mapped to the - button (as Gamecube didn't have a select button).

It could certainly work for Mario Sunshine, although it might take some getting used to. Not played F-Zero so I dunno how it would work in that case.

@Buizel The idea behing analog is that the input isn't a binary value, but a whole range of possible input values. Sunshine had a lot more input values than just ''half'' pressed and ''fully'' pressed (same is true for F-Zero). You could try to circumvent that by doing it your way, but I think that you'll end up with a product that's way less responsive than the original game.

Honestly I don't see what the big deal is with the GC VC not having analogue triggers by default. As I said in another thread it's not like those games won't work at all without it. It won't be as good but I don't think it's essential. And in any case there's no reason why the Switch can't support the GC controllers while docked or get different versions of the Joycons down the line.

They've already shown in the patents that they're thinking about different Joycons. They show versions where there's a D-Pad included but there's no reason why they can't change it in other ways. Or have entirely different control schemes. Just like there's no reason why they couldn't support Wii and Wii U controllers via Bluetooth and older controllers via USB.

While I'm glad I managed to preorder Switch last Friday, I'm starting to think that I need more info to actually purchase it at launch. I preordered at GAME so at launch I'd be able to transfer the preorder money onto something else if I wanted to.

Right now the Switch games I'm excited for:

  • BotW (has a Wii U version)
  • MK8 Deluxe (only new contents is a few characters and battle mode)
  • Splatoon 2 (the online service is mostly unknown at this point)
  • Fire Emblem Warriors (has a New 3DS version)
  • Super Mario Odyssey
