The game is out! And yet Best Buy wasn't able to get it to me on release day (yet again). That's OK- I'll just play more Monster Hunter XX in the meantime.

So how is it people? It looks incredible and I cannot wait... so jealous of you guys already playing it. Started thinking about buying it digitally so I could play it right away and maybe even buying all my physical games digitally so I could have them all on the system without needing to swap cartridges but that would get really expensive over the course of the next five years... buying games both digitally and physically. Having MHXX digitally is so convenient though. I love it.

@Spoony_Tech
Yes, you are probably right. If there's one person who can burn through games quicker than I can though, it's my longtime hunting partner TeeJay. That guy kills games left and right. Makes me look like a part timer

@Maxz When I said 'first-party' game I was referring to the fact it had Mario as the main character.

...That's not what a first party game is. A first party game is a game developed and/or published by a first party. This game is, as I said, a third party game with licensed characters. Therefore it cannot be ported 'on a whim' to other consoles - because of licensing. It's still not first party. A first party game is not 'a game with Mario in it', or any other character. It is unrelated to characters. It is a very clearly definined term, and not 'open to interpretation' or 'feeling'.

You said the game would achieve 8/10 "at most". The game averages 8.5/10, which is far enough above your absolute maximum prediction to be non-trivial. You did not account for this. There are only two possible points between 8 and 10. The 0.5 accounts for 25% of this interval. If we acknowledge the fact that no game ever gets an average score of a full 10, this grows even larger.

You said people were "glazing over" the fact that there was a "good chance of it being the worst received first-party Switch game this year". As it stands, it would be one of the very best received, and the only one of the Top 3 that was developed exclusively for the system. You didn't say this, I did. I said it because in constrast to your gloomy premonitions, Mario + Rabbids is the best reviewed full retail title on the Switch which isn't a port of a Wii U game. Of all time. This is interesting in its own right, and worth mentioning.

People weren't "glazing over" anything. They were waiting for more information in order to come to a better informed opinion, rather than assuming the role of prophet based on a few leaked screenshots and carping at anyone who would suggest they were 'jumping the gun' in doing so.

You're welcome to your own opinions on the game, but when you start talking about the game being "the worst received Switch game this year", you're throwing your hat into a rather bigger ring. And the hat is still sitting there, looking rather damp and disheveled, waiting for you to pick it up.

You explicitly said the game "isn't going to be very good" ("unless Ubisoft are intentionally gaslighting us by leaking misleading information in order to manage expectations" - which they weren't). You're welcome to play the game and come to that opinion yourself. But in terms of how well the game is received, it seems a lot of critics would disagree with you, I guess.

Anyone downloaded the DLC or used an Amiibo for this like to share their opinions?
I've got 20+ Amiibo and have somehow contrived to not have any Mario characters, not on purpose.
With SNES mini out next month and Ultra S&M after that, then Odyssey after that I'm considering robbing a bank or maybe launching a kickstarter (which is similar).

@Fandabidozi I've used 3 amiibo with the game and don't worry, you're not missing anything. Each amiibo unlocks a unique weapon for their respective character. Although the weapon stats were slightly higher than what I already had , by the end of world 1 they had been outclassed by base game weapons unlocked through play.

I didn't bother with the pixelpack dlc. Bizarrely the code isn't redeemable on the eshop and must be redeemed on Ubisofts site by giving them your email, upon which they then send you an eshop code (and incessant marketing spam)

Game itself is top tier , grade A , summa cum laude brilliant!

@otterskateboard
It's a shame the amiibo weapons couldn't be a pallet swap for whatever you've got.
If I finish most of the game then I'll buy the DLC. Looks like it includes an extra ice themed world.
Hopefully M+R 2 is on the cards and we get Birdo as a playable character (and Amiibo)!

I'm going to buy this later tonight. I was going to wait a couple of months until I get back from my trip to Scotland but that's just daft,I've still got 11 days before I leave . M&R tonight and Zed Blade tomorrow and possibly next week's Neo Geo game depending on what it is, then that will be my lot.

@JaxonH I'm in digital only land. The tiny extra cost beats never losing or breaking a game. Cost is also easily compensated for ever since my youngest stopped structurally pooping his pants.

I've done a few battles now and already love this game. I'll be buying the dlc as I'll be wanting more of this for a long time.

To those buying this, I'm about 5 hours in with the first world beat and I'm noticing some freezes at times. May just be on my end, but better to give a heads-up.

