At the end of the Sonic panel during this year's SXSW Gaming Expo, a teaser for a new Sonic racing game was shown.

Aaron Webber also stated that it is not a sequel to any other game that they have released in the past. This seems to confirm the rumor that Sumo Digital is working on a Sonic-exclusive racing game that isn't a crossover with other SEGA franchises.

Hopefully there will be more info soon.

Not as good as Mario kart (sorry sonic, you'll never be as good as the plumber!) But I'm sure it will (hopefully) be good.

I am a Big Nintendo fan and spend much of my freetime playing Mario, Zelda and more! My other hobby is my Gaming website, GamingTelescope https://gamingtelescope.blogspot.com/ and looking at Gaming News on NintendoLife!

Ugh, can we please get a racing game that isn't a kart racer or car sim? The racing genre is flooded with those kinds of games and they all feel really similar. Wish they'd bring back Riders instead, that was actually really unique and fun. Especially the first one where it wasn't bogged down by pace breaking gravity gimmicks or motion controls.

New new crazy taxi will be great

I will miss Nights and Golden Axe content, but I won't miss other franchises because I'm not a big fan of them. I am happy that there will be more Sonic content and Green Hill must be included, it is a must. But I am very sorry for Nights and Golden axe.

Personally I don't understand why Sega don't give the original Sonic R another go, the original was hampered by the technology of the era but was pretty fun. Sonic doesn't need a car... he runs (depending on the comic/cartoon/game) faster than any car & I could easily see a new Sonic R being Sega's cheezy, fun new version of Wipeout/Fast RMX.

Instead, it appears we'll be getting Burnout Sonic Edition... inwhich the most burning question is how do they fit a cartoony spiked hedgehog into a realistic car? Does Sonic shave his back & grow a foot taller overnight?

To be fair, it made sense in the All-Stars Racing games because the other Sega characters can't run as fast as Sonic and friends, and having them running would look silly anyway. Plus, most of the Sonic characters can't really fly for the flight sections of Racing Transformed.

@OdnetninAges That's true, though Sega has in the past made racing games featuring the Sonic cast in cars without such an excuse - Sonic Drift 1 & 2 for the Megadrive/Genesis for example. Another thought would be for Sonic & friends to be on foot & the Golden Axe crew can just ride in mini Fzero cars. Problem, fixed.

I really enjoyed Racing Transformed on Wii U.The single player career mode was great with a lot of variety and the CPU gave you a good challenge without ever feeling like they were rubber banding. One thing I didn't like about it though was it ran at 30fps. After playing MK8 it was hard to go back to Transformed as the reduced framerate was very noticeable.I worry that may be the case with Team Sonic Racing too,it'll be 60fps on PS4/One and 30fps on Switch . I hope I'm wrong but I'll be surprised if I am.

I never played the previous games, but this seems to imply that it's like the previous games except without characters from other series.

Considering how people got annoyed at Mario Kart 8's roster because it didn't have half a dozen generic Mario enemies playable or whatever, taking away EVERY SINGLE SEGA FRANCHISE THAT ISN'T SONIC WHILE SEGA ALSO REFUSES TO MAKE NEW GAMES BASED OFF OF MOST OF THEIR FRANCHISES seems like a mistake.

I want to believe it will be good, but I'm pretty skeptical...

The first All-Star Racing was a pretty good-to-great kart racer with some really nice track designs to go with some really lame tracks, bad weapon system, and overall lack of refinement. Transformed I thought was pretty bad. Offers plenty of compelling spectacle at first, but none of the racing system held up for me the more I played. The poorly designed singleplayer challenges and unlock system are pretty dull as well. Even the tracks I thought had a readability problem... Pretty much an unfortunately obtuse arcade racer in my mind.

And here, this game even seems to lack the previous ambition, which seems a dire consequence... Though I suppose compared to Transformed this project could benefit from a redefined focus on the core elements and track design.

That said, something they really need to figure out is if they want to be an arcade racer or kart racer, because in the past they incorporate elements of kart racing like items, but much of the track design in Transformed is in the arcade mold of long bends and maintaining speed. Whereas a good kart racer should have more of a puzzle-like element to it's racing lines with more options and a focus on the interplay of item use opportunity and consequence with building speed/continually discovering the quickest path. Then the overall track list should sort of fulfill the entire spectrum rather than share a particular goal or ethos or composition.

I appreciate the intent of the Transformed arcade design, but I don't think it jives with the kart elements on many of the tracks, where there is generally little risk of using items among obvious and somewhat constrictive racing lines. This is only exacerbated by the transforming mechanics, resulting in a needlessly haphazard racing game masquerading as an all-inviting experience rather than catering to an audience/identity.

Ranting about it now, I think I wish they had just embraced the arcade racing backbone entirely and ditched all the kart-related concepts, especially the items. It could have been a great arcade racer to me with a more pure focus, no doubt.

2 questions:

1: Is there enough content for single-players like myself?
2: How stable is it? Sonic allstar racing on the Wii u crashed 1 or 2 times on me (and after that I stopped playing. I plan to pick it up again someday. I barely played it so far, but liked what I saw). On a sidenote: Sonic Lost worlds crashed again and again on me. Almost finished it, but stopped because of the crashing. I either had a very bad Wii u (its a real crasher) or its all because the harddrive with y-cable. It should technically work, but maybe not good enough.

Buizel

@Henmii I also had crashing on the Wii U, but have never experienced this in any game on the Switch. It might have been a wii u specific problem.

As for single player content... I think there's more than enough for a game of the genre (I've not yet finished the single player content but there appears to be a much as previous Sumo Digital Sega racing games).

I enjoyed Sonic & All-stars Racing Transformed more than Mario Kart 8, which only was better regarding frame rate in my opinion. This sequel is more story-focused and thus without other franchises content but it's great fun too.

Henmii

@Buizel,

So you recommend it for a singleplayer like me? I won't touch the multiplayer.

Henmii

Buizel

@Henmii it depends what you're after really. I think the game is quite fun and there's a fair amount of content, but I was a little disappointed overall. I don't think it's as good as Sonic All-stars Transformed, and it certainly isn't as good as Mario Kart 8. Maybe worth seeing how Crash turns out (assuming you're just after a mascot racer) ?

At least 2'8".

Henmii

@Buizel,

I definitely buy Crash. Sonic is a maybe, but thanks for the answer.

I might grab this one down the line, but I don't like the team aspect to it, and I greatly dislike that it's mostly Sonic characters this time around, since the "Sega All-Stars" really made a great variety of stages and characters. I like Sonic, but I never felt he could carry his own racing franchise...
