@BLP_Software You've mentioned that Star Fox review more than once, so I had a look. Turns out, I pretty much agreed with everything he said. It's still a ''review'' (as in his opinion on the game), he just didn't score the game, because apparently - at Polygon - you need to finish a game to give it a score (as it should be). Regardless of how he labeled it, I think it's the message itself that's more important. I tried to struggle my way through Star Fox Zero too. I gave up several times and tried it again the next day, until I decided that I just wasn't having fun and I gave up.

So far the only people that are having issues, obviously are the press. A relatively small part of everyone getting a switch. If that is replicated on the same scale when it's launched, Nintendo is going to have a pr nightmare. Lord help them if mine has issues. I've had bad luck with their hardware before.

Hopefully it's patch able

GameXplain have done some tests. Its not Joy-Con specific, and its, as I thought, due to distance of the Bluetooth, and physical obstruction.

I'm guessing that isn't fixable, then? Also, did they mention how far the range is?

@KirbyTheVampire They said it started happening around 10 feet away, which is the old joke of Bluetooth's max range, so I imagine that's fine, but the further you are the weaker a signal gets, that's just how it is. Bluetooth historically can do over 10ft, but its not ideal. The thing is, the problem only becomes noted, when there is a signal obstruction, typically a human body directly blocking the signal.

This means someone walking past wont matter, but covering the Joy-con or putting it behind you, will, because you flat out block a wide area that the signal would use, before its even gone too far.

The other things to consider are interference, as other devices can block each other, as there are only so many frequencies.

Example: My PS4 emits a VERY strong wireless signal for Remote Play with Vita, but this overrides our internet wireless and causes issues. It just happens.

The point is, don't walk too far and don't directly obstruct the system with something that is impassible to Bluetooth, like a large amount of flesh at close range.

@KirbyTheVampire GameXplain said they didn't have any issues when they sat close to the Switch. The issues started around 10 feet (or 3 metres for normal people) from the console itself.

That's still immensely disappointing, and unexpected of Nintendo. I hope it works underneath blankets because if it doesn't, that's one major way I can't play the switch. I remember playing xenoblade with the wii remote behind my head 90% of the time.

If it's an issue only at 10+ feet, then I guess that's understandable. But are allllll of these people reporting issues sitting at that range?

Posted this in the Switch pre order thread by mistake, thought it was this one and also posted in the Switch Controller discussion thread. I think more people will see it here though.

@Operative2-0 Anything using Bluetooth has this issue. The plus side is that the unlike Remote Play, it wont run and override wifi frequencies. At least in theory. I am of course assuming these do use Bluetooth.

Are your blankets partially permeable?

I'm going to an event in the morning! Incredibly excited to hold one of these bad boys! And yes, I will have my very own one in exactly 1 week but I certainly won't have ARMS, MK8 Deluxe or Spla2oon to play in a week 😁

Ah, I see. Well, if this issue doesn't go away, let's just hope that over time people learn that they need to sit less than 10 feet from their TVs.

Yea, it's not ideal obviously, but it's Bluetooth tech right now. Kind of a bummer, but my living room setup won't take me much further than 10 feet anyway. I also don't really plan on placing any large obstructions between the Joycons and the Switch unit.

A good question.

GameXplain solved it it seems though. Obstruction is the issue. But, that's a problem. I mean, it probably won't be a problem for me since I'll either use it in handheld mode or sitting directly in front of the TV 5 feet away, but it's still worrying.

@KirbyTheVampire Another reason I can conceive GameXplain not having as big an issue with this.

They aren't in a large, open office space with this thing like most press. It's Andre's apartment and bedroom. Smaller, more realistic usage scenarios.

I believe Zach from Switchforce had no issues with it either, and I'm pretty sure he just has a normal living room setup too. Probably not gonna be an issue for most people in that case, unless they have an absolutely gigantic TV.

@JaxonH
Yea, but as "worrying" as it is, is there really any way to solve it? Does anybody here have really good knowledge of Bluetooth?

It also seems like personal mileage will vary greatly depending on all sorts of factors from distance (obviously), the way you're holding the Joycon, other signals from other devices, even the layout of the room you're playing in.

I think this really solidifies that I'm going to get a Pro controller as soon as possible lol

What about the rooftop parties though?
