Ask yourself this question: are you primarily playing the Switch for Switch video games or GameCube video games?
Why should we have to choose? Steam offers thousands of games released before Xbox One and PS4. Xbox One even lets you play tons of 360 games. Some Developers are even complaining that there are too many awesome classic games on Steam they have to compete against in Steam Sales. How are more software choices a bad thing? We want the Newest Hardware to be able to play our Oldest Software. It is convenient. It keeps things simple for consumers. It provides players old and new variety and the ability to play and experience more software. If people want GameCube Virtual Console, then they should voice their opinion. If people don't care for the feature, then they can voice their opinion. Either way, lets let consumers decide what they find acceptable in a product
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
If this is true, that all online lobbies must be done through a paid phone app, and that we won't be able to play online with friends until Fall when this app releases... then I will definitely cancel my pre-order. Hope this info is wrong, but doesn't look that way so far.
@BiasedSonyFan
A) I am not sold on a Switch yet, but GameCube VC might push me over.
B) I buy hardware to play Software, doesn't matter when it came out. I still play Half-Life 2 and Battlefront 2 on my new PC.
C) Designing a Video Game Platform should be easier for Nintendo than anyone else. They have been doing it the longest and cheapest.
D) Designing a Video Game Platform must be tough, but if they approached it differently, we would have gotten a different system. It is all about what priorities the company has and if thise don't match what consumers want, those consumers should voice their opinion, just like they did with the Wii U.

@WebHead@SuperWeird
Maybe we should put the pitchforks down and wait until we get some more details. For all we know this smartphone driven setup could work pretty well. And in any case we don't know what functionality will be possible without the app yet.
@DefHalan
Every design choice is going to have pros and cons. Most of the time it's more features vs increased cost but there are other parts to it. Like how making it portable (pro) meant less storage options and and less power for the price (con). Same deal with the analogue triggers. At the end of the day they can't please everyone.
And in any case if its the controller that we're complaining about? That's the one thing that the Switch can change by design. Different controller configurations is almost the entire point of this console. Sure it sucks if they don't cover one of the features you want from the start. But I don't think its a stretch to think that they might come up with more options down the line.

I really hope you can still play with friends through the system itself. Using an app for voice chat makes no sense, but it would make more sense than having to buy an app just to play with friends. That's just...why? People would already be paying to play online anyway, and then they'll be taking basic functions like that away until you pay for something else. I hope this isn't the case, but it seems like Nintendo legitimately wants us to spend as much money as humanly possible on this thing, and for no reason other than "A phone is more elegant than headphones"
It really does sound like you actually need the app just to do basic stuff. No "It's optional". He flat out said "that’s how you’ll voice chat, that’s how you’ll do your matchmaking, and create your lobby."
Can someone explain to me what matchmaking and creating lobbies means? I haven't really played online games outside of PC since the Wii. I'm assuming that's how you play with friends?

Until we know more I'm just going to assume it's bad phrasing and a fanbase hanging on every word. The Switch hardware looks great so I think people naturally want there to be some kind of catch. Not saying that it won't be as bad as it could be read into. Just saying we need more info.
For example when Facebook launched their mobile applications they could have said something similar. They could have easily praised their new mobile app and said that it was the way people will add friends, chat, post on people's walls and so on. Because that's what they thought would happen and has happened. They could have and maybe even did use the same sort of phrasing you see Nintendo use above. But that wouldn't have meant that smartphones would become the only way to access Facebook.
I like to think Nintendo isn't so crazy as to do something as ridiculous as make actual matchmaking locked behind an app. I really pray they are not, at least.

