My thought is that they NEED one flagship title for 2018. Kirby, Yoshi, Fire Emblem are all great, but 2018 needs to be almost, or as good as 2017 to show that the Nintendo Switch is here to stay. 2017 was a near perfect launch year, one of the best launch years of any consoles I’ve ever witnessed. Nintendo needs to follow it up with a strong 2018. One of the following games needs to come out:

  • Smash (likely)
  • Pokemon (Possible, I’d say 50/50)
  • Animal Crossing (PLEASE)
  • Metroid (unlikely)

I think we will get smash and Pokémon. I really do believe Pokemon is coming in 2018. We need one big holiday title and Pokémon would be just that.

I feel like Animal Crossing should come out in 2018. It's the type of game that relies on the passage of time in real life to really work well, and so I think it should come early in the life cycle. Whether it will or not is 50/50, but I think it would be a good move on Nintendo's part.

I do think we'll see one more Wii U port next year, something big. Smash is obviously the number one contender, but an expanded Mario Maker port is a close second. The other major titles I'd like to see (Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 1+2, Super Mario 3D World, Tokyo Mirage Session and Yoshi's Wooly World) don't have the mass appeal to sell systems they need, or are too close to another flagship release in the same series (Though a holiday release for 3D World isn't off the cards).

As for a major title? There's going to be a big one next year, almost certainly. I'm mostly curious to see what it is, because it'll clearly be an end of year release whatever it is.

They said 2018 would focus on other demographics. I expect another game like 1-2 Switch. And I expect Animal Crossing. That, coupled with Yoshi and Kirby (all games that will target more casual gamers, women and children) should cover it. And the rest should be more core titles. Smash is a sure bet.

@link3710 The thing that makes me think "not Mario Maker" is simply that they already have 2 big first party 2d platformers lined up for 2018.

I think we'll definitely see Pikmin in 2018. If it's not Pikmin 4 then we'll get Pikmin 3.

I think we’re forgetting about pikmin 4. Wasn’t that game rumored to be completed for Wii U? I could totally see it coming in 2018 (oops just saw the poster above me just mentioned it, Nintendo gamers think alike ahah)

@StuTwo totally agree. Mario Maker was one of, if not my absolute favorite game on Wii U and I’d love a port, but I think with Kirby, Yoshi, Megaman and maybe a donkey Kong on top of it, there are too many 2d side scrollers to add Mario to the mix. Even though Mario maker feels more than the typical side scroller. Plus I don’t know if I’d even call it a port, just call it “Mario Maker for Nintendo Switch” and add a bunch of features, it’s not the type of game that need a “Mario Maker 2” type of sequel. But I’d still love it for 2018/2019

nikoamii

link3710

Yeah, I definitely agree that Mario Maker port/sequel (cause why not port the existing game and build off of it, no use reinventing the wheel) makes more sense for 2019. Slopes seem the most likely addition, along with maybe a Mario Land 2 palette, and maybe some original ones? Or just a boat load of more pieces, that'd work for me.

If Nintendo seriously expects to sell 30 million Switch units next year, they are going to need some seriously big exclusives. That would be half the number of PS4 units in a single year. And other than Animal Crossing and Pokemon, what do they have that could possibly come close to selling those kinds of units?

@Dev Additional bosses would definitely be nice, though I think they'd have to be usable anywhere like Bowser Jr. and Bowser, but who... Birdo, Wart and Mouser come to mind of course, and maybe Petey Piranha from NSMB? Or adaptations of bosses who appeared in non 2D platformer Marios. Cause... there really aren't any others besides the koopalings, who don't play that uniquely. The other bosses from NSMB are all... questionable on being implemented at best.

On the other hand, Birdo makes me wonder if they could implement a SMB2(USA) pallette where you can't stomp on enemies but grab them...?

^ This. Any improvements are always welcome, but the drifting motion control(bow) in Skyrim were getting annoying. Let’s indeed hope this gets fixed by the latest update.

Yeah, definitely! I've been having 'gyro drift' issues in Splatoon 2 ever since the previous update dropped - it can be temporarily 'fixed' by putting the controller down for a few seconds to reset it, but that's not always feasable - especially when you're in the heat of battle! (..and trying to counter-act it has just been plain annoying!)

