@Dark_Magician and I think Mario Kart Ultimate would not resonate well with fans with a title like that. At least, I would think it would be ripping off Smash Bros’ Title.

Honestly, I just want a story mode lol

Not really a story mode but a mission mode will be great.

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

1. Super Mario Odyssey
2. Super Mario Sunshine
3. Super Mario 64

That's how I'd rank the "open" style 3D Marios. I don't know about the other games. I just know they're all significantly below 64 because I don't enjoy the linear level style as much.

I am a Rare fan and even for me Diddy Kong Racing was much more than I expected, with an engaging story mode, lots of secrets, challenges and stunning graphics. I want a remake so much.

Super Mario 64 - My very first 3D game, it's still probably the most fun Mario title to speed through in replays. Nintendo had a marvelous start to 3D gameplay, but it's flaws are real. Certain pace breaking things (having to collect the stars one at a time notably), poor boss design, basic enemies and a wonky camera leave it at the bottom of the list.

3D Land - The fact that this game is last on the list is more a testament to how good 3D Mario games are than any slight against it. It's a bit too nostalgia banking and not quite ambitious enough, but it's fun all the way through. And there is so much content, I'm pretty sure it has the most levels of any Mario game, there had to be close to 100 at least. I'm certainly hoping they'll resurrect the best of them for a 3D World port.

But that brings it to the cons. While basically every level is good, none stand out as utterly memorable. There's a significant lack of variety in power-ups (though the helicopter box and boomerang flower both reappeared in later titles, so kudos for quality), so most levels are designed around Tanooki suit. The moveset is nerfed, and not quite as satisfying as most other titles. In general, it's down near the bottom, even as a 3DS must play.

Super Mario Sunshine - Yeah, we all know this game is flawed. But it's high quality and fun nonetheless. The levels are better designed than 64, FLUDD offers fun, if odd, new gameplay mechanics, and the story is actually pretty fun.

But the big issue with the game (and no it's not Plinko or the river level exactly), is it's needlessly restrictive. So many shines should have been available at any time, letting people explore levels as they want. While some make sense to be limited, many could have been available any time with no issue. And on top of that, the game doesn't respect player's time, making repeating tasks far too common. Still, it's a fun game, and incredibly unique.

Super Mario 64 DS - Part remake, part sequel, this game is just plain weird. But with it fixing many of 64's flaws (even while introducing a few of its own, such as having to use a d-pad for a 3D game), a bunch of extra and reworked content, new playable characters, better bosses and tons of surprisingly fun multiplayer minigames, I'd consider it the better way to play. If someone manages to get the touchscreen analog control mapped to a controller and upscaled it it would probably be the way to play.

Super Mario Galaxy - A true masterpiece, but I'd say everything from this point on could be called that. It was fantastic in every respect, sound, stage design, control, etc. Also it has the best story in any Mario game, bar none.

3D World - This game is the best multiplayer experience I've ever had, bar none. I played the whole game with 2-4 players, and it was incredibly gripping. Wonderful stages actually embraced the idea of multiplayer. I'm sure it wouldn't hold up as well in single player, but I can't fault it for that. And it's the only game besides 64 DS to have unique playable characters, which let you pick your playstyle or mix things up. The game feels fresh even today.

Super Mario Odyssey - I still go back to this game and just have pure fun running around aimlessly. Mario has never felt so good to control, and that counts for so much. Add in a decent story, wonderful character designs and worlds, and the best implementation of the sandbox style of Mario games and you have a game that I'll probably replay time and again for the rest of my life.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - The story might not be as good as Galaxy's, and it wasn't that same stunning newness to play the first time. But going back to it it's clear this game has the best level design in any Mario game, period, while continuing on with Galaxy's other high bars.. And in the end, that's what pulls it above the other games on this list.

@link3710 I agree with every single one! I haven't play 3D Land because I got my 3DS in 2012 and picked up Mario Kart 7....

@Apportal_SMM2 I agree. They will do it at some point though. Or just port all the Mariokarts ever for 10 bucks each. I'm bored of Mariokart 8 Deluxe. woot it's Mariokart 8 again. What tracks do you want remade in the retro cup guys?

