This can only be NX can't it, I mean if I'm an owner or CEO of a game store I DO NOT want to fly to Germany for another 3DS package or Amibo character. I know what they are and do, just email me a picture.
NX however, I need to be shown and I need to understand it so I can sell it.
In other news platinum games is revealing something today posting today's date and a picture of bayonetta! Unfortunately a tweet later on said something about bayonetta 2, so that's just a PS4 XBOX release isn't it?
They might be showing it to retailers, but it doesn't mean the reveal to the general public is coming soon.
That's it, I can't take any more of this "aNXiety"!
Is it normal for retail owners to be flown out for the showcasing of a new console before the official reveal?
I'm not sure, but I would say that Nintendo might need to convince certain retailers to stock their product/give their product appropriate retail space- that would require a clear breakdown of specs, pricing, target market etc. The Wii U was a disaster and they might need to convince some that this is a Wii 2.0 rather than Wii U 2.0. It could also be that Nintendo has some special plans for stocking/marketing that needs help from retailers in terms of space etc.
Put it this way- all retailers are going to stock the Xbox/PS4 because they know they are going to sell well. Nintendo has a bit more of a blotchy history and with the NX sounding like something completely unique- some might be sceptical to stock it, but a meeting/hands on might alleviate certain concerns.

True- but even then I'd suspect that if they didn't, this event would slowly filter round. I mean let's just assume that this event is to convince retailers to stock and sell the NX. They'd need to be shown the product, the pricing, the specs, the release date etc. Whilst I'm not saying that anybody going would necessarily reveal that info, they would nonetheless have to pass that info on internally to someone in their company to prepare for online pre-orders/NX information on a webpage etc.
But I suspect Nintendo probably realise that once they let stockists know this information that the cat won't remain in the bag for much longer. So I suspect that it will be a retailer event, then a week later public/press reveal.
If NX uses cartridges then this will help stop piracy in a big way. So maybe they are trying to mend relationships with suppliers by saying "look we have done this to help combat piracy and put more money in your pockets, we appolgise for the bad marketing we did with WIIU, this time we want you opinions and and to show you guys more respect by showing you first".
This would make sense rather than show the press first as suppliers are gonna be the ones working to push NX.
@dtjive That makes sense. Especially now I think of it, Nintendo likes to have booths where you can go hands on with their handholds in stores so yeah I guess that needs a fair amount of cooperation from the retailers, and floor space management.

@DjLewe78 I never understood the whole ''cartridges prevent piracy'' argument. First of all, R4 cards are probably the most popular medium for piracy back in the DS era (and probably still today too). Secondly, all of that doesn't matter anyway, since it's all done digitally nowadays. Nobody's going to bother with a disc or cartridge when your system connects to an online network. It doesn't matter whether Nintendo uses discs or cartridges, there are easier ways to get illegally obtained software running on a gaming device.
The only reason why Nintendo should be using cartridges over discs, is if the NX is indeed a handheld console. The last thing you want it walking around with a disc drive in your system. Cartridges are much more durable in portable systems.

Yes, same thing happened with the Wii U. In fact, we can confirm this is not about their Christmas line-up because European retailers are informed about minor things like that at separate events held in each country. If they're flying to Germany, it has to be about the NX, or it wouldn't be worth the cost.
Showcasing the console to more people increases the chances of a leak, so this points to a reveal happening sooner than later. Nothing we didn't already know, but still.
How far in advance are these events planned? I assume Nintendo can't expect everyone to just jump when they ask for them to. If they've organised a meeting and sent out invites to retailers then two questions: 1) do we know when this invite was sent out? today/yesterday? or some point last week?; 2) what would be the amount of time between the invite and the event? a week? two weeks?
Personally I'm thinking if Nintendo are ready to showcase this to retailers (which primarily in the short-run will mean they can advertise accurate info on their websites so pre-orders are available immediately after the full announcement), then they'll probably want to announce the thing very shortly after this retailer event. Maybe even a week after.
I think at this point, whilst we have no definitive confirmation that the NX is a hybrid, that I think we can all agree that to a fairly strong degree of certainty that the NX is a hybrid.
Of course, whether it's the hybrid in the way that the eurogamer rumour outlined it is another question.
