Masahiro Sakurai: Well then, I would like to ask about each of your new games. First, Dragon Quest XI. The 11th installment in the series will be released simultaneously on Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4, and including NX it’s coming out on three platforms, right?
Yuji Horii: That’s right. The use of hardware is different for each system, so it’s quite a challenge.
Also this bit I found interesting - that the hardware of all three consoles is different which is why it's a challenge to produce. That certainly bolds well for Eurogamer's leaked rumours in my eyes though I still don't like them.

@FragRed The 3DS version and PS4 version of XI are completely different; one is a top-down 2D-style game, while the PS4 version is a big 3D game with free camera control and the likes. I would guess that the NX version will a port of the PS4 version, that would explain the porting difficulties. If NX is ARM based, it should be able to run the 3DS version; or maybe he means that the NX has a different control scheme (lack of second screen etc.); that could also explain his comment.
@christo71186, that is some list of ideas. If the NX is hybrid console I hope they use a 3D screen again. I would also like to see a new Ice Climbers and F Zero games
I'm hoping for a 3d screen as well. That is such an upgrade, it would be a dream come true to be able to have one at proper resolutions.

I don't see that happening unfortunately. The days of 3D games is behind us plus it's another feature that would drain battery life which I think is going to be short as it is.

@Octane I read all three are unique, but tell the same story. I cannot begin to guess how much work that is, but Sakuri offers it is a lot more than developing Smash for 3DS and Wii U! Now, isn't that what we want from third parties? Not simply cash grab ports, but games that are developed with the system in mind. I won't be angry, but I would be disappointed if the NX is a port of either version now.
I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
@GrailUK I don't think that they mentioned that all three versions will be different, he was talking about the hardware being different. We don't know anything about the NX version, so it could go either way. However, seeing how the 3DS game is essentially two games in one and how the PS4 version is another game essentially, that means they are already developing three games for two systems, I don't think the NX version will be another different version; that's too much work for a franchise that isn't the most popular anymore. I expect the NX version to be a port, probably of the PS4 version, but since I imagine that porting from the 3DS version is easier, they might go that route as well. We don't know until we see actual NX footage.
I can’t talk about this in detail yet, but we are aiming so that neither people who like games nor moms dislike it.
Yes, he actually said the word ''moms''. That must be the most awkward quote in regards to the NX I've seen in a good while.. It seems like it's going to be another Wii / Wii U type of deal in terms of marketing; ''It's a device for hardcore gaming! but also for casuals! we actually don't know what it is!''
Yeah, I remember them saying the same thing for the Wii U. You can't appeal to everyone. At the very least, they're going to have to make the message clear. But as it is now, the Wii U took the same approach, to which everyone replied "Wait, WHO is it for?" and then proceeded to be the lowest selling Nintendo console in history, because even Nintendo didn't know exactly who they wanted it to be for.
@Octane
Lol oh boy. And anybody else cringe at his choice of words at the end? Basically summing up to, "We don't want too many people to hate it" lol (I'm being silly, I know)
I'm no marketing genius, but I doubt most companies would want the word "dislike" anywhere near their product, no matter the context. Could've been more positive in the way he phrased it, is all.
How are they going to appeal to two very different audiences? And I'm intrigued as to how they market this thing because right now TV adverts seem almost entirely focused on young children which really doesn't set a good image if you want to attract the "gamers".

Perhaps it appeals to moms because it's part handheld (in fact, it's primarily a handheld), and therefore doesn't have to take up the TV and uses less space on the entertainment center?
Or perhaps the entire launch lineup is Zelda BotW, and five different new Animal Crossing games, with Isabelle/Villager/Tom Nook becoming the new mascot of Nintendo. Therefore, they'd like to introduce Animal Crossing Kart, Animal Crossing Golf, Animal Crossing New Leaf 2, and Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer 2.
@rallydefault He didn't instil much confidence, that's for sure. Communication isn't Nintendo's strong suit.
Anyway, as Operative said, this is the same messaging they had going with the Wii U, nobody really knew who it was supposed to appeal to and I don't think even Nintendo knew. I really hope their messaging will be stronger with the NX; cause it often feels as if they live in their own little bubble with little knowledge of the outside world.
"I think that I want to release a game device that both customers who have much experience in gaming and customers who haven’t played much can enjoy greatly.”
That's the exact same audience that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEIR CONSOLES have targeted. Nothing's changed.
The Wii U didn't have some "unique target audience" that no other Nintendo console had before - it was a just a console with the worst delivery and execution possible.
Anyways, glad to see Dragon Quest XI reconfirmed for NX with Dragon Quest Builders looking likely.
That's potentially 3 DQ games right away... in Japan. Not sure if we can expect a localized version right off the bat, and I'd wouldn't put much faith in the 3DS version of XI being localized at all.
@IceClimbers I think Square will probably wait to see how well the DQVII and DQVIII remakes sell before deciding whether to localize NX versions of DQX and DQXI.
@Grumblevolcano I'd be quite shocked if DQX came over. I think the PS4/NX versions of DQXI will be localized around a year after the original release. As for the 3DS version, I don't think it will be localized at all.
