I forgot the direct was today! Wow, it's amazing they managed to make Smash look fun and interesting here....unlike at E3. I'm with you...give me single player, real single player and this starts looking good. Though honestly, is it me, or did the graphics get more WiiU-like since E3? It looks almost exactly like the WiiU one to me now. Maybe it's the display of older stages. Still, this presentation shows just how awful the E3 presentation was. I swear the didn't even prepare for it, they just slapped it together in a week.
Maybe the presence of bosses hints at something single player.
@NEStalgia Gamestop and Amazon are both making it look like there's an across the board pre-order discount for the game, as they both list the "regular price" as $59.99. Very weird.
@NEStalgia
"but isn't your favorite series in your signature a series only on Sony systems?"
Yes, but only on PS1 & PS2.
I don't care with other Sony machines, even my PS4 is Fail to impress me as Nintendo machines done. I still rarely touch my PS4 despite i have a few favorite games. Looked like PS4 reputation Turned OFF my hype / desire to play. Even after i bought PS4, i still thinking to myself "Why the heck i must buy this DAMN machine ?!"
Got my copy of Go Vacation! in the mail yesterday. It's a bit hit and miss, but decent overall. I do wish it had online though (even if it were limited to a certain set of activities), as really no one I know IRL is that interested in games, and this probably shines multiplayer.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
I guess I'm the only person here who wasn't terribly impressed with the new Direct? The single-player portion of the game seems pretty phoned in.
Dracula's Castle is definitely spiffy, though.
@Spoony_Tech It's too bad all of the big preorder discount programs are going away now.
Digital will soon be the best option for savings at launch, between sites that sell eshop cards at a discount and the 5% back you get from digital purchases atm.
@Ralizah A fake pre-order discount. That's new. I don't understand how they can list a fake full price and pretend it's on sale. Amazon I get, they keep manipulating prices as much as they manipulate their earnings statements to get out of the promotion while still claiming to offer it. GameStop? What possible benefit is it to them?
@Anti-Matter Still, it has games that you like, so it doesn't make sense to write off the platform, even if you don't like a lot of games made for it. You do like some of them!
@Ralizah The game presented better than the E3 show. Though the graphics still look like Smash 4 to me, and less enhanced than at E3. I'm hoping that's not the entire single player though. Tekken really should not have a better single player than Smash. That's just lame. Even KI ended up having to add a single player metagame after "story mode" was nothing of the sort, just an arcade mode with an ending.....like SFII had 30 years ago. But the metagame they added is actually really good....roguelike fighting. Shame KI fighting doesn't appeal to me.
Yeah, I'm still hoping that NO announces that like PS/XB they will allow "game sharing" between your Primary and logged in Switch (right now it's obscene that purchases are hardware-locked and I can't even log in and play a game I bought.) If they allow game sharing, like every other console does, I might as well go 100% digital at this point. I'll miss the cartridges, I love them, but with the price differences it's making less sense.
@Tsurii I think we both have the same thoughts on Smash 4, Smash 4.5, and the two presentations
@Ralizah Smash Run wasn't bad, I'd accept it. I'd accept anything more than that *$#@$ board game. But I'm really looking for a meaty story mode. It doesn't need to be loaded with cutscenes. Something with a metagame like the KI roguelike or the DB:FZ map battles/RPG elements. Something to add a metagame or story beyond just an arcade ladder of battles that feel like they have no purpose than training for competitive battles.
I'm a bit worried for Single Player, but as a game, I can't help but be impressed.
I've noticed for a whole now that a lot of Nintendo series will sometimes refuse to bring back things everyone liked from past games and replace them with something else that will also likely not be back (Pokemon being the most obvious example), as if they're trying to avoid making the best example of the game possible so that you'll keep buying them (I doubt that's why it happens though). This game is the complete opposite. Smash Bros not now, maybe never, needs to have as many stages as this. And the music. Like, seriously, look at the price of actually buying music, the soundtrack of this game alone is worth the price.
I will say, it seems like Classic Mode isn't Smash 4's which is already an improvement. People didn't care too much for it in Wii U, and that's still way underselling how bad Classic mode was in that game. It suuuuuuuucked. I don't know why Smash Tour got hate compared to that disaster. Smash Tour was at least interesting. Wii U Classic was so bad it made appreciate it more in previous games.
Notice how they also mentioned that classic mode would have unique challenges for each character.
While I like the random battle format, having a set series of battles for each character kinda makes me want to play as each character just to see the references.
@Tsurii Hyped? No. But I enjoy Smash. I play Smash with friends. So the likelihood that I won't get the new Smash is very small.
@NEStalgia That board game mode was the worst thing ever. Couldn't sell my copy of Smash on the Wii U fast enough.
Smash Run isn't ideal, I agree, but it's better than just a classic mode with specific battles.
Also hoping that the interesting difficulty slider from Smash 4 returns. The harder it gets, the more you bet, but also the more you're rewarded if you win. It was a cool system.
@Ralizah I personally wasn't exactly wowed. I wanted single player stuff and the closest thing I got was an admittedly much better Classic mode than the Wii U game. K.Rool is whatever for me, so I didn't get the same shock that many others did.
That said, even as a fan that is clearly not the main target for this game (More competitive multiplayer focused types of gamers), I can still see why this direct was pretty well-done. It just sucks that it didn't have much for me. I'm only really getting it since it's just necessary to have each consoles' smash game