Hopefully that's all fixed now! I'll have to drop back in to S2 and check it out

Yeah, I'd go along with @StuTwo's point about Nintendo perhaps considering that Yoshi and Kirby will have their '2D' base well covered in 2018 - I do think that we'll see a 'Mario Maker Switch' at some point given the (relative) success it had on WiiU, but I'm leaning towards a 2019 release at the earliest...

...I'm also hopeful, like @nikoamii, that we could perhaps see 'Pokémon Switch' next year - but looking at the history of the 'core' series of games, I have the chances rather lower than 50/50 (unfortunately):

Pokémon Gen I - 1996 (JP) / 1998 (WW)
Pokémon Gen I+ (Yellow) - 1998 (JP) / 1999/2000 (WW)
Pokémon Gen II - 1999 (JP) / 2000/2001 (WW)
Pokémon Gen II+ (Crystal) - 2000 (JP) / 2001 (WW)
Pokémon Gen III - 2002 (JP) / 2003 (WW)
Pokémon FR/LG - 2004
Pokémon Gen III+ (Emerald) - 2004 (JP) / 2005 (WW)
Pokémon Gen IV - 2006 (JP) / 2007 (WW)
Pokémon Gen IV+ (Platinum) - 2008 (JP) / 2009 (WW)
Pokémon HG/SS - 2009 (JP) / 2010 (WW)
Pokémon Gen V - 2010 (JP) / 2011 (WW)
Pokémon Gen V+ - 2012
Pokémon Gen VI - 2013
Pokémon OR/AS - 2014
Pokémon Gen VII - 2016
Pokémon Gen VII+ - 2017

..the usual trend would indicate that a new Pokémon generation comes along once every 3 years (sometimes even 4) - which would mean that (assuming it'll be 'Gen VIII') we won't see it until 2019 at the earliest - but I'm still hopeful nonetheless!

Third-parties might be where I pin most of my hopes for 2018 - if @JaxonH's rumour regarding Dark Souls is to be believed, that's yet another big name third-party title coming to the party which would be (yet more) welcome news! Not necessarily my kind of game, but another 'big name' nonetheless - the more the merrier I say! There isn't much in the currently confirmed first-party 2018 line-up that really grabs me if I'm honest but, if the reason is that they're looking to cater for other demographics, then I fully support the move - and the wave of third-parties (and indies) coming to the Switch is steadily tuning in to a tsunami, so there's a good chance that there'll be plenty of variety even if the first-party line-up isn't tickling your fancy!

You should add Paper Mario Color Splash and Xenoblade Chronicles X to the Wii U remake list. Those are not less worthy.

I have a question aboit the Switch game cartridges. Right now the biggest cartridgea are 16GB. Are bigger ones available or will be available in the future.

I am asking out of curiosity but if bigger are available more games could see full releases on the cartridge.

StuTwo

@Zuljaras yes, officially bigger carts are possible (potentially much bigger than blu ray capacity). Publishers are just shying away from them because of the cost.

Maybe Nintendo is adding a higher premium because they’re harder to manufacture or something?

According to reports there is also a 32gb cartridge but again reports or rumor are indicating that Nintendo are charging a lot of money for them. This has resulted in some third party developers using the smaller cartridges and the consumer having to download the rest of the game onto an sd card

Farmboy74

@link3710 Extra playable characters would seem to be a given. I’d love to see courses designed with Luigi or Peach in mind.

Extra power ups would also be great. They already experimented with anachronisms like the ghost houses in the original SMB graphics set so why not the ice flower or the super acorn suit in all versions? Why not even power ups that were never in a 2d game like cat Mario?

@SKTTR Even though Color Splash is a good game, I don't think it'll come to Switch.

These come to mind as most likely:

  • Smash
  • Super Mario Maker
  • XCX
  • Bayonetta 1+2
  • Wonderful 101

The first 3 are big games whose functionality have been reduced by the closure of Miiverse and the rest are up to Platinum to decide.
