More than likely this is just a port of the Wii U and 3DS games combined together with some extra payed DLC stages and Characters. Either way I will still be skipping this game all together because I don't care for the Smash Bros games. What I want is a New 2D Mario Platformer for the Switch.
I've got an example that confirms Smash could still be an enhanced port. Switch has a few Wii U ports already out (MK8 Deluxe, Pokken DX, Bayonetta 1+2).
Bayonetta 1+2 has copyright 2014-2018 (2014 is when the Wii U version came out)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Pokken DX however has a copyright of 2017 (not 2014-2017 for MK8 Deluxe and 2016-2017 for Pokken DX)
So Smash can still be a deluxe edition where Inklings are extra characters and BotW Link either being an extra character or a Link alternate outfit (think Alph).
It'll be built on 4 regardless. Whether or not it's a "port" was always going to come down to content and marketing. An enhanced port at some point becomes a new release, I think this will possibly push the limits of these definitions
Some Aussie musics: King Gizz, TFS, Genesis Owusu
"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"
@Meowpheel I see where you're coming from, but at the same time... it's fire. It's generic enough that it could just as easily not mean anything at all.
Currently procrastinating on: implementing virtual memory and synchronization.
Currently distracted with: Mario Tennis Aces
I don't see why a lot of people dislike the idea of a port. I personally don't see the advantage of a new game.
If they enhance the port, I think that's the best idea. We have all the characters already, give us more custom moves, more stages, subspace, more additional characters, and more patches to better balance the game... and nerf Bayonetta.
They could even just update the models a bit, fix characters that ended up just being copycats. They could make dark pit actually different, and give toon link moves from his actual games, and a unique final smash!
I'd prefer if they just kept porting smash 4 and enhancing the game rather than creating a brand new game with half the features of the old games and some new junk no one cares about (replacing subspace with smash tour for example). And get online to run smoother!
@khaosklub I dunno. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I like the idea of ditching a bunch of characters. Rethink Mario's and Link's movesets, etc. Start from scratch. Keep it small. I'm fine with no more than 30 characters. More isn't always better IMO.
@Judi They used fire as a central motif for the logos in smash 4, specially to diferentiate the different versions of the game (with each logo having fire that matches the main color of the console they're on). Even the font in the title is the same.
Every other game in the series has distinctively different logos.
But you're right, it could very well mean nothing.
I'm in the camp that this is a brand new entry of the Smash series and is Smash 6(By the way, Sakurai considers Smash 3DS "Smash 4" and the Wii U game "Smash 5" I'll dig up the interview when I have some time.
If this was just a dolled-up port with the Inklings added in, why not do the trailer in the style of Smash 4's newcomer trailers? Why not show gameplay?
I think this is Smash 6, and for all we know, there is some new gameplay mechanic that they do not want to show off yet.
If this is just another port, why not show off more?
One other thing, why is the website replaced with a link to Smash 3DS/Wii U's site on the bottom? If this is an enhanced port, why replace the website?
Hyrule Warriors has a link on the website for the Wii U version that openly states there is a Switch Port coming in 2018, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker's website has a notice that the game is coming to the Nintendo Switch and 3DS in 2018, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze also has a notice that its coming to the Switch in May of 2018.
So, why is Smash Bros the only one with a brand new website? All these other Wii U ports that are coming to the Switch all have their Wii U pages up, with a notice somewhere on the page that says its coming to the Switch.
Why? Because this is the real deal. This is the newest entry in the Smash Bros series.
@Octane
Why isn't more always better? They could always just refine the movesets, it's not like those can't be changed, nor can custom moves not be added. I'd personally like them to rework custom moves to make them more viable and instead of being alternate specs of current moves for the most part, be more like mega man's alternate moves and be pretty much new moves altogether!
I'd rather see them continuously port smash 4, and rework the characters, making them more unique. We get new games, we get 30 characters, and 6 of them end up dittos. I'd prefer instead of them rebuilding the almost identical engine from the ground up again, make those dittos more unique, give characters like toon link and gannondorf more unique character specific attacks, and bring back all the legacy characters.
@Caryslan
I mean, you kinda answered yourself in that Sakurai considers Smash U to be Smash 5, when everyone else considers it smash 4 on the wiiU. If this is considered Smash 6, it could very well be an enhanced port with significant content added in.
