Yeah, no way are they adding in Wii U && Wii / GC BC all in one. I mean, I'd love it if they do, it'd clear up my living room to not need the Wii U setup any longer to play those three systems but...

And regardless, who would want to pay for 4G for a Switch? So weird.

I'm going to toss out them doing a full reveal for Detective Pikachu 2 with a launch window seems likely too. Maybe a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon to round it out? (I can only hope)

I would welcome another Pokémon spinoff. Kinda tired of traditional pokemon at the moment

To be honest, Gamecube discs are the same size as the dock, so that'd be easy enough to do. And with Gamecube controller support already available, all that needs to be done is add some memory card slots to the dock and we'll have a new version of the Gamecube after more than ten years.

@PikPi @link3710 I'm sure it's a joke. GCN/Wii/U software isn't even compatible with the Switch, it's a completely different architecture. So they'd have to build a Wii U in the dock, or include emulation software that is capable of perfectly emulating Wii U games. Both are very (very) expensive solutions.

Octane

@DarkRula It's not that easy. Even if the dock had a disc drive; the Switcb wouldn't be able to read and run the games. The source code is completely different since it's made for a different architecture. GameCube, Wii and Wii U are PowerPC based, and the Switch is ARM.

TuVictus

I wasn't, with the silly rumors that come around, it wouldn't surprise me at all if people actually thought that was a thing.

@Octane Same here, just imagining what might be. The dock would basically need to be a Wii U without a tablet in and of itself to pull that off after all (since the Wii U can manage running all 3) with a new custom disc drive since afaik no drive on the market can handle bother GC and Wii U discs, so we're looking at a roughly 150$-200$ dock minimum retail for that. Obviously the price of a Wii U without a tablet to manufacture isn't all that expensive considering the price it was sold at but... Still not gonna happen.

Imagine a console that can run all Nintendo software through Virtual Console. It’d take so much developing time to get N64, GameCube, Wii, WiiU, GameBoy+GBC+GBA, DS, 3DS running on that thing, it probably wouldn’t be worth it to Nintendo.

Meanwhile, the new Xbox and PS5 will have backward compatibility with past consoles. Not that im complaining tho, im aware it would be a pain in the ass for Nintendo's next console to be compatible with everything that came before it

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Pokemon Direct ended up being exclusively about Home.

You mean the Wii u. It played everything except the 3ds which is not surprising. People don’t want that. The Wii u flopped. 😉

That’s not the reason it flopped though. It’s all because of the marketing. If there was a full backwards compatibility Virtual Console service, people WOULD buy it if it had all the best games. It’s just that they probably don’t want this bulky thing that has the full WiiU architecture plus the 3DS on a Switch dock/Switch in general. It’d be a bulky mess to play on. I’m not sure how much the Switch architecture is built off the WiiU’s, but considering VC hasn’t returned, I would say not much.

Imagine just re-releasing the older systems. Crazy, right?

Why do we need all these crazy backwards-compatible hijinks on modern consoles? Why do we need these weird third-party rip-off consoles? Why do we need these stupid little mini consoles? Why doesn't Nintendo just make some more N64s? SNES...es?

Seriously. They'd make bank. Even make another round of cartridges for the most popular first-party games. Not feasible to produce so many because of older parts or whatever? Fine. This would most likely be for collectors and enthusiasts like us. You don't need to make millions of them. At first, at least, until you gauge reception.

I don't know. I've always hated backwards compatibility. If I want to play an old game, I'll play it right: on the console it was designed for with the controller it was designed for. Some games buck this, but many, many games were designed with a specific console in mind. I'm sorry, but playing Mario Bros. on my 3DS just feels weird. Playing Minish Cap on my Wii U was odd, as well. I'll always go back and get the original consoles.

@SuperSpaghetti None of the Switch architecture is built off of the Wii U.

Literally none. The way their chips even interpret instructions at the most low level code format is completely different. PowerPC (Wii U) is CISC, while ARM (Switch) is RISC.
