@StuTwo Is Metroid really a system seller? I don't deny that the franchise is important to a lot of people but I don't ever remember it pulling amazing numbers. I think it is a great enhancement to the library as its absence brings out vocal opposition but it is a part of the f-zero, star fox, metroid trifecta; all fantastic franchises...but they don't draw the masses out in droves.
I always feel bad when he has to reiterate that there are more announcements after E3. That is a given but the internet acts like if something didn't get an E3 trailer there will be no more games ever. Yet on the other hand the internet is obsessed with leaks...I'm just here to play games.

I'm not sure that comment was about it being a huge system seller. I think it was more about Nintendo needing to maintain momentum across demographics. If all they have for next year is Animal Crossing, Kirby, Yoshi and Pokemon? There's a huge gap there for people who got the Switch to play Zelda and Super Mario Odyssey. Metroid would fill that gap nicely.
@Grumblevolcano
I had just assumed that New SMB had no reason to exist once they released Super Mario Maker. I'd love to see an updated version of Mario Maker on Switch. If they do another New SMB I'll be pretty disappointed.

@skywake He put it in a list of games that "pull holiday Nintendo consoles through a holiday period". Which is one of the biggest console sales times. So I don't think I was reaching too much with my response. I wasn't knocking what he said, merely asking a question. I'm sure he will clarify his stance or refute what I said when he responds. I'll wait until then to go further.

"The response to what we’ve showcased, and it really is just a small tip for 2018, has been exceptionally positive. You’ve got fans seeing Metroid Prime 4, hearing that Mr. Tanabe, who’s been involved in all of the Metroid Prime games, is going to be at the helm of that, the fans are tremendously excited. To hear that there’s going to be a core Pokémon RPG experience on the Nintendo Switch, the fans are incredibly excited. To see a traditional Kirby experience, with him inhaling enemies and copying abilities, fans are excited about that. And then the Yoshi game that we showcased, with that unique, you know, motion to go “behind-the-scenes,” so to speak, has people really intrigued. So just by showcasing those four games, and giving a little bit of a taste, yeah there’s a lot of excitement to what 2018 can hold."
Sounds like MP4 is planned for next year according to Reggie.
I think the big holiday 2018 game will be 2D Mario. If you think about the past, 2014 is the only year in the past decade that didn't have a Mario platformer and given we already have 3D Mario coming to Switch in the form of Odyssey that leaves 2D for next year. Whether it takes the form of a Super Mario Maker port/sequel or a fully featured 2D Mario adventure, I'm not sure.
I can see Nintendo doing this without a doubt. 2d Mario's are cheap and quick and make money.
I still say Luigis Mansion and Pikmin 4 are on the cards for the next year and a half. Neither are system sellers or holiday games but both can fill huge needs.
Oh and can we please get a KI Uprising 2!!!

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
@Octane Neither do I but with things like this he's usually a lot more careful with what he says. He's just basically said there that it's coming next year.It might still end up falling into 2019 but I really doubt he would be talking like that about a game that had only just begun development.
@Spoony_Tech I agree about Pikmin 4 given it has been confirmed in the past that Pikmin 4 is not Hey! Pikmin, I think Pikmin 4 will be a summer game. Not sure about Luigi's Mansion but it would be cool to have especially if it was more like the GC game than 3DS.
Just thought I'd share a handy little thing I discovered for anyone who didn't already know...
I had an issue with my Switch yesterday (a black screen, only things I could access were a couple of partially responsive menus) - couldn't access the home screen, couldn't shut down via the Power menu...I checked Nintendo's online Troubleshooting page and discovered that you can force a power down by holding the on/off button down for 12 seconds...doing so allowed me to reboot the console and resolve the issue
I wasn't aware that you could hard reboot the console in this way - hopefully I won't have to use it too often, but it's useful to know nonetheless
@NaviAndMii i posted a thread the other day with a weird issue where that want working. It wouldn't wake from of sleep, and ditching restarts showed the nintendo logo and then back off it when. It didn't recognize the dock either.....i did tons of reboots that didn't work, unplugged the dock a bunch of times.... not sure what finally worked, i was all set to set up a repair thinking it was toast, and then one of the times it came up.... been fine all week after that. That was a weird lockup (pre-3.0 by a day so maybe that situation is already addressed. It was really weird. )
My second dock now is weird. Power went out yesterday. When it came back the switch was flashing the screen, draining battery a little, every few seconds. I unplugged the dock, but it still did it! And the dock light was flashing.
Long story short, after a lot of headache, i figured it out... the dock still had power even when unplugged! It somehow was pulling power from the hdmi and bypassing the ac adapter! But it wasn't enough power, so it just keept making it flicker! It doesn't do that in the other location, so it's not broken. I have a complicated hdmi signal chain with multiple repeaters and switches..... somehow one of the repeaters is sending enough power after an outage that the dock latches onto it as the power source. Unplugging the usb ethernet, hdmi and power fixes it. I can't duplicate it just unplugging the dock, so it's something that happens when the the hdmi repeaters are shut down and restarted forcibly i think.
I might need to buy an UPS so an outage doesn't destroy the switch by making it turn off thousands of times if I'm not home when it outages happen.
One way they could make a Super Mario Maker enhanced port or sequel better is by having a 2D Mario adventure included with it. Say for example something kind of like Sonic Generations. Bowser takes control of time and sends Mario back to the SMB era, every world or two focuses on a certain game and at the end of each world is a boss related to that game. World 8 ends up being some sort of twisted dimension where all the games are present and there being your typical final Bowser fight at the end. Each world has its own world map with some secret exits/levels and reaching certain points in the adventure unlocks extra stuff for the creator.
@NEStalgia Oh wow! The Switch seemingly needs a few more stability updates then - unstable little thing! ..my heart sank when I woke up to a 'black screen of death' - I was one of the unlucky few who had a left Joy-Con issue, the last thing I wanted was to have to book repair number 2, 3 months in! ..seems like the 'force power down' thing isn't a guaranteed cure then - nice to know that there's something else you can try at least The black screen issue I encountered would allow me to bring up the 'power' menu, but it wouldn't let me select any of the power options - luckily a hard reboot did the trick...this time!
@Niinbendo
Glad you like them! Ya, they're a tad small, but comfortable and the smaller profile allows them to be more portable and less clunky. More importantly though, the SL/SR buttons work amazing in the Surge Grip, whereas every other grip I've seen it's been difficult to press those buttons, even with the official slide on grips. And the tiny button to desync is on the Surge grip (super convenient, don't have to remove to turn off manually), and the L/ZL and R/ZR are still accessible if needed, without being in the way (like when holding a joycon sideways by itself).
I've given up on NBA Playgrounds. Would have bought it, but it's just taken too long now. No word on Pocket Rumble. I figure one of these days it'll just pop up in our weekly download list.

