@OorWullie
I think that entire page is a load of nonsense. If only for the simple reason that Nintendo's patent applications for the Switch outline what the dock does. Every component, every detail. It's not an empty shell but it's not doing anything extra special either. If it is proprietary there's no reason for it. It'd literally be just Nintendo forcing you to buy their dock specifically for no reason.
The only processing it talks about is converting DisplayPort to HDMI and providing power to the Switch and USB hub. There's also a power LED and sleep button. There's no mention from what I can tell of any kind of authentication or lock out chip. Nothing like that. And if it was doing something extra like that surely you'd see the signal not cut off completely or some kind of delay happen when people undock the Switch. But you don't because its not.
There's a DisplayPort alt-mode for USB Type C that allows you to carry power, USB 3.0 and DisplayPort. I'd wager that the Switch is following that standard. Especially given that they decided to go with a USB Type C connector. If they're going standard for the connector I think its fair to assume that they're going standard with the signal also.
And because that bit of that page doesn't make sense I don't believe any of the rest of it.
(Will Virtual Console purchases transfer to and from the Switch)?
We have not shared a lot of information regarding Virtual Console. We will be sharing more information at a later day. What I can tell you is that, with the introduction of Nintendo Account, we now have the capability to tie consumers' purchases to their particular account. So that opens up a range of executions for us to address that consumer desire, that consumer need. So, we hear it, we're working on it, more information to come.
Pretty much sounds like a confirmation to me, at least for purchases made from Switch onward. Why would he outright say that they have the capability of tying purchases to account and then not do it? I guess the question of whether Wii U purchases will carry over is still vague.
@Whitewatermoose, I assume digital is cheaper to produce and easier to develop for.
Can anyone explain the difference between analog triggers and digital triggers as it is applied to real games?
I know analog is pressure sensitive. Why would Nintendo choose digital over analog? What are the benefits?
If you've played Super Mario Sunshine you could precisely control the water pressure via analog shoulder button which it couldn't do if it was digital which is basically another button.
Well Japan is getting Romance of the three kingdoms XIII with power up kit on march 30. I don't think that will leave Japan so I'll be importing. Have I mentioned how happy I am with no region lock?
Sooo just saw that Nobunaga's Ambition is also going to NS. Anybody want my Ps4 copy?

@Whitewatermoose Digital triggers are cheaper. Don't know by how much, but they're essentially just buttons, analog triggers are pressure sensitive as others explained. It means that we're probably not getting GameCube VC (if we do, only the games that don't use the analog triggers), unless they find a way to circumvent that issue. It also means that the Switch won't be a system to play racing games on. Shooters should still work, but I have no idea how many of them make use of analog triggers.

The Xbone & PS4 versions got an US & Euro release already so I can see the Ninty version getting an Euro & US release too.
@Whitewatermoose I wonder if the Switch was originally going to launch holiday 2017 while games like Project Giant Robot, Pikmin 4, BotW, etc. were going to be 2017 Wii U games filling up the first half of the year.
Here I was thinking they delayed to March because they wanted to come out guns blazing. But perhaps it really is just because they needed something big to release this fiscal year

Hmm. I completely missed that localized release then. Which is weird. I am usually on top of that. Ok well I will wait for the US release then.

Not just that, but delaying until holiday 2017 would have made the Wii U drought even worse. We haven't had a Wii U release since what? Paper Mario in October? It's likely the 3DS has very little extra to support Nintendo with in 2017 outside of what we know. So 2017 would've looked ridiculously bare if they waited until the fall to release the Switch.
Here's what I think happened:
-N wanted to originally release the Switch in fall 2016. However, software/hardware not ready for release
-N cant wait until fall 2017 due to Wii U being dead and 3DS having little left, so settle for March 2017 as latest release date with BotW as launch title.
-N will have another 'launch' of the console in September 2017 that will coincide with a number of big holiday titles, a price cut/announcement of Switch bundles and another bout of aggressive promotion. The main titles will be Mario and Pokemon which will perfectly showcase the hybrid nature of the device given the former is the major IP of home consoles and the latter is the major IP of handheld consoles
I feel like the system is launching in beta, and not even third parties were ready. Online services, Netflix, Eshop + virtual console, none of it ready to go.
I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. These are smart people, I can't believe they are that daft. But seriously, it seems every day we hear about another misstep with Switch. Very disheartening.
Where did you hear that about all of that stuff not being ready?
A random thought I had today: Does the Switch have a microphone? It's not a big deal for me but I thought about Switch having DS VC since it has touch screen but then I thought of Chocobo Tales and Spirit Tracks which both utilized the microphone. They can always skip those games but Spirit Tracks is kind of a important DS game, it's Zelda after all. I doubt there's DS VC anyways.
@Late
I haven't been able to find the video or image, but I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that there was a microphone in the system. If I manage to find the image I'll post it.
