Topic: What are the great things about the Nintendo Switch

Just asking to see what this console has to offer. In my opinion it has no relevance yet as theirs nothing but Wii U ports and ports of older games watered down at 30fps and compressed visuals (e.g. 2016 Doom ect), even breath of the wild which is the most popular game by far on the system is a Wii U port which many people seem to be unaware of. Maybe I'm missing something so I'd like to know what do you like about the Nintendo Switch, or is it just purely for the future exclusives and/or that you're a loyal Nintendo fan?

It's the combination of portability and home console and portable home console via tabletop. It's the instant on, instant off via sleep mode. It's the single player, multiplayer anytime, anywhere with anyone. It's the sheer versatility of the console to meet any need and any desire at any time.

It's kind of like how attached you get to your cell phone. You have it with you everywhere and you rely on it for everything. That's how Switch is.

Before Switch, I had a 3DS, and I enjoyed the games on it very much. But I didn't get much actual use as a portable device. That is to say, I wasn't really a handheld gamer, I just happened to play a handheld system because I liked the games on it.

That's changed.

Now, I am both... I am everything. All I do is go to work and come home every day. You would think I wouldn't have many opportunities to play. But I do. I bring it to work with me every day and I'll play on my break. I'll play at shift change, my coworkers will watch me and they're always excited to see the new game I am playing. And we play together sometimes because everyone I know at my work has bought a Switch as a result of seeing mine. I've got people dying for MHXX to be localized so we can hunt together during shift change- these people had never even heard of that series before they saw me playing it. Thanks to the versatility of the console I can prop it up in table top mode, slide the controllers off and pass a controller to my friend and a few moments later we're playing Kirby together, or Ultra Street Fighter II, or Mario Kart 8 battle mode, or whatever. Having 2 controllers available at all times means whenever the situation arises, you can play video games with someone else.

And it's not just about that- it's the quality of portable gaming that you're getting. Handheld mode is great- don't get me wrong. Easily the best handheld gaming experience ever. Especially with the HD screen and full button set and motion controls and HD rumble- luxuries we have never had in a handheld. But the tabletop... it's like having a home console everywhere you go. Not just a handheld, but a literal mini home console. You prop it up on the kickstand and you slide off the controllers and you lean back in a chair, and you are enjoying a video game exactly like you would be at home. The screen might be a little smaller but, aside from that you are playing a home consold leaned back in the chair in the office at work. It's so freaking rad. Tabletop is my favorite feature of the system, by far.

And when I come home I don't have to load up save transfer tools to get my game back onto a home console like you would have to do with MH3U on 3DS/Wii U or certain Vita/PS4 games (and that's just the few games that actually had such tools- the vast majority of games either didn't have a handheld version or console version or if they had both, there was no way to cross save, and even if they did you had to spend $100 for the 2 versions). With Switch, uou literally just set the system in the dock and it automatically turns your TV on and switches the input for you. By the time you turn around and sit down in your recliner and grab a pro controller, your included console version of the game is right on the television where you left off. It's the slickest thing I've ever experienced since I started playing video games.

And that is the secret sauce. Having fully fledged home console games playable on a handheld system is indeed incredible, by all means. But it's being able to simply grab the system out of the dock and have the game instantly on that handheld- that is where the real magic happens. Then when you're downstairs, simply propping it on it's kickstand and sliding off the controllers, and it's instantly available as a little miniature home console, then when you're done you simply drop it in the dock and you're right back where you started. It's all just so instantaneous.

It has made me into not only a handheld gamer, but what I can only describe as a tribrid gamer... the "play anywhere, anytime, with anyone" lifestyle. It's one of those things where until you experience it for yourself it's hard to understand the appeal. Even if I never took my system out of the house I would still be addicted to the system. Because sometimes I want to watch Netflix, and I can just pop it out of the dock and keep playing in my recliner while I've got a show on. Or when I go downstairs to make coffee and I'm waiting on it to brew I can keep playing a game, or if I want to show someone something I can take the system into other rooms of the house, or even dock it on another TV with a spare dock. When I go visit my brother I can take my system with me and we can do local multiplayer together- he used to visit every weekend and we'd play local wireless Salmon Run.

