I need to see an extended gameplay session of this before I decide. Sure it looks like a cute concept but it also seems super simplistic and like the novelty will wear off very fast. More I think about it the less interesting it seems. But wouldn’t mind being proven wrong

Side note: When did the color purple become the universal color of evil? It seems like more and more games are associating purple with the aura of the bad guys. What did the color purple ever do to hurt anyone?

For a second I seriously thought this was going to be the Oracle games, guess I'm okay with an all new game. I do wonder if the Oracle games will still show up at some point, though. I never really played those.

@Kimyonaakuma Zelda is a Wise Mage/Sage primarily. It tends to be a root identity that is shared among all versions and this Zelda looks to be LTTP Zelda (I am speculating here. As Nintendo tends to use this style and similar for LTTP esque games. Obviously I don’t know when this is set. ) who isn’t a warrior but is magical and a telepath. So it fits imo. She (the player) uses her brain to solve issues plus if this is an alternate end to LTTP (or something similar where the magical weapons were in dungeons that Link has already raided) then Link literally took all the good weapons with him when he sunk into the abyss.

I am all for Zelda using every facet of her abilities but we have to keep in mind which Zelda we are playing as. Unless they do a hand wave and say she had been trained all along but couldn’t break free of Ganon at full power. That being said if they ever use OoT Zelda I would expect her to be a Ninja Magic Archer.

Edited for clarity so no one gets confused by my speculation.

There seems to be less and less chance of remaking Oracles, but I'm still hoping for it in the near future.

Interesting concept, but doesn't anyone else think it looks really underbaked? I genuinely thought it was a fangame for a hot few moments. Spawn placeholder items with meh graphics?

@Tayrailbridge The visual style was cute for a remake of Link's Awakening, but for something entirely new I agree, it seems somewhat... cheap? Maybe it'll surprise us but I'll need to see a lot more to even consider it.

@NinChocolate: I agree it's mind boggling that they haven't ported it over. Not quite sure why but being that the only way you can play it is the 3DS and Nintendo obviously doesn't support the 3DS anymore you'd think they would.

Top announcement for me this direct. I've been wanting both new 2D Zelda and a Zelda with Zelda as the main character for ages. I adore the art style.

Although part of me wanted traditional-ish combat (but with more magic because it's not Link), I will definitely take this.... 2D puzzle-platformer meets TotK? It will be interesting to see how it works out. I love that Zelda can just make huge rocks and smash enemies with them. 😆

Can't wait to get this game.

My wife just started another playthrough of Breath of the Wild and asked the perennial question of whether there's been a game where you play as Zelda. (Yes, several, but, apart from a few bits of Spirit Tracks, they're not exactly canon material.) Obviously it did the trick.

I'm just happy not to have to wait another six years for a new game in the series. Grezzo are presumably doing the heavy lifting with development, based on the look of it.

This game wasn't what I was expecting, but since when has the Zelda series held to conventions for the past while? XD This looks like an alternative take on the ALttP timeline, but it could very well be its own thing. The puzzle elements make sense; Zelda traditionally represents the wisdom portion of the Triforce, and puzzles have had a "brainy" association in the series previously via Oracle of Ages's gameplay. It seems like I'm not the only one who caught some sandbox vibes from the rod.

I would like to see remakes of both Oracle games in this style too. I slightly prefer the sprite work of the era of games this is based on, but I don't mind this visual style they introduced in Link's Awakening 2019 either.

@Ryu_Niiyama It doesn't look like this is an alternate timeline of Link to the Past, given that the final fight of that game took place on top of the Pyramid in the Dark World- where as the final fight that triggers this game takes place in some unknown area of normal Hyrule.

Over all, it seems like they're using the map of Link Between Worlds and Link to the Past as a base- but it's still drastically different. The original Death Mountain seems to be frozen over while there's a new one in the opposite corner of the map. There's races that shouldn't exist in the original versions of this Hyrule which exist now. The Deku tree is in the lost woods again, when he never appeared in this timeline at all before possibly BOTW (if that happens in the Downfall Timeline).

What it seems like is that this is probably around 100-200 years after A Link Between Worlds, given the similarities in geography but massive differences in biomes.

I've been seeing mixed reception on the game. Some people aren't happy that this game has sandbox elements, and others aren't happy you're playing as Zelda. Some are thrilled to be playing as Zelda to the point where they believe that's the only reason needed for the game to exist.

Personally I think the game looks solid. I'll have to see more on it, but as someone who wasn't sold on the concept of Zelda being the protagonist of a Zelda game- this looks to be a pretty good way of going about it. I didn't like Tears of the Kingdom and how open-ended that game was- but here, I can see it working out just fine without sacrificing what made the 2D Zelda games so great in the first place. It seems like the items are actually limited as to how many we can place- and that we'll upgrade the ability to summon or place more as the game goes on.

The only thing I'm not completely sold on as of yet is how grating combat will end up getting with summoning enemies to fight for you. I could see it becoming sort of annoying if the game ends up either forcing you to stock up on the enemies themselves, or if the game requires you to constantly open a scroll menu like the items for fuse in TotK. Seems like it'll become less of a neat gimmick and more of a hassle in the later hours of the game.

@VoidofLight In terms of combat, she basically had a cannon on her head at one point in the trailer. I suspect some things you collect over time will make the standard enemies easy enough/not-annoying to deal with. I would guess/hope there will be some quick-select buttons for your favorite items as in other Zelda games and you will only have to dig in the menus when you run into puzzles or new enemy types where you need different items. It feels to me like they are simultaneously going back to Zelda roots (needing certain types of items to progress) while also using some of the crazy open-endedness of TotK. It's definitely an experiment, but I suspect it will have Nintendo polish so I'm pretty optimistic.

I'm also personally in the camp where I would have taken almost anything for a Zelda-focused Zelda game. 😆 I had assumed they would give her a staff instead of a sword... this just isn't quite what I expected she would do with the staff but I'm not against it.

Looking at the trailer, it seems like you don't need to stockpile echoes like you would with zonai or fusable items in TotK. Once you learn an echo, it's yours to keep, and the only limit seems to be how many triangles you have available to spawn echoes into the overworld. I'm surprised it took me this long to notice there was a limit, but it gives me a bit more confidence that EoW's puzzle design will be a step up from TotK's.
