One of the conventions they spoke about with Zelda is playing on your own. I fully expect the added feature of inviting a friend to your Hyrule once Online is released. Maybe sell a few more copies of Breath of the Wild off it's back.

@Dogorilla I think the question is a broader one. That is ‘what genres work well as online games and what franchises does Nintendo have in those genres or in adjacent genres that could be repurposed?’.
So for instance the hot online genre now is the PUBG Battle Royale genre. Scavenge weapons and armour and fight to the death. The BoTW engine and mechanics could work in that genre if properly applied. I’d give Nintendo bonus points if it were given a Muramasa skin.
Another genre that works well is real time strategy. Nintendo has an RTS franchise (Pikmin) but it’s not suited for the type of ‘pit your army against another’. Maybe it could be done though or maybe a Pikmin MOBA where you race to control/overthrow nodes might work? Or maybe a more traditional competitive RTS in the Star Fox universe would be a better choice?
Nintendo has never shown any interest in a MMO. It’s one of the big online genres.
A Destiny clone or at least an online team based shooter would also be a big box to tick. Federation Force was one I suppose but badly received. On a more powerful console, with a lot more polishing and not launching under a cloud a similar game from Nintendo in the Metroid universe would have a chance. It would require a huge investment though to take seriously and I’m not sure the Metroid universe is compelling enough.
Honestly though when it comes to Nintendo and online I’d rather see them break the mould. There are a lot of things that could work but every major developer has congealed around a handful of successful genres.
I’d rather see Nintendo look at the objectives but disregard the stale rituals in order to create completely unexpected new genres in the online space - like Tomodatchi Life or the Streetpass Plaza games or the asynchronous multiplayer of Mario Run - but that’s not something that will necessarily go down well with the ‘core’. Especially since they are the ones who will actually pay for the online service.
@StuTwo Pikmin 2 (and 3, I believe) have pretty fleshed out multiplayer battle modes, so adding an online component to that could work. Mario + Rabbids also got a Versus mode recently that I think is local-only at the moment, but if they could add an online mode to that I could see it being a reasonably popular online strategy game (albeit turn based rather than real time).
I agree that Nintendo's best bet would probably be to come up with some crazy new idea for a competitive online game - maybe a unique take on the battle royale genre, like what Splatoon did to shooters. It would be a gamble but they would always have their existing online games (Splatoon, Arms, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Pokken etc) to fall back on if it didn't pay off, so I'm sure plenty of people would still be willing to pay for the online service.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music

@Dogorilla I’ve never played the multiplayer component of Pikmin 3. I understand it’s excellent but it’s probably not the direct competitive mode that RTS players are really looking for. Plus it’s a genre that can be intimidating to newcomers. Even as a single player game Pikmin is a game that demands a lot from the player.
Turn based strategy is fantastic but unfortunately it’s also a niche genre - especially for mutliplayer.
I’m sure Nintendo has some more exciting things lined up though. I just hope they’re not beholden to the models that work for other companies.
I liked Generation IV and hope to see remakes someday. However, all I ever see from Pokemon nowadays is Generation I pandering. I also don't think that Game Freak will seriously start off their big console debut with a remake.
I really wish they had done D/P remakes instead of US/UM.
As I have said prior, if GameFreak wants to adjust to HD development, remaking a game, simply remaking assets, rebalancing/expanding an existing game, is far easier than making a whole new world, Pokemon, characters, stories etc. in addition to a new hurdle in development.
In fact that would have benefitted XY, if it came AFTER a remake, so more of that development time could be spent on adjusting to new developments, instead of a new world.
@Harmonie I can see the idea stemming from Gen 7 leaning on Gen 4 a little, for instance the Pokemon Centre music, and of course the recent movie prominently featuring Lucario and Piplup, the two most prominent and popular Gen 4 mons.
Oh and of course Dialga and Palkia are the first legends this year in events.
100% positive that Gen 8 will be the first entries on Switch. There's zero reason to expect otherwise.
This. Besides, how would they start a generation with a remake? A new generation introduces new abilities, new moves, new Pokemon. There won't be any new Pokemon in the remake, that's what the new region is for. And the same applies to most of the new moves and abilities. It would be weird.
Anyway, FRLG are older than DPP, what are the chances of another gen 1 remake?
But we already had a remake of Gen 1, where Team Rocket does stuff, legendaries don't matter or have story importance, and there are Gen 1 starters and loads of Gen 1 Pokemon for some reason.
Its called XY.
