@XandertheWise
It's just how modern development cycles work. Same deal with day 1 patches for games and other such things. I know the gaming community more broadly is nostalgic for the "good old days" of everything being "finished" when they buy it but.... nobody works like that in software anymore
At my work we have a two week minor release cycle probably with a dozen or so issues fixed each time. A lot of the issues are behind the scenes, stuff clients wouldn't have been aware of, maybe edge cases we've picked up internally. Sometimes it's just a change to make the code more manageable or even just a straight up performance improvement
Why the short cycle? Well, because testing needs to test. If we had a longer cycle, and we used to, you end up with a huge releases and a massive testing backlog. If a client comes out with an issue? Well if it's not a breaking issue then they're probably waiting a month or two for it. Which isn't exactly confidence inspiring. Also smaller and more frequent releases mean there's less stress on everyone when the release goes out
So yeah, smaller and more frequent releases? Everyone wins
@XandertheWise
What's the negative here though? That the system has to power cycle once every few weeks? Hardly the end of the world. But the thing they're patching behind the scenes? It might well be. And now they've patched it you're not going to stumble into it unwittingly
The only reason you don't see the benefit of regular updates is because you're getting regular updates. If they didn't have regular updates I can pretty much guarantee that you'd be on here saying "I keep getting this error code in Mario Kart every time I start a match and Nintendo Support just keeps responding that they're aware of the issue"
I mean from the Wii and before it the only way any software on Nintendo's hardware got updated was when they re-printed the game. If you brought the game on day one and there was a game breaking bug in it? Tough luck. Try to avoid it. Good luck!
@Rambler
Yes, you're right. Although if we're being pedantic it technically wasn't a patch it was a save game update tool. Fairly sure it was the only game on Wii to have anything along those lines, excluding WiiWare I guess
edit: Also I remember encountering a bug in Red Steel 2. You'd progress in the game in a certain way and you could end up stuck in a loading area with no way to progress. Lost a couple of hours of progress. And because there was no way to patch the game that bug just was there for everyone. Not good
@XandertheWise for some reason, after the most recent update for Switch, i noticed some games that have framerate isseus, seen to have run better, my Bayonetta 3 is runing 60fps nearly flawless
I've never taken issue with the frequency of Switch updates.
On PS5 it's annoying because I barely turn the system on twice a year, so every time I do there's a gaggle of patches and system updates waiting for me. Takes like 30 min just to get everything up to date and by then I forgot why I even fired it up in the first place.
Windows gaming PC is the worst though. Especially since I never use mine anymore (Switch OLED = 95% game time, SteamDeck ÷ 5% game time). I'll fire that baby up and have a massive Windows update waiting for me, then another one after that. Will also have Nvidia GeForce updates, on top of Steam client updates, and then 100+ games that start updating within Steam. Oh, and let's not forget the half dozen random apps and programs that need updating too.
Like, SteamDeck isn't that bad. Even though I don't use it frequently, when I do turn it on usually it has 1 system update and about 20 or so games that start downloading updates, and that's it. Because it's a handheld with limited storage (I say "limited" but I did swap out for a 2TB SSD and have a 1TB microSD on top of that, so 3TB total), it holds far fewer games, therefore the total number of games requiring updates each time I power it on is rather manageable.
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced
@JaxonH the problem with Switch updates is contant improviments updates, and no updates that give us requested features such as themes/folders, is always improviments patchs, not features that would be good for the console
@FishyS Excuse me bub but my gaming systems from PSP to Nintendo 3DS to Playstation 4 and X Box One S i never had a problem with them being "hacked"
these frikkin constant system updates are a pain in the ass. Once is enough. I think they should be done like once every few months a year Not frikkin 2 to 3 months in a row for cripes sake
@JaxonH
I didn't complain for waiting my PS4 Slim get updated so I could do something else while my PS4 Slim being updated.
I wish I have PS5 machine.
My PS5 games are ready to be played.
@Link-Hero system updates patching has nothing to do with me being lucky with not having my game systems hacked. I never had a problem with them before in the first place.
the recent constant system updates can f off for all i care. Enough is enough like i said