Once you get a taste of that versatility to be anything you need it to be, and do anything you need it to do... it's hard to go back.

@Blathers So for you and others the portability is the thing that the console has to offer? Makes sense why I don't see the need for it if that's the case as I don't want a portable gaming console, I rarely if ever use my Vita or 3DS outside the house but that's just me. I will likely buy a Switch down the line for Pokemon and Smash but that's about it

It's a valid question, but one that we should be asking after the Switch has been on the market for a few years. It's easy to look at PS4 now and think of all the great games on there now. Except the PS4 is nearing its end. That console also started with mostly ports and slightly above average games.

On the other hand, the Switch, in its first year, had TWO game of the year contenders. I say all this as someone who doesn't have a Switch. It's an excellent console that I would gladly purchase, if not for the fact that PS4 is getting Ni No Kuni 2.

For now, I think your points about loyalty and future promises are spot on. People are excited about Pokemon, Smash, Metroid etc.

For the games. Pretty much the reason why you get a game console, no? You got Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, and Xenoblade. More are on the way too. There's not just Wii U ports, and they're not really hurting anyone because they take relatively much less resources.

Stopping all production of Wii U ports does not magically drastically increase how much new games we get, and making Wii U ports makes economical sense because not everyone had a Wii U. I have one and I still love my Wii U, but not many people did. And if you didn't own a Wii U, they're new games to you. Just because they're old does not mean everyone played the games.

Of course, if none of the games appeal to you, then skip. Free world, after all.

@NotAceAttorney That's the thing with the Switch, it's technically a next gen console but it's specs are that of last gen consoles which kinda confuses me. I don't think it's completely out of the question to judge a console well over a year after release, plenty of time for new fresh content. Although in my opinion the times of Nintendo being exciting may be up and it saddens me to say that, my guess is that even at the end of the Switch's life span we'll be left with many indie games, watered down ports and the saving grace will be a few exclusives like Mario, Zelda, Smash, Pokemon

Also while is irrelevant to this topic, it's very much up for debate but PS4 is far from the end imo, in fact I think we're just over half way, there's so so many great games coming to PS4 which are yet to be released. Most people think the next gen consoles will be here in 2019 but that's way to soon imo. I think Microsoft won't release another console period and the PS5 COULD in fact be download only/streaming console. Don't expect another Playstation console before 2021 possibly later imo, it has to focus on all games becoming native 4K to warrant a new console imo, and we're far from that in this moment

@EvilLucario I have no problem with ports but it seems pretty much all of Nintendo's big announcements are Wii U games and as a gamer that disappoints me, I get that we're in the "remaster era" but is porting a new game to a new console for it to run at the exact same resolution even a remaster? Very lazy from Nintendo imo, I know many people missed out on the Wii U but that's not an excuse to recycle old games, I'm sure I can't be the only one who wants something new and not a port of games we've already purchased brand new within the last 3-4 years

Iirc someone did a list and the port vs not port isn't as high? And at the very minimum SSB don't look like a port then again I have no idea or interest with SSB.

I'll also say why I like about Nintendo Switch though, I find it's the versatility of how easy it is to go in and out of a game (+ freeing my laptop to let me do chatting or searching up information >:] ). Like if I can choose between PC or Switch, I'll try to go with Switch (because AAA games have barely any regional prices anymore, it's easy to pick, indie is still hard choice though, half price vs Switch's USD price... gah).

It manages to make you able to just "oh I need to go out, let me just put this Switch to sleep for a second- and done! And if you want to pick up a game for 10 minutes- it's there and easy to go in.

It's really enjoyable in a lot of ways.

(Also I do admit that I'm using the portability function 99% of the time while staying at home. The ability to lounge on the bed while playing is nice too xD)

This is what I expect of a xbox/ps4 fanboy reply on a Nintendo forum. If you can't see it already then it's already to late to say anything here. Love how those use the word "port" but fail to notice how xbox/ps4 also ports. But then again I am just talking to a wall here.

