Here's a video that basically discusses whether the power on the Switch will be a problem for 3rd parties and whatnot. I'm sure everyone has already heard this stuff, but some positivity is nice once in a while, especially with all the Nintendoomers out there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkkX8rBwnaw

Seems there's a magnetic sensor. An example of what that could be used for is a magnetic screen cover that shuts the screen off (iPads have that feature).

I believe the magnetic sensor aids in orienting the gyrosensor. I remember reading about it back when it was announced for the Wii U.

@Octane What would abridge the draw distance?

I'm not saying the VR would be good... but I think they'll want it in the features list anyway. And I think it could be neat as a mode of playing certain games.

The main thing about low-res VR is that far, detailed objects will be hard to make out, so your game's gameplay and artstyle will have to take that into account.

Driving games will suffer, for example, as a lot of it is looking off into the distance to see the turns coming. Large landscapes full of needly pines will leave you feeling like you need glasses. Anything where you have to read in-world text will have to have very clear, large fonts. Also, it's very doubtful that the joycons will have anything near the capabilities of the vive hand controllers, so there's not going to be much 'pick it up and hold it closer to your face for a better look' stuff going on.

All that said though, I completely agree that It'll be a neat way of playing certain games. Close-up stuff will work, simple artstyles will help a lot, and outside of gaming, 360°/VR video shouldn't suffer much.

I'm going to put forward one suggestion for Switch VR that I dare anyone to try and shoot down other than 'Ew! You can see the pixels!'. Punch-Out. Punch-Out would be perfect for Switch VR.

Add to that the fact that the headset contains no electronics, probably not even a magnet like Google cardboard has, so cheap that third parties will be flogging them on eBay for six dollars. It's very low-risk, low investment to try it out. Unless it's actively disallowed by Nintendo, indie devs will be all over it.

I really hope we get at least a hint of this in the January event..

@KirbyTheVampire If you look at the comments below the article, most of them are chip engineers that agree with him, and they share the similar experience.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Admittedly I've not bothered watching that video so don't know if anything related is in it, but that little article has no quotes from Bethesda in it.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

Nintendo Switch May Not Be Powerful Enough To Run Arkane’s Prey; CPU Clock Frequency May Be Limited In Portable Mode

"There’s plenty of power-demanding elements to Prey, like the open-world environment, the recycle grenade and the incredible lighting. Is the Switch powerful enough to even run Prey?

Bare: I have no idea. There are discussions around it, but there is no conclusion yet."

You know it doesn't say that it can't but all the headlines I've seen have been sensationalist and stretching to a conclusion that isn't there. Media, sensationalise something? Never!

@SLIGEACH_EIRE You had to do this, didn't you? Always bring the bad news.

Anyways, time will tell if the Switch can run that game or not.

Haven't the Switch gotten the CPU running at the speed of light or something?

Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.

Thing consumers want more faster. Better looking faster than the previous iteration of better looking. Developers want that to sell stuff. But hardware cant keep up. So as this thing is such a small form dactor people shouls temper their expectations.

But this is also a species that looks at their $800 phone and tthink $10 is too much to pay for the time and effort went into making an ad free game so...ya know.

@Azooooz I bring the news. Good, bad or indifferent. Yesterday was the Dragon Quest XI videos.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Letting go this time.

But I want to know: if the console is easy to make a game for it or port, why should a powerful hardware matter? It doesn't matter how powerful the hardware is if there are difficulties in bringing the games to it.

When developers are going to start developing primarily for the pro and Scorpio, you can bet there's no way they're gonna make sure the switch, weaker than the base Xbox one, is able to run it. What we can hope for is remasters or third party exclusives. No one should be expecting stuff like prey to make it on there

Azooooz

@Operative You know, the most demanding games cost both time and money for the developers. Imagine if that graphically, power hungry game didn't sell well, that would be a disaster not only for the developer, but for the publisher as well.

Also, how do you know that Switch is weaker than Xbox One? Just because of that misleading article? I would say wait for Nintendo to fully reveal the system.

@Azooooz based on the so far accurate leaks we've had for a few months now.

I have a feeling that Nvidia may reveal it's new console powered by their newest Tegra chip, Tegra parker, at CES 2017 this January, which we may briefly learn about Nintendo Switch's power.

@Operative Just because the previous leaks are accurate don't mean that theirs will be. If you check the article that I have posted in the previous page, you'll know what I mean.

I think sales will have more of an impact on 3rd party support than the hardware. As long as it's close to Xbox One power (which it pretty much is confirmed to be if Bethesda is supporting it), we should be able to get most games from other platforms on the Switch. I fear though that games like Red Dead Redemption 2 will not be on the Switch. I just can't see what is essentially a gaming tablet being able to run a game like that. Only time will tell, though. If, somehow, it is as powerful as the Xbox One, we might see games like Prey and RDR 2. We do need to keep in mind that the Xbox One is somewhat dated hardware, and it was even a bit dated at the time of it's release, so there might be hope in that regard.

That's always the only issue I have with Nintendo's systems. I thoroughly enjoy how innovative their systems are, but in the process Nintendo only gamers end up missing out on some truly great games. I hope that isn't as much of a problem with the Switch. I almost wish Nintendo would give up trying to be so innovative and focus more on power. If I could have a system that had a library akin to the PS4's with Nintendo's first party content on top of that, I would be extremely satisfied. I don't need motion controls or anything like that. I just want the games.

@Azooooz The article doesn't mean anything, as a Pascal based chip would still make it weaker than the Xbox One.

@Azooooz switch is a portable. It would be very hard and costly to make a portable in the same ballpark as Xbox one.

Also, Nvidia has officially discontinued their shield line. I doubt they would resume it anytime soon.
