The whole timing aspect makes my hair stand on end. It's similar to the time the Red Ash Kickstarter was announced before comcept had really established trust with the community. I got the feeling the company was just trying to gather the money they could before people found out the horrors within. I didn't play Mighty No. 9, but from what I've heard, I was right (no offense to those who enjoyed it).

Not a very good analogy.

Kickstarter=pay now or it won't exist.
Nintendo preorder= pay now or just pay later when it exists and you've seen it.

@Dezzy It wasn't really an analogy. I acknowledge that the two situations are very different. But they give me the same nervous feeling.

It's just occurred to me those people who like to collect Zelda guide books will now have an incomplete guide.

Yeah, I get that with girls. They usually hide their quality upfront too.

I really hope the negativity doesn't keep them fron making future story DLC. I love games that have more content made for them after the devs finish up the games and come up with neat story ideas. It adds replayability value and gives you something to do months later after you've beat the game. Sometimes, story DLC even has stories and characters better than the main quests in games.

Also, do you guys know what this means? It means the game hopefully doesn't "end" after you hit the credits. That after beating the main quest the game saves and you get to see the consequences of defeating Ganon and saving the world. You get to talk to people and experience life after all the trauma and tragedy. Besides, I've always thought that Link would end up with warrior syndrome after defeating a major evil. Always looking for people to help and baddies to fight because that's all he knows.

The negativity is largely Nintendo's fault, to be honest. The way the presented it all in today's circumstances was fairly poor.

Oh, it won't. Nintendo won't require that players beat the game before playing the DLC, though. It'll just be different areas or side stories like Skyrim.

This expansion pack business was off putting at first blush mainly because I have a hard time seeing how they would add content to the game without taking something out that should be played during the main play through or making a small side story that is inconsequential to the main line. Zelda games after feel so complete that it is hard to fathom the extra content being good without being an absolutely massive post main story like the Witcher expansions. But, after thinking for awhile though, what if the pull a Bioshock Inifinte Elizabeth type dlc? What if you were able to actually play as Zelda in her own storyline? Something like a prequel to Link waking up where Zelda needs to beat a dungeon to get to Link or an explanation for where Zelda is during a part of the game. For instance, you could make a game out of the time Zelda spends out on her own during Skyward Sword. That would be worth the whole $20 for me and could easily be done in a one dungeon/short story format.

@MrHero

Plenty of games have done story DLC well. The ones they did for the whole Mass Effect trilogy were excellent.
The Dark Souls 1 DLC, whilst being fairly story-light obviously, was one of the best parts of the whole game.

Being a completionist just got a lot harder for me in relation to this news. I just wish the DLC wasn't all or nothing to buy.

DLC is great for those people that look at the value of the original game and reason that the price matches it's value. That's how businesses want you to think of it, after all. The DLC is extra, and the option to keep playing for a cost is welcome.

But then there are people who just want to buy a complete game. Any mention of DLC is simply finding out that the price of their complete game is higher than they thought.

Neither of these perspectives are wrong. I can't say I don't miss the days of buying a game once.

Now, I previously thought I read that you only obtain the extra treasure chests around the great plateau if you preorder right away. I double-checked just before complaining about it here, and I guess as it turns out, it doesn't matter when you purchase it. That actually alleviates my main concern about the DLC. Since I'm free to buy the DLC whenever I want, I take back what I said about it being shifty.

I find it to just be bad form, announcing it now before the release. You have people that are spending hundreds to play the game day one. And before it's even out you're telling us "oh yeah, there's more you need to buy if you want the full breath of the wild experience, and the first one isn't out until summer".

Overall I think the main thing I have issue with is just the announcement timing. The content isn't really debatable until we see what it is.

But in a time where people are weary of the switch and its expensive components, adding in another cost for Zelda probably wasn't the smartest thing to do right now.

@Operative2-0 So you would rather they lie by omission and wait to announce the DLC until after release, when purchases are final and no one can choose to cancel their pre-order?

Seems like you're getting upset at trifling semantics.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

TuVictus

@Haru17 lie by omission? How is that... What? What does the DLC being announced now have anything to do with people who pre ordered the base game?

TuVictus

Haru17

@Operative2-0 They know they're making DLC before release. You're saying that you dislike them announcing that fact before 3/3/2017 — an entirely insubstantial distinction.

The way they chose is more forthright.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

TuVictus

Still not sure what that has to do with pre orders or "semantics", but oh well. I suppose in some way it's nice for some people, but I'm definitely of the mind that they chose a poor time to announce it.

@Operative2-0 Your whole mindset makes no sense. The DLC isn't due until Summer and Autumn. The game itself is already complete AND busting with more content than any Zelda game prior. Most people will probably buy the DLC individually, or when they have the funds to justify it. $19.99 isn't even a steep price for a season pass. The developers have to spend extra time and resources in order to make all of this content for players that still have that Zelda itch months after finishing the base game. There's nothing that anyone should feel distraught about. You're paying for a game that's te exact same price as the two HD remasters, yet has more quality and content than both of them combined x2.
