@FragRed DLC making sense isn’t so much a matter of how old or new a game is - it has more to do with how large and active the user base continues to be, how likely they are to buy for DLC, how cost effective producing DLC is and (to a lesser extent) how effective adding DLC is likely to be in promoting the base game.

My guess is that - on all of those counts - MK8 DLC makes complete sense. Nintendo will know for sure though because they have the usage figures.

Personally if I were running Nintendo there’d be Mario Kart 8 DLC every 6 months throughout the lifespan of the Switch. It’s easy money but it also elevates a mechanically perfect game into a package that’s basically impossible for the competition to ever match head on. Blizzard has never made a World of Warcraft 2...

I think it’s also worth bearing in mind that he original DLC wasn’t announced until nearly 6 months after launch so the idea it needs to be announced at or near launch is nonsense. Or at least that MK is so big and evergreen that the usual ‘rules’ don’t apply to the franchise.

Just a little warning to anyone considering buying The Escapists 2. The game has major issues. I tried to load up my save file and was met with a message saying there was an error and the software will now close. Tried several times, same. Made new file, saved it then quit and tried to load it up, same again. Deleted it from system and downloaded again, same problem. Rebooted Switch, yep same again. I've had a look online and others are having the same issue. Some are having the game crash when playing it and are then unable to load the file again. The game is basically broken as it is just now. At 20 quid it's not exactly a cheap game so I'm rather annoyed. I've tweeted the developer so hopefully I'll hear back later. If not I'll be emailing Nintendolife to see if they'll report it. Doubt they will but they should.

@darkfenrir
Capcom has their own site where they show all their games that sold over one million units, which also includes the unit numbers.
http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/finance/million.html
I assume that these numbers are more trustworthy than vgchartz.
Edit:
No problem.

@MajorTom Ooooh, thank you for the link! Let me revise the sales number then

1. MH Freedom 3 (PSP) - 4.9m
2. MH X (3DS) - 4.3m
3. MH4U (3DS) - 4.1m
4. MH4 (3DS) - 4.1m
5. MH Freedom Unite (PSP) - 3.8m
6. MH3G (3DS) - 2.6m
7. MH Freedom 2 (PSP) - 2.4m
8. MH Tri (Wii) - 1.9m
9. MH XX (3DS) - 1.8m
10. MH Freedom (PSP) - 1.3m

So, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 tends to have some serious frame-drops, specifically during a situation like this: https://images-ext-2.discordapp.net/external/mhtCqzjSrD06hfzz...

Nintendo's reaction "In regards to the frame rate drop, considering the game is a Nintendo Switch exclusive, the publisher certainly took the device's specifications into account when developing the game, and are aware of the frame drop, which is considered normal in certain situations during the game play, but abnormal, should this happen constantly. In which case we would suspect there may be something wrong with the game card itself."

Not sure what to think of that.....

@SLIGEACH_EIRE This is a discussion thread. Several of your contributions are limited to dropping hyperlinks or videos.

I don't know what you think listing all those sites who have published this story achieves, all it does is show that you're regurgitating something that's well publicised already.

If you continue to just drop any news story relating to a thread don't be surprised if we start treating it like spam and deleting it.

This is a discussion forum, not a tumblr blog for hyperlinks to someone else's content.

@gcunit This thread is called "The Nintendo Switch Thread". It doesn't say that it's exclusively for discussion. There is no "Nintendo Switch News" thread and so I use this as the most relevant place to put news. This site publishes stories all the time that uses "someone else's content" as you put it. Now I could create a "Nintendo Switch News" thread but I see threads created and constantly deleted here. Would it be alright to create such a thread? But then I post on other forums and what sometimes ends up happening is discussion gets divided between threads as people discuss the news in news and general discussion threads.

Edit: The point to all those links is that those sites all published that story in the last 24 hours or so, that you deem isn't newsworthy. It's not spam, it's news even if Kimishima was just reiterating a hope he has that he previously made. I don't think that's really possible at the moment anyway as the Switch is very expensive. Maybe when it gets down around the €200 mark.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE This thread is mainly for Nintendo Switch discussion. You can post something that can be discussed with relating the Switch, but don't go far and making it your thread to do what please you. Just follow the rules, and you'll be fine.

Making promise is easy. The hard part is keeping it.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Kimishima can keep hoping. Either he brings a proper home-console, or upgrades the Switch to have some real power so they can stop excusing themselves by saying frame-drops are normal. Without those adjustments, I won't be buying a 2nd Switch, only the upgrade/next iteration that is the prison which holds Nintendo's IP.

Grumblevolcano

@MFD That sounds like throwing 3rd parties under a bus type talk. The concept that if a certain game is on XB1/PS4/PC then it won't be well optimized for Switch.

