This has happened twice now: I out the switch to sleep and when I wake it up, the console says to close a game before removing it. The game is still in the system, but the system can't detect it, I have to eject and put it back in.
Is my switch dying?

@Trajan So what it sounds like to me is that the card is simply coming loose in the console. You said it happened twice, it that means it not a big problem, so there is probably nothing to worry about, but have you try'd putting other games in and see how often this issue happens.

I had something similar before and basically that means the cartridge reader is going busted. In a little while it won't be about sometimes but allways and for all cartridges. It needs to get a new one unfortunately.
Both the game cartridge and the Switch's cartridge reader are prone to damage if a game was ever removed while still running. Otherwise it's probably just normal wear and tear. Nothing human-made lasts forever without requiring some degree of maintenance or replacement.
This is happening to me too lately. Only happens after I wake the switch up after sleep. A reddit post suggested that this is a firmware related issue. So we will just have to wait till they fix it.
This just happened to me and I really hope the reader is going busted I got my first physical game last week so it hasn't had any other cartridge in it since I brought it
Well, now it's revived. And it's fitting because it's probably applying to more and more people. My launch Switch is starting to do this to me every couple weeks or so.
I second (third?) that this might be a software bug. I just experienced this with Pokemon Shield the other day; my V2 Switch hadn't been undocked or moved since the session before, so the cart hadn't been removed or knocked around. A restart solved my problem.

Happened to me as well...
It's like back in the old days when we blew dust particles out of the cartridge slot.
I don't think it's serious. Eject and put it back in.
Had similar issue once with my brother's new Animal Cross Nintendo Switch that is 4-5 months old with copy of Pokémon Sword I bought from person where after waking up it showed in menu that game was not inserted, then I just reinserted the game and it worked fine again.

Im having this issue too, i left a new game i bought for my switch and played it a while and i didn't use my switch probably more than 3 days and when i finally use it today on the menu screen right next to the game's name it indicates that the game card is not inserted, it has been fix by putting it out and in again, so is this just a normal bug? I've been taking care of my switch since i bought it
I actually had to get my V1 Switch sent in about 2 years ago since it could hardly even play games from the card reader. I could maybe get about 20 minutes of usage before it said that it was ejected, and I would lose my progress in whatever I was playing.
Fortunately, the repair team made it better but about 2 or 3 times since I've had it happen again. It's not a huge deal since it isn't anywhere near as bad as it used to be, but it's still a little annoying.
