How do I beat this thing? Giant tentacles swiping everywhere, lazer beams going across the screen. What the heck is going on with this boss? I guess i'm not as good at video games as I thought. This boss is making me cry like a little girl...help!

I'd argue this boss known as The Experiment is the toughest in the game, but the key to success is to learn the tells for each attack.
Once you learn the tells, they're pretty easy to avoid.
What method are you using to attack it? If you are trying to use Storm Missiles, that might be putting you in harms way, and charge beam shots are actually very inefficient for dealing damage once you've acquired the Plasma Beam, so stick to rapid fire Plasma Beam shots or Ice Missiles, whatever you prefer.
However the Storm Missiles are very useful for when it puts it four arms up on the ceiling whilst it does that cross-hair targeting attack, defeating each limb will replenish some energy.

Later in the fight when it goes to swing both of its arms together, after swinging once from each side, if you jump to the safe spot in the top-center too early you'll jump directly into its head and take damage, try to avoid that.

If this is the boss you fight that is preventing the heating from working (it appears from a tower over lava in the background) I beat it yesterday after probably 20 attempts.

1) lock onto it with storm missiles continually.
2) when it vomits the streams of purple goo at you, wait for it to pause then dash to any clear spot. Lock on and missile it again and again, repeating the pattern.
3) when it drops to the floor and vomits in a semi circle ceiling to floor get near to its chin (you’ll be safe from the attack here), slam missiles into its face until you get the flash for a melee counter. Hit it with the melee attack and when it is stunned briefly shoot it again in the face. This will trigger a close combat scene (and drop some health and ammo) with Samus climbing up onto its face. Repeatedly hit it with missiles during this fight (Samus automatically aims at the monster throughout so just keep firing missiles; beam attacks, unless charged, do nothing).
4) if it activates the fans on the right of the screen run left to right (the wind will keep you near the left side). Jump over and between the semi-circle lasers that shoot at you from the right (the pattern is always identical). The fans will keep blowing for a while after the lasers finish but you can lock on and get some more shots in on its face (don’t try hitting it during the jumping section).
5) if it does the claw swipes from left or right simply space jump in the air continuously to avoid them. When it does the double swipe (signalled by it swinging both arms against both walls) you have to a quickly get in the centre of the screen in front of it and space jump straight up to avoid them. Stay in the air until the animation is finished as the double swipe can hit you on the back swing too.
6) when it does the funny attack where it grips the walls with four limbs and tries to track you with a purple circle, dodge the circle but lock onto each ‘foot’ with your storm missiles, one at a time. This destroys the limbs and I’m pretty sure stops it regenerating (which is why it took me so long to beat it; I only did this in my last, successful fight with it.)

It takes quite a while and at least 3/4 of the melee/missile sequence above but eventually it’ll go down. A tough fight but actually I found Kraid more tiring with having to spam the missile attack for practically the whole fight!
