It would seem a waste just to release another bog-standard 2D Zelda in 2019 after all of these resources have been poured into Breath.

I could see another 2d Zelda, they sell well and require less resources to make. Also with Switch's battery being drained when offering big games in handheld mode I can see Ninty offering smaller and simpler games specifically for portable gaming.

I think we're going to wait longer than we think. I don't think a Majora's Mask type of game works in this day and age for Zelda. If the next game reuses all the assets and visuals, not sure it would go down well.

I may be remembering this wrong I believe WW and TP used the same engine but was heavily modified as they had already started working on Wind Waker 2 (which was different to Phantom Hourglass) and was land based.

Thing is, Nintendo already has a huge library of high-quality, transferable environmental assets ready and waiting after they ship Breath of the Wild. It would seem like a waste not to repurpose them in any way.

@jump Could be true, but I used MM as an example since they made that game in a very short amount of time. TP still took 4 years to develop. The game after BOTW will most likely take at least another four years, so that's in 2021 (that sounds like the distant future btw.. I'm getting old..).

I think they might tweak some details of the engine in responde to fan feedback, but I'm sure they're going to reutilize the engine.
I doubt they spent 9 years with the freaking engine just to throw it to the trash after the game releases- It would have to be on the same level as the Luminous Engine (as in, hell to develop) to not reuse it.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Agreed. Since my impression of the BotW engine is that it does almost everything except run my car, they would be foolish NOT to use the engine for other things. Maybe not necessarily a Zelda game, but I could see Nintendo using it for other franchises as well.

As for the next Zelda game....Unless they make a spinoff of Breath that uses the same engine, the next title is more likely to be a 2D game. I'm not too fussed about when it comes out since there are still a few big wigs in the franchise that I haven't played yet.

Currently playing: Pokemon Scarlet - The Indigo Disk, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch)

@Tyranexx I guess I was referring more to the next 3D Zelda game.

With people being so crazy on "spoilers" what's the rule of thumb about trailer analysing?

@jump Old or new trailers? We've dissected old trailers here before, so I guess that's fine. Don't think anyone would object to that.

@jump Personally, I would appreciate if you would post post-Jan. 12th stuff in spoiler tags. And maybe a little non-spoilery phrase before the tags identifying what your spoiler is discussing (i.e. weekly screenshot, concept art, Game Informer trailer, interview, etc.). But that's just what I would prefer

@Frosty_09 Nice catch! I totally forgot we still had one more holiday between New Year's and launch. It seems like a great piece to end on.

@Frosty_09 I want to buy an artbook of those, or have a bunch of them show up randomly in my desktop background, or something. That style is so peaceful.

Dezzy

How did he manage the pointy end of the heart with a sword slash?

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

Octane

@Dezzy If you start perpendicular to the outline of the heart, with your sword pointed towards the tip of the heart and slash inwards, do it from both sides and you're left with a 90 degree angle.

DLC announced!!!

Starting when the game launches on 3rd March, players will be able to purchase an Expansion Pass for £17.99/€19.99, granting access to two new sets of downloadable content for the game when they become available later this year. Immediately upon pre-purchase or purchase of the Expansion Pass, three new Treasure Chests will appear in the game’s Great Plateau area. One of these Treasure Chests will contain a shirt with a Nintendo Switch logo which Link can wear during his adventure, exclusive to the Expansion Pass. The other two Treasure Chests will deliver useful items. The first content pack is scheduled to launch this summer and will include the addition of a Cave of Trials challenge, a new hard mode and a new feature for the in-game map. The second content pack will launch in Holiday 2017, and adds new challenges that will let players enjoy a new dungeon and a new original story. The Expansion Pass will be available for both the Nintendo Switch and Wii U versions of the game and are identical. Content packs cannot be purchased individually.

“The world of Hyrule which we created for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is so large and vibrant that we wanted to offer more for players to experience within it,” said Nintendo developer Eiji Aonuma, the long-time producer of the series. “With this new Expansion Pass, we hope that fans will play, explore and enjoy the game even more.”

Wow, interesting news either way

Where's the mod support for BotW?

While surprising at first, DLC for BotW makes sense especially given the connection to games like Skyrim and Witcher 3.

In theory I'm all for it but then I remember how small the memory is on the Switch.

Also Link will be wearing a Nintendo Switch shirt on the Wii U version, HA.
