Nice to hear they're replacing it. Good luck with the new one.
Cheers!
@Heavyarms55
Yeah, no idea ... I'm guessing it was most likely just the dock, though, but without them disclosing more information, I have no way of telling. But hey, getting a new one anyway, so might just as well enjoy it.
turns out it was the dock all along, getting all iffy with signal processing and what not.
It's all working as intended now, and so nice on a new TV to go with it.
@PolarExperience the thing is that it seems weird for it to be the dock because I cant even change in handheld mode. Might go back to the store and try to get a new switch or something..
Actually, it's not weird at all for the dock to be at fault. That's exactly what was wrong with my brand new package, eventhough I was able to force it two-three times to get those available resolutions until it completely failed on me.
From my gathering, all consoles are shipped as Auto/480p presets until they're docked and gather available resolutions on endpoint device. If the dock is faulty, the console has no way of setting desired output.
One thing to rule out before opting for a new dock is to hook it up to a different TV (the newer, the better) and/or use a different HDMI cable (those can be DOA as well, but not as likely).
Yes, it's generally a good idea to factory reset it. I'm glad it was able to pull the data and "unlock" the resolutions for you.
btw. in case it defaults back to 480p or you just don't get more than 480p output on your screen, it's very likely a bad dock, so a replacement would be in order.
@Limited , @Helle, @PolarExperience do you guys find a solution? I'm desperate..
Let me brief you my story.. before, my switch showed all the options.? automatic, 480, 720 and 1080... but i switched between all of them and no result.. always 480.. so, i did a factory reset (without deleting my saves) now, im updated in firmware, but i have only 480.. again, i'am desperate, what can i do? thank you guys!!
Well, in my case it was a faulty dock, and by reading about your issue(s) it sounds almost identical to the problems I had.
... a full factory hard reset was what helped once and I thought that was my ticket out, but it turned out I was just lucky in terms of the dock wanting to work then, hehe. (and I thought it was the HDMI cable, so I bought a premium one - didn't help, but I'm glad I bought it anyway)
Things to try:
try a hard factory reset (if you don't have your saves in the cloud, be aware you will lose them)
try all available HDMI ports on your TV or monitor
try a different TV/monitor
try a different HDMI cable (first on current input devices, then other ones)
if you know someone that owns a Switch, try their dock (on fresh resets)
If all fails, only then should you consider the console itself being at fault.
@Limited man, thank you very much for your answer!!! The only things i've tried so far, I switched the HDMI and the port on my TV (a very new Samsung model 4K if I'm not wrong), without success.. this wknd I might try at a friend's TV and dock.. if does not work, i really dunno.. let's hope!! again, I'm desperate..
I have the same problem i know this is a older topic but can you guys please help me... my switch is on version 8.0.1 the only difference with my problem is that it showed 480p 720p and 1080p but even if i selected 720p or 1080p it would still look like 480p so then i decided to try and reset the console but keep saves so i did that and i turned on the console, went to settings and TV settings and when i tapped TV resolution this time it only showed auto or 480p so resetting it made it worse.
My son is having the same issue. We literally purchased his last night. it won't display in 1080p. Stuck on 480p. Sounds like the same exact thing you went through. He is so upset. He was so excited to finally get the switch. So, I guess we are going to exchange it and see if he got a faulty dock. Is it really that random though? If we take it back to the same store and exchange it what are the chances of him getting another dock that is faulty? My TV's are both smart TVs. They aren't the newest but they aren't that old either. We tried it on both Smart TVs that we have. Same thing happened. Nintendo needs to fix this glitch. These systems are not cheap. To get it home and it not work as intended is ridiculous. Without it working and being able to display on the TV in 1080p he might as well have bought an extra large DS. Because that is all it will be good for is to use as a hand held game. Defeats the purpose of what the switch is supposed to be.
