@Paraka I feel like games like 3D world and 3D land could be great replacements for 2D mario. It was 3D, fun, and still kept that Mario-ish feel. Not to criticize 3D mario games, but they can sometimes feel a tad bit too realistic. Also, like you said, multiplayer 4 player Mario is rather crucial. I'm not going to be devastated if we never get a 4 player Mario, but it is always good to have the novelty of access to one on the Switch.

To be fair, 3D Land was also a generic Mario enemies game as far as I remember. Which ironically proves your point as it was STILL better than any of the NSMB games but was less interesting than the other 3D games.

@The64Master - I prefer 3D Mario games, namely cause the fake sense of freedom (which makes me excited for Odyssey), and control. Though I am personally not opposed to more 2D Mario games, I still think the way people are acting it like we just received NSMB2 and NSMBU ported to Switch last month.

Though they're likely to be existing as much as Mario Party 11 and Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics (calling it, next N-Direct will show it for February/March window). The discussion is when, not if. And if Mario Maker makes it out first I feel that we won't see a 2D Mario for a longer period of time.

I just liked the "3D" games because, unlike the 2D ones, they were still trying out new things. Keeping 2D mechanics while mixing in 3D gameplay, 3D World just expanded on it which was fine by me. (I mean, they did the same with Galaxy, so whatever)

I knew that Galaxy 3 wasn't happening, or another 3D World would happen...And I was right, once again they're doing new things with the enemy possession thing.

Then there's the 2D games...DS and Wii were fine, they brought back memories...But, after that, it was basically the same game over and over again...Same visuals/graphics, same bosses...SAME...FREAKING..."BAHS"!!! Even the giant Bowser final boss, that was epic seeing on Wii, is just...BORING! xD

@The64Master I suppose that's true if you count 3D World/Land as 3D Mario games, but to me they don't seem like true 3D Mario games, at least judging by what I've seen and heard. I haven't played them though, so I can't say for sure.

The main reason I think 2D Mario needs a break though, is because it's so hard to add new things to it. The series as a whole is starting to stagnate IMO, whereas 3D Mario has so much potential for new stuff.

I don't! It was still on rails similar to a 2d game. While I liked it more so then a straight up 2d game it still felt more 2d to me.

@KirbyTheVampire As I see it, the NSMB games only really had 1 purpose. To relive nostalgia. They delivered on it, yes, but NSMB should've been a 1 time thing. Also, I thought I'd mention that the latest classic-format Zelda games, such as Link between worlds, were great. Zelda is always expandable, regardless of the format.

I'd actually like a new 2D Mario soon. Something that blew me away like in 2009 when I first played NSMB. Or, at the very least... maybe a 3D World 2 or something akin to that.

@Vee_Flames I still feel that the past should be the past. Remastering games: great. Reimagining games: Great. Trying to simulate the original feel of an orignal game: meh. The NSMB games just didn't capture the charm and fun of the original 80's and 90's mario games.

@The64Master Eh... NSMB is easily my best DS game ever. Spent countless hours playing that game... figuring out every secret path, getting all the Star Coins, replaying each and every single level over and over and over again for no good reason, and refining my skills in the Mario vs Luigi mode. Oh, and those minigames! As a reimagination of the original games, I think it did a pretty good job. Like, seriously.
NSMBWii and NSMB2 took a tumble after NSMB (especially NSMB2. That game is just as shallow), but I felt NSMBU was NSMBWii, but much better to play. Now, if they could just introduce a new artstyle and some new fresh ideas for a new 2D Mario game, that would be awesome.

@The64Master - NSMB was pretty much the idea for reliving nostalgia. But honestly I cannot say the same for it's sequel. It attempted new things with the whole gold coin angle. Didn't work entirely too well, but it DID try something. Which is more than what I can say for NSMBU (excluding the Luigi addition, which I found was great).

The issue is attempting new things doesn't always mean it'll be good. Nintendo had their fare share of those the last couple years, so here to hoping if they'd make a new NSMB game for Switch, it'll do something entirely unexpected. Though I don't think it will.

Eh, at least they made Mario Maker, I say just continue with that...give us more features (freakin' SLOPES! Also water in non-underwater areas), more layouts, like Super Mario Land, maybe go further and give us Yoshi's island's style. owo (no idea how that would work with the others, but whatever, lol)

I mean, not counting Maker, it's been 5 years since the last 2D Mario.

I'd love to see a new 2D Mario, but ONLY if they ditch the whole "New Super Mario Bros" branding. They need a different art style, world design, and particularly sound design/direction (no more BAHs). It needs some fresh ideas. I actually wouldn't mind seeing more of the basic mechanics and different powerups from the 3D games get translated into 2D Mario. That's an easy way to spice it up honestly.

@Joeynator3000 - They're probably going to do both. Maker eventually mutates into Auto-Mario Simulator and pretty sure Nintendo has their own ideas to add to the 2D experiences, which as a company they'll just sell to us.

@IceClimbers - Idea pitch; What if they approached the next Mario in a more arcade fashion? Timed power-ups upon acquire, timed scenarios that actually matter, multiple goals to reach with each level.

Whatever, I enjoyed it...though of course my most popular levels were just remixes. (I think SMB 1-1 is the most popular) Wished one of my Advanced Remixes were played by some of the big youtubers though. TwT Ah well.

@Paraka Idk why, but I think Nintendo releasing official ROM hacks on the eShop would be awesome! It could be a cool substitute for NSMB. Original, new content, with the old great engine we all know and love with an arguably nostalgic soundtrack.

For an example, maybe nintendo could release - Super Mario Bros 3: Bowser's Fleet Attacks! It could be a 4-5 dollar level pack that uses the Mario 3 engine with brand new levels made by Nintendo staff. I know, it sounds a lot like Mario maker, but the devs could use every element and spare the community of boring "don't move" levels.

It did bug me that Maker always had that limitation one way or another, so I couldn't create exactly what I was imagining there.