@Illusionsoftime1
Was looking around and it seems the amount of ports:
Bayonetta 1 & 2 Wii U: 10/24/2014
Switch: 2/16/2018

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Wii U: 12/5/2014
Switch: 7/13/2018

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Wii U: 2/21/2014
Switch: 5/4/2018

Hyrule Warriors: 9/25/2014
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition: 5/18/2018

Mario Kart 8 5/30/2014
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 4/28/2017

Pokken Tournament 3/18/2016
Pokken Tournament DX: 9/22/2017

While the original list had SSB, I didn't put it in because by now I think it's probably a new release (And I have no idea of fighting games' port and blahblah in the matter, so it's up to you to consider it as one or no). And didn't list of BoTW because I view same day release isn't port and more like mutli-plat release, but if you want to consider those two as port then it's up to you.

While the already released:
Kirby Star Allies
ARMS
Splatoon 2
Mario Rabbids
Fire Emblem Warriors
Super Mario Odyssey
Xenoblade Chronicles 2

And announced:
Fire Emblem
Bayonetta 3
Yoshi
Metroid Prime 4
Pokemon
Mario Tennis Aces

Some other 3rd party that was listed (won't list everything):
Octopath Traveller
No More Heroes
Mario + Rabbids (Released)

Obviously not everything but I'm just hunting from what other people have said here in other forum post.

@Illusionsoftime1 But they aren't that major announcements. At Nintendo Directs, they just do a rapid-fire announcements of ports and don't dwell at them much. Tropical Freeze is coming to Switch! Cool, next game. The World Ends With You! Next game. Hyrule Warriors! Next game. Mario Tennis Aces! Let's spend time here because it's a new game and we don't know that much about it. Next game: Captain Toad. Etc. Then they end with a relatively big hitter like Dark Souls Remastered (first officially announced there) and Smash Bros.

This is something I've been thinking of, but I get the feeling that these announcements are there to free up space for E3. They're getting all the filler/small games out of the way first, then at E3 they can go ham with all the new big cool games they want to show. Blind faith? Maybe. But if Nintendo is serious about wanting to sell 20+ million units (directly said by Kimishima as the Switch's goal for the second year), then they better impress.

I've been in the same line of thinking as you. There's not too much exciting that is actually exclusive to the system. For me personally, Super Mario Odyssey is really the only currently released Switch-exclusive title that is of interest to me.

Super Mario Odyssey is fun, but not a game that I really would say one should buy the system over. After a few weeks or so of having the system I bit the bullet and bought Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I really didn't want to spend money on that, but in just a couple of months since I bought it, I can say soundly that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has seen a ton more play from me than Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U. I would even say a lot more than Mario Kart Wii as well.

Like you portability wasn't really a factor of interest. It was neat, but not a system selling concept. But again, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe comes and kind of changes my mind. I can now pick up and play Mario Kart - a full Mario Kart, much better and more comfortable to play than Mario Kart 7 - online anytime anywhere I want.

The biggest thing is that turning off the system saves where you are in a game. I can pause in a game and come right back where I left off. This has been the best feature. It is a true pick up and play system.

Er, sorry this post was a mess. lol

1. All the best games from the WiiU. Like, all of them. With all the DLC included, and improved graphics, added modes and new options.

2. A few of the greatest top-tier PC games of the last few years. Not many yet, I admit, but they are really good ones.

3. A pretty extensive library of some of the most legendary fighting games and shmups of the Nineties.

4. A very good selection of the greatest indie games like Stardew Valley, Celeste, Night in the Woods, the Flame in the Flood, Gorogoa, the Binding of Isaac, etc.

5. New installments of great Nintendo series like Xenoblade Chronicles, Splatoon, Zelda and Super Mario.

6. New exclusive games like ARMS, Mario+Rabbids, Floor Kids, and Golf Story.

7. A 2018 packed with more of everything I listed above.

8. A flexible system that you can play however you want. Console? Yup. Handheld? Of course, and without sacrificing quality. Motion controls? Indeed. Touch? Yes sir. One of the best wireless controllers ever? Oh yeah. On your lunch break and your mate wants to join your game? Easy peasy, slide off the Joy-Cons and your multiplayer is on. Rocking out in Hyrule on the flat-screen but your wife wants to catch up on Criminal Minds? Switch from TV to tabletop in three seconds, and later on carry it into the toilet or to bed without missing a beat.

