GameCube and Wii discs aren't DVDs and Wii U discs aren't Blu-rays. Yes, they are very similar (in terms of physical size, storage capacity etc.), but they are not the same.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"
I remember wanting a USB plug-in for the Wii U that let you play DS and/or 3DS games on the Wii U, using the TV as the top screen and the GamePad as the touch screen. This wouldn't have been too dissimilar from the Super Game Boy for the SNES or the Game Boy Player for the GameCube.
They did wind up having DS games on Virtual Console, but I still would have preferred a way to use already existing DS carts. With the Wii U failing, the dream is dead.
With the Switch being as successful as it is so far, who knows what kinds of add-ons it'll get? I certainly like the idea of being able to play Wii / Wii U games on the Switch, though I feel as though Nintendo would be more willing to push downloads for Wii / Wii U games on Switch should they bring them over at all. (Which I personally would be happy with but, again, I'd love the option for using games I already own.)
While I don't know all the details, you need more than just a player to play previous discs. You need the correct OS/architecture to play Wii U, Wii, and Gamecube games, all of which have different ones. Remember how the Wii played GC games, but only with a Gamecube controller? Remember how the Wii U has to become a Wii to even play Wii games?
Yeah, not quite that simple and quite frankly not worth it.
