So who's going to try and identify every character in front of the burning Smash symbol? XD
Thing I wonder about the SSB4/5 debate.....why did Nintendo not just say it was Smash 4 with extra stuff? I think a lot of people might be angry if they confirm is SSB4+ at E3 while thinking it was SSB5.
Unless, maybe the game will go down a Splatoon route of regular free and paid content? You release it with enough to go on with and you add the rest over the next 2 or so years. Its been happening to many others, ARMs, BOTW, the Warrior Nintendo Games, Pokken Tournament, Xenoblade 2, even the next Kirby game is getting regular free new content coming. Smash games in the past have taken so long to be made, so maybe they'll take this path to get the game out faster. SSB4 started it with its DLC, maybe SSB5 will evolve it further.
Sure it might seem insane it would be coming out this year....but then if you told anyone in 2016 that 2017 will feature a brand new main Zelda, Main Mario and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 as well as the ability to take those games with you outside, would they believe us? XD
"We're currently at a stage where we've still only announced the title, but are silently working away on production day to day. Please wait until such a time that we may make details of the game's contents and release public!!"
Still plenty of question marks. My guess is it's going to be more than "just a port". I think they're going to try and push for it to have something of its own identity, and feel notably 'up to date' (Inklings and BotW Link will help with that). However, I don't think we're going to be able to argue that it it definitively "not a port" either. There's simply too much content and fine tuning across the two previous versions to throw it all away and start again; that game was already an elegant mechanical balance between Melee and Brawl. It was such a definitive game in its own right that the Switch version would be better served by building on it than scrapping it.
People are going to argue about the word "port" a lot. But we're getting Smash for Switch and (short of a catastrophe) it's going be great.
If it is a 'Deluxe port', I hope that they give it the full Deluxe treatment (à la Mario Kart 8) and add something akin to the Subspace Emissary to the game, as well as new characters etc. ..Smash games aren't all that different to one another (compared to other series) - so I'm expecting more of a refined experience than a total overhaul - and adding a Subspace Emissary (or similar) could be just the ticket!

There you have it. Metal Mario, Alm, Hades, J-Pop Chrom, and The Badge Arcade Bunny confirmed.

@Maxz Probably won't be much different to folks claiming Splatoon 2 to just be "Splatoon 1.5". Speaking of, it's obvious the whole scuffle in the white void was meant to evoke the announcement trailer for the first Splatoon. How far it's come in such little time...
Meanwhile, Kirby fans are distracted trying to get their favourite characters in Star Allies rather than Smash.

I was originally in the boat thinking that this would mostly only be a port, but if you look in the bottom right corner of the end card at the end if the trailer, you can see the words “Original Game”. Perhaps this really is Smash 5

I don't think that means that this is an original game. It likely refers to "the original version of this game" is copyright nintendo/HAL, while this iteration is strictly Nintendo alone.
If this is a port I will be even more mad than ever, because Nintendo totally mislead us if that is the case. No need for the vagueness unless this is a new game.
Actually, I don't see why I would. I got bored with Super Smash Bros for Wii U very shortly after buying it. I spent a fortune on that game only to not really have much interest in actually playing it. I unlocked the characters and that was pretty much it.
I begrudgingly double-dipped on Mario Kart 8 because I KNEW that I would have a lot of fun with playing it online. Super Smash Bros. For Wii U/3DS has no such appeal to me.
@AlternateButtons You thought everyone was on the same page? I have been very vocal about wanting a Super Smash Bros. SEQUEL instead of a PORT for a very long time, and have never said otherwise.
There is no "all of the sudden people think it would be a bad thing". I have always thought this.
Communities are never going to be on the same page. We are individuals. We all have our own opinions. Before you so condescendingly tell people to grow up, you might want to think about that.
