This game has been a lot of fun so far though would've been even better if I hadn't watched the entirety of E3 2016 Treehouse day 1 as I still remember the solutions to the puzzles in the plateau shrines despite it having been 9 months ago.
Hopefully E3 2017 isn't too focused on Super Mario Odyssey.
@Caryslan Fantastic, runs very well and unless you want the portability factor there's not really a reason to get the Switch version unless you're planning on getting the Switch soon.
Great so far. Seems pretty much identical to the Switch except for the lower resolution. It's also good for playing on the gamepad.
I was worrying it was gonna be like Xenoblade X, which was just awful to play on the gamepad due to the screen layout and text size, etc. It's not though. Totally playable on gamepad.
@GoronBrudda No I don't have that problem, because I only buy games digitally. The game is actually installed already, just waiting for the update data download to finish and install it... @jump Honestly, I couldn't wait for shipment of the physical copy to arrive like you guys. I would just buy it from the eshop (or from a key shop like I did).
@emaan Why wait for the Switch when you can play BotW right now? From what we've heard, both versions won't be that different, so I'd opt for enjoying the game right now instead of waiting until you have a Switch.
Also - at least in Europe - the Wii U version is slightly cheaper. I've only paid 56,25€.
Actually, my pre-ordered Switch will arrive tomorrow but so far I bought BotW only for Wii U because I'm not sure whether I'll keep the Switch but I definitely don't want to wait any longer. I've been waiting for years and I want to finally jump right into the next LoZ adventure.
I'm really tempted to do this! (I nearly bought the WiiU eShop version last night) I already have both the WiiU version and the Switch version coming though. (no regrets about doing that because it's memorabilia and I collect this stuff) but the sensible part of me is saying "come one man, you don't need a 3rd copy, and you've already spent too much money on switch stuff this month", and then the Zelda addict in me is saying "C'mon man, you can play this RIGHT NOW, and it's frickin' ZELDA!! You know you wanna!!". Which voice I finally listen to, I can't say. (I'm trying to behave myself, but MY GOD it's taking every single ounce of restraint!!
Btw, if anyone's curious. Don't leave your gamepad too far away if you're playing with the Pro Controller. There's a few points in the game where you have to use the gyroscope (but only the gyroscope as far as I saw so far)
It's a shame the rubber-banded wii-remote method doesn't work.
In no other Zelda game can I feel like I am alone in an area miles away from any village, and then turn around and, to my sudden surprise, find a random traveller walking along the path right behind me who I can sell stuff to. I love it.
@Grumblevolcano@Dezzy Thank you both for your response. I have one more question, does it support the Wii U Pro Controller like Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD?
@Caryslan - Sorry to poke in here but yes, you can play with the Wii U Pro Controller. I pressed its buttons at the title screen and have played with it since.
Speaking of controls though, as anyone else here accidentally pressed the wrong buttons when trying to do something? Even now, I kinda struggle to remember what everything does...

Wow, people weren't kidding when they said this game was hard. Feels kind of like Dark Souls. Even when fighting a group of Bokoblins, I have to survey the environment and thinks of ways to approach them that don't just involve charging in, which has invariably led to my slaughter TWICE now thanks to one of them carrying a nasty club that kills me in two hits.
Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)
People have forgotten that the game was principally made for the Wii U. It was unlikely to be terrible, or they would've downgraded their designs for the gameworld.
Exactly! But already when the first screenshots emerged (in 2013?), people - even one of my friends - started saying 'they'll have to downgrade it, it can't look that good on Wii U' and other stuff.
And even after seeing extensive video footage last year, some - this time another friend - spoke negatively about the draw distance and some of the pre-release videos seemed to confirm that.
But overall the game runs really smooth and even if there were more frequent framerate dips - which they aren't - it'd be normal for an open world game, they even do that on gaming PCs.
I don't even notice any draw distance issues (anymore?). But at the same time, I also don't register any aliasing anymore and that's definitely something I registered when I started the game, so it might be just the game's world distracting me too much.
@Nicolai No, not even close, I still have only uncovered two sections of the map, it still feels like I've seen a lot. I can't imagine how that would be possible and still fun at the same time, but I guess there are speedrunners capable of anything.
I had some interesting experiences, like when my horse went for a swim, or a shrine with Portal-like puzzles with a sphere. This was actually the first shrine that was challenging and so far I haven't figured out how to get the extra chest. I definitely have to go back there later, so the stamps on the map do come in handy.
Oh, and also: while it may be true that you don't get any rupees for grass-cutting, do try it from time to time, you might get a special yet very familiar reward.
This game is just a dream. If you haven't already, stick it on Pro HUD and just go.
There really isn't a better game out there - I've only played about 3 or 4 hours, but I feel like I could play it non stop forever.
I'm not gonna say it's my favorite yet, cos I've not spent enough time with it and Mario Kart 8 has set a very high bar but is a completely different entity, but exploring this place is just magical and the production value is superb. Just seems so well put together.
One minor issue: is there a way to cycle which arrows you're using whilst you've got the bow out, rather than having to go into the + menu and change arrows there?
Also, am I right in thinking there is no e-manual for the game? (not that it really needs one, everything just comes together so fluidly as you play).
The box is bloody awful, the horrible cover aside the game pics on the back look grainy and reminds of pirate dvds you get in the pub. Inside cover poster is nice though.
@jump my thought exactly - the cover on my copy looks badly cut on the sides too. Did you get a poster in your copy?! I just got an eShop leaflet - way better quality than the game cover itself.
Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...
Game is absolutely worth every ounce of hype and then some. Wow.
Tested Wii U version for comparison. Looks surprisingly similar, although I did notice way more jaggies (first thing I noticed actually, it's really apparent after playing Switch version), and noticeable slowdown in the grass which I didn't really experience in Switch version. I know it supposedly happens in both (just worse on Wii U) but I haven't had any problems yet on Switch while Wii U it was immediately after the game started, right there in the starting area grass. Also little details and stuff, which most probably won't pick up on unless they've played both to compare.
My gosh tho, that Switch is a real work of art. Joycons work flawlessly, switching works flawlessly, so many ways to play and all of them legit...
I'm twitterpated with Zelda and the Switch. Best hardware/software launch since the N64, maybe even the best ever.