I wonder about the patch. I know it adds an entire mode, but I still think 15 GB for a patch is too excessive. Nintendo should really give some facilities or help to devs to do the compression.
Plus, from what I've read a good part of the patch is bloat ware - devs said they could bring the patch size to 7 GB.
@Ryu_Niiyama and @skywake (and anyone else who's interested in reading a long post).
I may not have made myself as clear as I could have. Which is always a difficulty when typing on a phone.
Skywake didn’t interpret my comments wrongly (he was right) but I think there’s a lot more to it.
A first party flagship game that anchors the year for a console has to wear a number of different hats. To take a deep breath:
It has to be a profit centre
Obviously. They want to make money out of their big holiday season game. The more the better!
It’s not as important to a first party like Nintendo as it is to a third party publisher though. Nintendo has other sources of income – particularly hardware sales and taking a platform fee from third party sales on their systems. They also have a diverse range of smaller games and a few truly evergreen titles already out there.
Nintendo will, for instance, sell more copies of Mario Kart 8 in 2018 than they will of Metroid Prime 4 across its lifetime. So Metroid Prime 4 won’t make or break the company.
Fulfilling the promises made to existing customers
The people who have bought a Switch so far are disproportionately important. As early adopters they are likely to buy far more games and accessories.
By launching with Zelda Breath of The Wild Nintendo has made an implicit promise to this group: “we will supply you with big ambitious titles on Switch that belong on the big screen. It’s a portable console but there will be no compromises”. I’m looking forwards to Yoshi and Kirby in 2018 – I love 2d platformers - but I didn’t buy a Switch just to play 2d platformers. If 2d platformers were all that was on the horizon for Switch then I’d feel let down however great they may be and however gorgeous they may look.
A flagship game has to offer some kind of delivery on that implicit promise.
Setting a promise to prospective new customers
Likewise you need a game that sets a lure for new customers. A promise that the best of the console isn’t behind you – that what is still to come is at least as ambitious as what’s already out there.
People will buy a console from the announcement until the launch of major flagship game justifying their purchase in part because that major flagship game is on the way. In the end they might not ever actually buy the game but the promise and excitement of what it could be will sell them the console.
Capturing media interest/excitement
This is a big one – especially for a company like Nintendo that has a tiny advertising spend relative to Sony and Microsoft. Every article and blog written about your big flagship game is a free advert for your console.
Metroid Prime 4 is an advert for the Switch – it will keep the console visible and talked about. A new IP could do that too (of course) but it’s much, much, harder and more expensive.
This is also why you need a big flagship anchor at Christmas – even when you don’t expect or need it to sell a lot of copies. You simply get a lot of media focus/buying guides at that time of year that you don’t get at any other time.
Building/satisfying the audience for particular genres and game styles
Again another big one that includes stretching demographics – and one that, as Skywake pointed out, I touched upon before but I’ll elaborate a little.
A person who plays Zelda Breath of the Wild for 200 hours is likely to be a person who will also play Skyrim for 200 hours. So selling 4 million Switch consoles on the back of Zelda means you have a big potential audience to whom you can sell Skyrim.
Conversely if you’d sold 4 million Switch consoles on the back of Just Dance the odds are that Skyrim would land with a thud.
Metroid Prime 4 is especially important because it’s one of the only (the only?) big name first party games that can be easily marketed to the 13-30 year old male demographic. Depressingly most AAA third party games target that demographic exclusively so a successful Metroid Prime 4 will hopefully lure enough people within that demographic to seed the ground for AAA games from third parties to be more successful on Switch.
You see it the opposite way around with Sony producing games that aspire to have a more “Nintendo-like appeal” such as Knack.
A glorified tech demo
It sounds vain and it might be but a first party always needs to have one or two games a year that really demonstrate what a console can do.
Let’s face it – everyone on this forum is already saying it: “if Switch can run Breath of The Wild then there’s no reason why it couldn’t run insert game here in some way”. That’s an important marker for the gaming public but it’s also important for developers who might be on the fence about whether they can actually get their games running on Switch.
It’s also important to head off the perception that “Switch is underpowered” and justify the premium that Nintendo wants to charge. They need to present flagship games that really couldn't be done on the 3DS.
…
Metroid Prime 4 will not be the biggest profit generator for Nintendo. Animal Crossing, Pokemon and a 2d Mario game will all make much more money and cost less to make but they can’t do the other things a flagship anchor game needs to do for the Switch.
