I wasn't, with the silly rumors that come around, it wouldn't surprise me at all if people actually thought that was a thing.

@Octane Same here, just imagining what might be. The dock would basically need to be a Wii U without a tablet in and of itself to pull that off after all (since the Wii U can manage running all 3) with a new custom disc drive since afaik no drive on the market can handle bother GC and Wii U discs, so we're looking at a roughly 150$-200$ dock minimum retail for that. Obviously the price of a Wii U without a tablet to manufacture isn't all that expensive considering the price it was sold at but... Still not gonna happen.

Imagine a console that can run all Nintendo software through Virtual Console. It’d take so much developing time to get N64, GameCube, Wii, WiiU, GameBoy+GBC+GBA, DS, 3DS running on that thing, it probably wouldn’t be worth it to Nintendo.

Meanwhile, the new Xbox and PS5 will have backward compatibility with past consoles. Not that im complaining tho, im aware it would be a pain in the ass for Nintendo's next console to be compatible with everything that came before it

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Pokemon Direct ended up being exclusively about Home.

You mean the Wii u. It played everything except the 3ds which is not surprising. People don’t want that. The Wii u flopped. 😉

That’s not the reason it flopped though. It’s all because of the marketing. If there was a full backwards compatibility Virtual Console service, people WOULD buy it if it had all the best games. It’s just that they probably don’t want this bulky thing that has the full WiiU architecture plus the 3DS on a Switch dock/Switch in general. It’d be a bulky mess to play on. I’m not sure how much the Switch architecture is built off the WiiU’s, but considering VC hasn’t returned, I would say not much.

Imagine just re-releasing the older systems. Crazy, right?

Why do we need all these crazy backwards-compatible hijinks on modern consoles? Why do we need these weird third-party rip-off consoles? Why do we need these stupid little mini consoles? Why doesn't Nintendo just make some more N64s? SNES...es?

Seriously. They'd make bank. Even make another round of cartridges for the most popular first-party games. Not feasible to produce so many because of older parts or whatever? Fine. This would most likely be for collectors and enthusiasts like us. You don't need to make millions of them. At first, at least, until you gauge reception.

I don't know. I've always hated backwards compatibility. If I want to play an old game, I'll play it right: on the console it was designed for with the controller it was designed for. Some games buck this, but many, many games were designed with a specific console in mind. I'm sorry, but playing Mario Bros. on my 3DS just feels weird. Playing Minish Cap on my Wii U was odd, as well. I'll always go back and get the original consoles.

@SuperSpaghetti None of the Switch architecture is built off of the Wii U.

Literally none. The way their chips even interpret instructions at the most low level code format is completely different. PowerPC (Wii U) is CISC, while ARM (Switch) is RISC.

I bought a Wii u specifically for VC and a handful of exclusives a little over a year ago. It was used obviously but it's been a god send in terms of whats available vc wise, plus wii backwards compatibility (not that it really mattered since i own a Wii anyway). Mind you, i had the switch since launch but the Wii u has so many classics available it's a must own with the switchs lack thereof. This year and next I'm going to be buying 1-2 Wii u vc games per month to build up my classic library. As much as i love the switch, I mean it's my favorite system of all time, it's really lacking in the classics dept. Especially considering how many great vc titles were available on the Wii 2 gens ago. So i have my switch for new and ported software, and my Wii u for a few exclusives and a boat load of awesome vc games. Happy to have both hooked up and ready to go at any moment depending on how i feel.

Quote for truth. People complained about the vc pricing and that they wanted new games VC is not a selling point. It is an added feature. Nintendo finally got that with NSO. Besides VC will always hit a brick wall due to licensing. Nobody is going to pay for hardware BC and it just isn't worth the ROI for Nintendo.

Probably Pokemon Sleep integration.

@Ryu_Niiyama
The VC pricing overall was not terrible. My only experience with it was on 3ds and my biggest complaint was lack of games. Now that there's a account system in place (that you can also tie to last gen 3ds and wiiu) there's really no excuse not to have a unified VC. (Ex star tropics was only on wiiu VC so why not on 3ds?)

I'll keep saying it till I turn blue in the face, tying the classic games to an online sub is a bad idea. I don't play online so why should I pay for a service I'm not gonna by to use to play games I can't own and have no control over what games I have to only play them every other week due to the check in requirement.

If a Nintendo Direct happens this month or the next I have some dreams ports i would love to see like Metroid Prime Trilogy (Seriously what's taking Nintendo so long?) and a GTA Port. Hell, at this point i would even take a GTA 3 port that's how desperate for a GTA game on the Switch I am.

@GameOtaku I would be okay with the games being tied to the subscription if said subscription service had the same selection as Wii-U and 3DS's old VC.

Virtual Console was actually one of the biggest things that had me pumped for Switch at launch. I thought for sure it was coming and being able to have all my classic games on a system like Switch, legally, no hacking or piracy involved, was like a dream come true.

Switch has still more than proven itself my favorite game system ever. But the very weak showing of retro support on the console is one of the few things about it that let me down...

At this point we're gonna get Avatar 2 before we get a new general Direct.

Own up to Joy-Con Drift, Nintendo. We all know it's your fault

Well, I'm now betting the next general direct won't be until April. We shall see though.

@Ryu_Niiyama The Wii U did not fail because it had a virtual console. The VC is often cited as one of the BEST things about the Wii U. It failed because of poor marketing and a serious lack of new software.

Virtual Console is very much a selling point. It's just not THE selling point.
