Bethesda Will Consider Developing For The Nintendo NX If It’s As Powerful As The Xbox One Or More
A few weeks back, we have reported that Bethesda may consider supporting the upcoming Nintendo NX if it makes sense to the publisher. In a recent interview, Pete Hines has elaborated more on the matter, also noting that some of the publisher’s titles might appeal to the Nintendo audience in some way.
Speaking with Metro UK, Pete Hines talked about how Bethesda hasn’t supported Nintendo hardware for a long time mostly due to hardware related issues, with the games in development not fitting without some major cuts.
No, no. it’s usually been one of a technical… hardware issue. It’s just, what it is that the devs are making and what are the hardware requirements that they’re looking at, to support what they’re making? And what fits? And anything that is below the line is, ‘Well, we can make it work, but we’d have to cut this or that or do it like…’ But no, that’s not the point. The point is to take the game, as you designed it, and to get it working on those platforms. Not make a bunch of cuts and a bunch of changes and bring out some other version of it.
Interestingly enough, Pete Hines revealed that Bethesda will consider supporting the NX if the console is powerful enough. Games far into development, such as Dishonored 2, wouldn’t be coming, but anything that’s still in development could be considered.
So if NX is announced in the next few weeks and is as powerful as an Xbox One or higher, then…
Then it will absolutely be something that we consider. Okay… let’s say they come out and say tomorrow it does X, Y, and Z. Well, Dishonored 2 is way down the road, it’s not in the conversation. But anything that is in development, I think we’d take a look at and see if technically does it line up with what they’re doing?
Even if things do line up, there’s still the Nintendo audience to consider, but this doesn’t seem to be a major concern, with Pete Hines stating that they do have any number of things that might appeal to it, albeit in a different way than Nintendo franchises.
“And then to your point, of course we always want to look at what we’re doing from an audience standpoint. But I think that we have any number of things that might appeal to the Nintendo audience. Maybe it’s not as appealing as Super Smash Bros., or it doesn’t appeal to that exact same audience, but that doesn’t mean that there’s not still an audience there.”
The Nintendo NX launches during March 2017 in all regions.
Surely Bethesda would know by now whether it's more or less powerful than an xbox one?
Unless of course the dev kits don't include final chip sets and they've just been told "that the final version will be more powerful" but even then surely developers would need to know this sort of thing already?
@dtjive Or if Nintendo has only given dev kits to Japanese 3rd parties (e.g. SEGA, Square, Koei Tecmo, Bandai Namco) and a very select few western 3rd parties (e.g. Ubisoft).
Unless these Western developers are being sneaky it sounds like Nintendo still haven't reached out fully to them. There's no point giving them dev kits months after launch.
@G0dlike To answer what you said on your now locked thread, I did wonder if they both were here not just for Apple's conference but also to reveal the NX next week perhaps. I mean the Mario runner game for iOS is kinda a good teaser and marketing PR for Nintendo before a big NX reveal.
So, I really enjoyed Shigero Miyamoto and Bill Trinen dropping by the Apple event today to show off Super Mario Run but it made me think, are they here just for this or is a big NX reveal coming! The timing fits and they've put Nintendo in the spotlight with the Run announcement...
I honestly think of a quite different scenario, Nintendo announced Super Mario Run which will definitely do extremely well so investors won't care when the NX reveal and release date are delayed. Behold NX reveal in early 2017 and release in November.2017
@Grumblevolcano Investors will certainly care because 2 other mobile games were delayed until next year, so unfortunately for Nintendo if the NX is delayed then that would be 3 strikes. Also aren't they giving away NX as prizes for Splatoon tournament in Europe to the winners in 6 months time? Unless they get an empty box with a piece of paper saying "IOU 1x NX"

There's an investor's meeting in the Fall right? I think that's coming relatively soon, like a month or two, and we should know what the situation with NX is during that briefing at the latest. I'll really only consider a delay as a possibility if we don't hear anything before then.

To be fair Mario is Mario. In terms of valuable IP associated with Nintendo Mario is up there with Pokemon. Nothing else they have is as big as those two IP. Even Zelda is huge but compared to those two it's a distant third. Animal Crossing being delayed? Well sure, that'll sting a bit. But Fire Emblem?..... Who cares, they have Mario!

So Sony anounces 2 consoles, one coming out this month and one in three months. Tell me why it's going to hurt Nintendo to wait a bit.
I must've missed the bit where Sony's new consoles seem like game changers. One is the same thing again but smaller. Basically nothing new at all there. And the other one is a performance boost targeted at "4K" despite lacking entirely the ability to play the one media where you can actually get proper 4K ATM. I don't think it changes anything at all.
Now the Apple stuff announced is interesting for Nintendo. I think them wanting to announce Mario Run at the Apple event probably did have an impact on when they talk about the NX. Because right now Nintendo has the world's attention. They're the biggest positive story out of Apple's event. News will cover it, it will get eyes looking at Nintendo. So why wouldn't they delay the NX reveal until after that?
