There's no need for a TV only console.

As mentioned previously, it would have to be around the same power as the portable Switch to ensure games ran across both. If it was notably more powerful it would be a separate system altogether with its own games that couldn't run on Switch.

Next gen will be out anywhere from 6-30 months from now. Until then, we've got what we've got. Ignore the bad games. Play the good ones.

Makes sense now why Nintendo didn't announce all 8 back in the September Direct, London Loop would've been unsuitable to be in a Direct given current events back then.

NoA started their Black Friday sale.

Danganronpa is only $2.99 for those that haven't bit yet.

That is an INSANE price drop.

I think Nintendo needs to make updated switch lite. They did put a oled on the switch but that’s about all they have done. I think the next big thing Nintendo does will blow us away. It will just take time.

One way or another, we'll have a new Switch model within 12 months of today.

It could be Switch 2. Or it could be Switch Lite OLED. Or it could be Switch Home (just a little $199 box that connects to the tv).

Whatever happens, one thing is certain- a new model will be in our hands by this time next year.

@JaxonH Naturally, I don't agree, but I love your optimism.

What makes you so sure?

@Magician
I wouldn't call it optimism, as a Switch Home isn't even a device I'd be interested in. I'd call it realism

2017: Switch v1
2019: Switch Lite + Switch v2
2021: Switch OLED
2023: ?????

And even going back to 3DS, the same strategy was used.

2011: 3DS
2012: 3DS XL
2013: 2DS
2015: New 3DS + XL
2017: New 2DS XL

They never go more than 2 years without a revision. Am I really to believe no new revision will release next year? That takes an awful lot of faith given the strategy they've consistently employed. New revisions keep interest high and help ward off waning momentum. Well into Switch's 7th year, am I really to believe no new revision will come? The time Switch will need a revision most? It seems to me to be a foregone conclusion.

Either they hit the gas with one final revision to carry Switch its last 2 year stretch, or they come hard with Switch 2 before allowing momentum to fall. Either way, a new model is coming.

Optimism would be saying it's for sure a Switch 2. I'm simply saying it's Switch 2, or it's Switch Lite OLED, or it's Switch Home, or it's Switch Pro, or it's Switch OLED XL, or it's Switch Lite XL, or it's some model we haven't even conceived of yet. But regardless which is the case, a new model is almost certainly coming.

The only potential scenario I see in which a new model doesn't release, is if they're planning to drop Switch 2 in 2024. But even then, there's still a good chance they release a revision as Switch would continue to sell well into next gen. Similar to how they positioned the 2DS XL before Switch released.

Read my post, I'm not suggesting that. I'm saying it'd have an equivalent portable SKU and the portable SKU would still be the main game in town. But by having a SKU where you can omit the battery and screen and potentially have more storage options (i.e. USB expansion)? You could sell it at a lower price point

A lower price point could open up new markets. It means nothing for us here because we've already brought into the platform. But there are consumers beyond these pages

Also, IMO, the ultimate Switch setup would be a console that stays at home based on a newer SoC which may or may not be portable and a Switch Micro that's super efficient with sub 5", maybe even a 480p screen. Same architecture, same games, cross play and cross buy. Idealy litterally the same machine. In the same way my ultimate PC setup would be a beefy PC at home and something smaller than the Steam Deck for portable use

I think there's a market for it. Just not in the clickbait YouTube video sense. Because I agree with you that they can't have a non-portable SKU be the best way to play games. It only makes sense as a cheaper secondary SKU

@skywake
My comment wasn't in response to yours.

If anything I was reiterating what you said previously. Some ppl think a power console is the answer. But it's not. Because one ecosystem means any console would be inextricably linked to the portable variant. Otherwise the whole hybrid concept falls apart and they're back to developing for two separate systems again.

I don't think VR is a direction they'll go. I mean it certainly makes more sense now than it did 5 years ago. But fundamentally it's a pretty limiting technology and the cost is still high enough that it can't really be a side feature.

This interested me. I've been ringing the Nintendo VR bell since they seemingly flicked a switch and turned the entirety of Breath of the Wild into a VR game. If they could do that with the biggest game they've ever made, then what is the cost? I suspect they could have done the same with Odyssey's engine, but too much of the Odyssey movement mechanics would have changed with a VR perspective. But if they're looking for a new novelty for their main IPs, VR is a strong contender, and I could easily see a new Mario game where the VR perspective has been incorporated into the game design from the get-go.

What I meant by cost is in terms of hardware. There's "VR" and then there's VR VR. Proper VR demands high refresh rate preferably OLED screens sitting behind decent lenses in a headset that can be tracked in 3D space. Ideally also with a pair of controllers that can do the same. It's well within reach but it wouldn't also be a portable console like the Switch

The way I see it there are two ways it could happen. It's either an accessory for Switch in a similar way to Playstation VR, if it was this the VR headset would pretty much be the same price as the Switch itself. Not really an easy sell, I don't think this makes sense. Alternatively they go the Quest route and do an all-in-one unit. Which could work and could possibly even dock but.... you'd lose portable play

I think VR on Nintendo will remain in the form of LABO VR for a while yet

With Pokemon released, the rest of the year seems to be being announced now. I'd imagine this week we'd get a Mario Strikers update announcement too (Mario Sports appears to be 3 waves so that'll probably be the last one). So far we've got:

  • November 28th - Switch Sports Golf update
  • December 1st - Splatoon 3 Season 2
  • December 7th - MK8 Deluxe DLC wave 3

People keep misunderstanding me in the comment, I don’t agree with emulating games just because there on another console like ps5 or Xbox, you can still buy those, pe4 as well, things that you can buy for normal prices. Older games you just can’t get, gba, wii, all that stuff, if Nintendo allowed you to play them on the switch like Xbox does banjo then I would also a agree your stealing it if you can buy it.

I’m only talking about games you just can’t buy without paying for anoverpriced console and game, that’s all.

I edited my comment so there is hopefully no more misunderstandings.

@JaxonH Wow, I hadn't seen that trailer anywhere yet. I really like how detailed the battle cutscene environments are in this one. I had also forgotten how close we are to this release. I'm really pumped to see how the new gimmick fits into the equation as well as some of the map movements/attacks that were shown.

I think Ubisoft must've seen all those "I'll wait for the inevitable 30% off sale during Black Friday" comments for Sparks Of Hope because I haven't seen it on sale at all. 22% off the Gold Edition on the eShop, but that's about it.