Terrible phrasing, if that's his best effort at being specific.
@Operative2-0 i think we all learned by now is that being hopeful with nintendo always ends with dissapointment. Dont do this to yourself guys. Cancel your pre orders otherwise you'll be invested even more and feel even more dissapointed with the bad messages.
I hope the switch fails im sorry guys but it needs to happen. That or a huge reform of the company. Nintendo has genius people as staff but it is sadly ran by fools. This is the reality
@DJaa It's just a game system, man. It's frustrating that they aren't clearly communicating some things, but it's not the end of the world. In any case, there are plenty of other platforms with great games out there. Or you could always get a gaming PC if you have the money, which ultimately is way superior to both the Xbox and Playstation. A gaming PC with Nintendo systems is the perfect combo IMO, unless you're really into some of the Xbox/Playstation exclusives. PC has way more exclusives than those systems do, though.
You know with the announcement of No More Heroes 3 it makes me wonder if the first two are going to be ported to the Switch as well as various Nintendo titles like the first Mario Galaxy.
@Buizel The idea behing analog is that the input isn't a binary value, but a whole range of possible input values. Sunshine had a lot more input values than just ''half'' pressed and ''fully'' pressed (same is true for F-Zero). You could try to circumvent that by doing it your way, but I think that you'll end up with a product that's way less responsive than the original game.
Was a range of input values really necessary for Sunshine? As far as I remember, there was half-pressed, which would allow spraying while running, and fully pressed, which would put Mario to a halt. If there were any intermediates, they were incredibly subtle and had no real bearing on the gameplay.
''We also think it’s a very elegant solution because if you’ve taken your switch on the go, you’ve put yourself in a hotspot, you’re looking at get a quick match of Mario Kart in, to whip out some sort of bulky, gamer headset is a bit of a challenge.''
Has he never heard of earphones with microphones built into them?
Anyway, he probably misspoke, because I can't imagine that they would lock a feature behind an app specifically for the situations when you're not at home. I mean, they're saying that it's a home experience first and foremost, so it's unlikely that the entire online experience is done through the app so that it makes playing on the go easier (and you could still argue that the smartphone app isn't the most convenient way of doing voice chat on the go).

Yes, people feeling this way should do that. It'll open up pre-order slots for all the other people who aren't freaking out about this. Seriously guys, it's about a month and a half away. Why are we reading into this so much when so little has been said?
For me personally I don't give a crap. Frankly I almost would be fine with having a Nintendo system that didn't have online play at all. All I want online for is services like Netflix and downloading content. Yes I like online modes against randoms and if they're charging for that now? Well I'll see whether I think that's worth it. But I'm not about to cancel my pre-order if voice chat is via a phone app. Because frankly I'm probably going to mute everyone anyways.....

Whether he misspoke or not he kinda has a point. If you do care about voice chat and want to play a game away from home? Your phone is probably the best device to do that on. Especially if it allows communication with your friend list when you don't have your Switch on you. Which is something that it would obviously be able to do.
If reggie mispoke and this has consequences against all the potential of the switch, reggie will simply have to go. You simply just cant do this after the Wii U failing especially in the social media era. Id be friggin upset if I was a colleague
The app thing doesn't really bother me as I never have any friends who play Nintendo, so I'll just be playing random battles which will probably be able to be done in the normal way.
If the app releases untill summer he MUST have mispoken. It is incomprehendable that the switch will be without a friendlist unti summer.
I cant say much about the voicechat solution yet but there must be something reggie is missing in that as well. How do u voiechat on a different device while listening to the game's audio?
Reggie is definetly screwing up here and i honestly think he needs to [removed] if true. He pisses me off when they got such a cool product u cannot screw up especially after what theyve been through with the wii u. You just cannot mess it up when things have so much potential. Wat a fool.
Guys, all of it is so bad we should all cancel the preorders. We should also not buy zelda ever. I so vehemently agree with whatever the vocal consensus is that we should all just burn every switch promotion ever. If you see the commercial, zap away. If you see the billboard, look the other way.
This is so bad, I'm not sure the little ones will survive these trying times. The only way we can ever make anything out of our world again is by cancelling all our preorders guys. Face it. It's that bad.
In fact, all the positive response on youtube is a conspiracy theory. The CIA wants you to use the nintendo app so they can steal all your freedoms. All of the happy people playing the nintendo switch are paid agents, sources say.
How could nintendo destroy the world like that? We'll cancel all the preorders and that will set things right!
Buy zelda on your wii u and be done with it seems like a good option to me. U wont miss much for a long time imo. Who knows the switch will fail and u may have invested in another failed product.
Do not underestimate the spread of negative messaging in this social media era. No matter how much good momentum there is.