9. This is not a unique feature, but ALL the features - the Switch just has it all. What do you want in a system? If it's raw, screaming power and graphics so sharp you could puncture the hull of an Empire-class Fire Nation battleship, don't buy a Switch. But also, don't buy any other console. Go PC or go home, because real power isn't on a console. So many people talk about how the Switch is "gimped" compared to XBone or PS4. Honey, I've got news for you, if you aren't playing on a PC you're already playing a gimped version.

So, yeah, if you want that ULTIMATE POWER look elsewhere. Ditto if all you play is "AAA" titles like AC, COD, Far Cry and the like, because those games really, really won't be coming to Switch anytime soon. But if you play literally anything else, the Switch almost definitely has something that can satisfy you, and in the next year or so it will have many more.

Next question please.

The versatility of the system is amazing, I really enjoy the possibility to keep it always near me even if I rarely use it outside of my home, there are already many great games from third parties too and for a console that is only one year old this is very promising for the future, having an Elder scroll game on a Nintendo console - and on a handheld Nintendo console too!!! - is something exciting and mind blowing for me even if Skyrim is not my favourite game in the TES series, and yes I am a "somewhat" loyal Nintendo fan. That does not mean I force myself to like everything they do (I didn't like the DS and I didn't like the Wii U so I gave up on them pretty quickly, I also am not a big fan of the Nintendo 64) but I usually like what they do, I often prefer them than the other companies (I expecially don't like Microsoft Xbox and Playstation 3 and 4 - I liked a lot PS1 and PS2) so I usually trust them and hope it does not happen too often that they create consoles like the DS or the Wii U that I don't like. In this case I really am amazed by the Switch, there are many improvements that I'd like to see and many things missing that I would like but it is already exciting as it is right now, I just enjoy it for what it is now and hope those improvements will come with future updates.

Dear, Mr. Illusion of Time...
I play Nintendo Switch for Good games.
Doesn't matter 1st or 3rd party, AAA or not, Indies or Major Developers, Ported or Not, i play their games, as long still appropriate for Kids and Teen.
I LOVE Portability.
It feels great.
I can even play Nintendo Switch on my bed while i'm lying on bed when i feel tired to turn on my TV and my consoles to play.
If you think playing in Handheld doesn't make you feel like a gamer (Because you used to play with bigger screen and sit down on couch), you were wrong.
You are still a Gamer, doesn't matter playing in Handheld or Consoles.
You need to make a new habit by playing Handhelds on the go.
There is nothing wrong, just be confident.

For the games for Switch, i can say Switch library are Much Much better than other machines. You can try AAA or Indies, doesn't matter their label, even some Indie games are better than typical AAA games.

And one more thing...
AAA games are NOT the Gods to be worshipped.
My Switch games are combination of AAA 1st party (Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda BOTW), Ported from other machines (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Lego City Undercover, Pokken Toyrnament), Indies (Portal Knights, Overcooked, Poi: Explorer Edition), 3rd party (Puyo Puyo Tetris, Mario + Rabbids), etc.
Change your mindset.

So for me the great thing about the Switch has to be its versatility. While the handheld/docked part of it is obvious its the fact that the Joycons are versatile as well meaning that i can quickly and simply go from playing alone with two Joycons to playing with 2 people just by passing one over (an absolute godsend if you have small children!). However it has to be said my least favourite thing is (and its always been this way) the Nintendo Tax we seemingly have to pay every generation. Its getting tiring now paying a premium price for something that was a premium price the previous generation. No doubt whenever the new VC is released we shall be made to pay a silly amount if we want to play NES/SNES/N64etc games without any way of transferring previously bought titles from other systems.

In short love the Switch, hate Nintendo Tax