A question for those who might know...:

If I buy this game digital on the European eShop, it will show as purchased in my Japanese account (which is my main account) when the game finally releases in Japan.

My question is, if then (after the games releases in Japan) I delete the European version, can I re-download from the Japanese eShop? Or the game is locked to the eShop (and user) it was originally purchased in?

The thing is that I want the game now for me, but my kids don't understand English, so when the game releases in Japan, I would like to get it from the Japanese eShop so I can use the game in Japanese...

This is all very confusing, but if someone can show some light I'll be eternally grateful!!!!!!

@otterskateboard Thankfully not, and the frame-drops didn't even irk me, but the freezes seem out of place, for an otherwise well-done and polished product. I hope they'll fix those soon.

@Spanjard You mean that day one patch? Or did an update come out today? Once I put the game in and started my Switch, it did update it, but I've only really started playing afterwards, so the update didn't do anything for the freezes, unless there's another I'm unaware of.

Show me a UBISoft game that doesn't freeze on a Nintendo system and then we can talk.

I'll be picking this up later today. Was busy yesterday and didn't have the time. I need a game I can beat and doesn't take too long.

It's a very charming game, but the soundtrack is disappointing me. I feel like kirkhope has lost the magic that made me fall in love with his work in the N64 and even early 360 Era. Now, I think David wise has supplanted him as my all time favorite composer, as far as western people go

Nicolai

@Operative2-0 Yeah, I remember people saying that with Yooka Laylee. Personally, I never understood why Kirkhope is so popular, but lately even fans of him seem to always be pleased at the announcement of him working on a game, but disappointed when they hear the result.

I have put about 3 hours into the game and the best way to describe it is a silly, corny version of Xcom. I'm a big Xcom fan so for me I'm really enjoying it. Though I would have just preferred ... you know... Xcom 2 on Switch. Just saying. But still its a pretty good game.

@maruse This is a difficult question, and one I don't 100% know the answer to, but I've done some research on similar cases which might provide some context.

Firstly, it should be pointed out that games which receive a global release almost invariably get the same version on each of the eShops. So you can change language at will, and if you purchase a game on one eShop, it should register as 'purchased' on all of them. Essentially, wherever you download it, you're getting the same game.

Of course, Mario + Rabbids isn't getting a simultaneous global release, and so we have to shift our expectations. Unlike most games I'm aware of, it's being released in Japan after most of the rest of the world, but because I don't know many other titles like this, I'm going to be comparing it to Puyo Puyo Tetris, which was released in Japan first, and then in English later.

In this case, the two versions were entirely separate; you could download the English version from the EUR eShop, and download the Japanese version from the JPN eShop, and both versions would sit on your device independently (I'm pretty sure about this). Essentially they were treated as different games, so if you wanted the option of playing in two languages, you had to buy two titles (with different save data) separately. This is in contrast to something like Zelda, where all languages came bundled in one version, and you could freely switch between them.

If M+R follows this model, you will have to buy the Japanese version again from scratch, which is unfortunate.

However, what is worth noting is that current version of M+R has just received a Day 1 update, which has patched Simplified Chinese (and I think Russian) into the game. This is the first instance I know of extra languages being added to a complete game post-release, so there may be a chance that Japanese will follow suit.

So it's hard to say. Japanese maybe patched into the existing version when it is released in the country, or there may be a new, separate Japanese only version, which is treated as a separate game.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but there's no consistent approach to how different languages are implemented when games receive a delayed release in another country, so it's difficult to know. It might be wiser to wait and see, but I suppose it depends on how much you yourself want to play the game right now.

@Maxz Let me tell you, it's been a lot of fun reading through this entire thread today.

Stage One: LOLZ there is no way this is real, look at the BS these leakers are trying to peddle. I'm so happy that now they will be revealed as the scam artists they are.

Stage Two: OMFG I can't believe Nintendo would let their classic characters be tainted with this shovelware! Lol more crap for the Switch, this is gonna end up being the worst first party game ever. Mario does not use laser cannons! $&**/> you Ubisoft, you have killed the Switch.

Stage Three: I can't believe this is real, but it still looks like garbage. Those environments look terrible, obvious shovelware from Ubisoft.

Stage Four: huh, it looks better than I thought, but nobody likes turn-based strategy anyway, this is gonna bomb so hard.

Stage Five: wait, this is getting positive word of mouth?

Stage Six: OMG THIS LOOKS GREAT!!

Stage Seven: Game of the Year! Unanimous praise! Everybody wants this! Thank you Ubisoft!!