Grumblevolcano

MFD

@Grumblevolcano Hah, that's already the case. People excuse every Switch game on account of portability, we've already entered that spiral. It's a matter of time before developers figure that, portability, is all that's required for their game to sell, all that truly matters.

Even XC2 doesn't run too well in handheld, but that's excused without any remorse: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-does-xe...

Since people want portability in everything, we may as well be well on our way to that gaming crash at this rate, when games start to suffer because people don't value anything besides portability anymore.

The only times I've noticed frame drops in docked mode is in Torigoth to be honest and I've played XC2 for over 200 hours. I've only played portable mode once and it was fine but I wasn't doing enough to properly come to a conclusion (e.g. I've done no battles in portable mode).

Grumblevolcano

TimelessJubilee

@MFD Oh man XC2 runs like hot garbage in portable mode especially when you're in a fight.Don't know why Nintendo let this game release like this,or better yet haven't made the dev team patch it up.

@MsJubilee Well, if you look at my post that refers to that frame-drop in docked mode, they consider it normal. I can only guess that the way handheld runs is also considered "normal" and since enough people don't complain about portable and are content with it, nothing will change.

In fact, look at the comments in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9no_CvzuUS4 particularly this one "Totally a Tomato: Há 2 meses Portability >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Graphics & 60 fps"

That just scares me.

Tfw I played 160+ hours in portable mode and barely noticed any framerate drops. If there is, it must be not so bad since I didn't even remember

Framerate should never be a part of the "Who needs graphics when the gameplay is fun!" argument.

@GrailUK Sure they wanted to pick up that new audience. Capcom has a well documented infatuation with the big Western "COD" audience that almost killed them once before. I don't think anyone doubts that putting the game on PS4 along with its open world structure and de-Japanifying it was intended to reach the Western audience (whether that's a wise move given the still complicated game, and difference in audience playstyles is another issue, even regarding that the Western base for the game actually grew substantially on Nintendo where it previously failed miserably on Sony hardware....)

But the distinct absence of the game on Nintendo hardware for a series that has it's largest audience and most success on Nintendo hardware is what's striking. "All hardware except Nintendo" because hardware differences isn't a new running policy for may publishers. But MH in particular was a series that saw it's greatest retention and growth on that hardware. Companies walk away from what doesn't work, but rarely do they walk away from what DOES work unless there's incentive to do so. There's a severe lack of business sense in that. And though you may suggest that they took a gamble in hopes of a big payoff, their own sales estimates on World show they were not expecting a big payoff. So why would a business abandon a stable, growing market that has shown long term loyalty to chase a new audience with a more expensive product that isn't actually expected to return higher numbers while leaving a large market that has been repeat customers? They woudln't. Not unless there was some bankrolling for it. Unless you think the intense lure of being on XBox for a primarily Japanese series was just too much to ignore in favor of Nintendo's unknown next platform succeeding the one that just sold you upward of 10M unit sales?

Clearly they were roped by the promises of the incoming hardware from Sony/MS....but those platforms were ALSO unknowns back when they allegedly made these decisions.... Maybe Sony sweet talked them into believing the PS4 would take Japan by storm........but considering even Sony decided to delay the launch of PS4 in Japan....that's like an argument for buying salt water on an desert island.

@darkfenrir Even that list makes things look stranger than reality. Many of those games are the same game in different release/regional packages. 4, 4U are actually all the same game - U was an expansion pack in Japan, but the only version of 4 elsewhere. Same with Tri & 3G, X & XX, F2 &F2U,. So the real list looks more like:

1. MH4 & 4U (3DS) - 8.2m
2. MH Freedom 2 & Freedom Unite (PSP) - 6.2m
3. MH X & XX (3DS & NSW) - 6.1m (NSW numbers not included, may change position.)
4. MH Freedom 3 [Portable 3rd] (PSP) - 4.9m
5. MH Tri / 3G / 3GU (Wii & 3DS & WiiU) - 4.5m (WiiU numbers not included, may change position.)
6. MH Freedom (PSP) - 1.3m

Of note is the fact that the numbers haven't actually dropped, and not seen in the chart is a franchise growth in the West on Nintendo, and a relative stasis in Japan (itself a feat with the Japanese shift away from consoles.) Also note that X & XX were a somewhat unwanted rehash to milk 4/4U for all its worth. They sold quite well for a game that was almost an expansion to 4U in its own right.

Also of note is that when they supposedly started in on MHW, they had only the success of 4 and the growth over the 3 they considered a smash success to go by without knowing the sales of X. (It also indicates that X was truly a cash grab, being churned out of recycled assets from 4 while they were half-way done World....)

@darkfenrir Or maybe you're not one to pay as much attention to it. As an MMO and RTS player, I notice when frames are dropping, and that certainly extends to other games. The thing that really gets me, is how Nintendo notes it as "normal" that frames can drop quite serious at certain points. That means they'll excuse anything of the sort on future games.
