@Hallonblad thank you! I realise for a lot of people it will be like asking them to pick a favourite child/pet!
Grinding doesn't put me off really, not if there's an objective end goal (like an ultimate end boss or good endgame content) although frustration can set in with games having large amounts of collect X of Y to craft Z, when all X items have a ~1% RNG drop chance!
Characters are a big plus for me, I haven't played JRPG's this long and come to expect stellar and award winning stories; for me the characters go a long way to offsetting the dodgy/tropey/obvious stories and even some dodgy gameplay to a large extent. It's mostly why FF13 is the weakest of the FF games because on top of a largely linear game (until post-game) and a slightly dodgy but I still liked it more than most story, the characters are either devoid of likeable characteristics (Lightning), eminently forgettable (Fang/Snow/Sazh) or brain-killingly annoying to the point of get them out of my game! (Hope/Vanille)! Slightly concerning given your feedback on that but I'm happy to wait-see, obviously different characters resonate differently with people!
I'm more than happy/lucky to be able to grab both, it's just with all the money in the world there are only so many hours you can play so I'm seizing the opportunity to get through one of these behemoths whilst I can. For all I know I may be able to B2B them, but more likely is I'll play one now and another in the future should the unthinkable happen and companies stop releasing games for six months!
@BrainOfGrimlock I didn't dislike the characters per se, they just were very much the typical anime characters that you'd come to expect, very by the numbers. Again, I like this stuff so for me it was fine. They just didn't really stand out for me (except Poppi. Poppi is the best.)
If you buy the Torna expansion for XC2 (which you should! Great value for your money,) you will get some background and fleshing out of some main game characters that made me like/care about them more.
I haven't touched Disgaea 1 yet, but I have heard it has better characters and a more well-written story. Maybe that game is something to take into consideration? I can't recommend it myself though, as I have yet to actually play it. Just putting the idea out there.
Joking aside, yep I’d spotted Disgea 1 appear on the eshop too. 2 thoughts on that are;
1) go with 5 first; surely more accesible given made more recently & it’ll help me learn/familiarise with a lot of the Disgea systems so it makes 1 that much more accessible
2) go with 1 first, because if you play 5 with all the QoL enhancements you may struggle to go back to 1
As much as I love Persona 3, playing it after 4/5 it feels a little (and i do mean a little as it’s still a great game with some of the series best characters!) dated for example...?
I’ve got a good few days to decide yet as RDR feels utterly huge; i’d say at the moment i’m 60/40 in favour of XC2 based on comments/things i’ve read?
So I am really wanting these five games (I download mostly), but I can't decide which ones to pick up first: Diablo 3, Disgaea 1, Disgaea 5, Valkryia Chronicles 4, Shining Resonance?
@BrainOfGrimlock I really think you would like Xenoblade 2. I could talk for hours but I'll keep it simple. Its tied with Mario Odyssey as my favourite Switch game. The story is top notch with a cast of characters that while nothing revolutionary are handled perfectly and whom you will become attached to. The visuals and music please consistently. Battle mechanics are sound and with the exception of one location I'd say the game is frustration free. If you have any specific questions ask away.
My wife is really into motion controls at the moment after playing Super Mario Party. Any recommendations?? 1 2 Switch and Go Vacation seem like good options for her and she doesn't mind if there a bit 'waggle'.
@ReaderRagfish Is it normal that the Joy-Cons suck in Taiko no Tatsujin? I remember Wiimotes worked a lot better for these kind of games. With the adapter from Smash Bros. Ultimate, can I use my DK Bongos on that game? It's probably best to get this game on retail along with the original Taiko controller. Using Joy-Cons on the demo was a bad idea.
@BrainOfGrimlock heard good things about the game. I’m not a metrovania fan though. I am picky about my game selections. I’m still looking. Wish every game had a demo. It would make it so much easier.