Not ranking 3D Land and 3D World. Whether or not they "count" as "true 3D games" doesn't really matter IMO. What matters is that they share fundamental design elements with the 2D Mario games that make them quite unpleasant for me to play, so I don't ever really plan on going through either in full.

5. Super Mario Galaxy 2- Take Mario Galaxy and rip all the charm and consistent theming out, and it just feels really lifeless and unmemorable despite very well designed levels.

4. Super Mario Sunshine- The only rushed 3D Mario, and it shows. The padding, the wonky physics engine, it really shows. But the mechanics are brilliant, and the design is quite good. Also, the water looks better than some of today's games.

3. Super Mario 64- This game was my childhood, and I love it for that. I even liked the DS remake. It has a sort of cryptic element to it that I love about older games. With that said, I think the team has gotten significantly better with game design in the days since

2. Super Mario Odyssey- Honestly, this is the love child of SM64 and Galaxy in my mind. The linear portions use the brilliant level design of Galaxy and Galaxy 2, while the open areas test your platforming prowess like SM64. It's a wonderful game, and a contender for some of the best bosses in the series. My main complaint is that they don't let you replay story missions, which is just silly to me, since some of those were really fun.

1. Super Mario Galaxy- I could easily argue for this being the greatest game ever created. I love the level design, I love the theming, I love the variety, I love the controls. I honestly prefer to replay Galaxy than to play Galaxy 2. Also THE MUSIC IS AMAZING.

@Dark_Magician I would like them to remake all the circuits in that Mario Kart Ultimate. It's not that difficult, 3DS and Wii U circuits still look good and Mario Kart Wii proved how easy is to update the SNES/GBA circuits with simple graphics. The N64 and DS circuits would look great with a fresh lick of paint. GameCube and Wii circuits shouldn't need much work either.

@Apportal I actually want 3D World on Switch more than the other 3D Mario games. I never got the chance to play it. Looks like I'm missing out on a really awesome co op adventure. I passed on NSMBU Deluxe because I wanted something fresh. I hope it comes to Switch later this year.

1. Super Mario Sunshine
Out of every mario game, this is the one I go back to and replay the most. I love the tropical theme, and even though the whole game keeps that tropical resort theme, each level still feels unique. It also easily has the best hub world. Seeing the sunlight slowly expand with each shine you get is extremely satisfying and rewarding. The music is catchy, FLUDD is a ton of fun to use, and the FLUDD-less levels add some nice variety and challenge.

2. Super Mario Odyssey
This game is just pure fun. I was happy the entire time I played it. This is the best mario has ever controlled and it's extremely satisfying to get to hard to reach areas by jumping on Cappy. Capturing enemies also prevents the gameplay from getting too stale. The main downside is I don't think it has as much replayability as some of the other 3D Marios.

3. Super Mario Galaxy
The levels from both Mario Galaxy games are so well designed. Tons of creativity went into creating these games. The original Galaxy gets a few extra points for having a better story and a more interesting hub world.

4. Super Mario Galaxy 2
Like the original, a ton of fun and also adds plenty of new ideas to prevent it from feeling like it's just rehashed levels from the original.

5. Super Mario 64
Similar to Sunshine it also has a very fun and memorable hub world. It's still incredibly fun to play today, but there are some areas where it shows it's age. A solid HD remake would do it well.

6. Super Mario 3D World
It's a good game. I think it did a pretty good job at making each level feel unique, and the multiplayer is pretty entertaining. I usually start to get bored after playing for too long though, so I have a hard time placing it higher on the list.

7. Super Mario 3D Land
Easily the worst of them all. Not a bad game, but it's competing with the best of the best. I do get the desire to go back and play this game sometimes, but every time I do I get bored after a couple levels and put it down. I think too many of the levels blend together. 3D World did a much better job at adding new ideas as you play to keep the gameplay fresh.

1. Mario Sunshine - Favorite use of setting, loved the gameplay, experimental like most gamecube games of the time. I replay this one the most since I love 100%'ing it. Personally strongly disagree that it "aged terribly" aside from the very very few impossible to find blue coins and the ONE level out of all the others that wasn't designed well.

2. Mario Odyssey - Best playing Mario game hands down, I just dont know if its above Sunshine for me.

3. Mario 64 DS - I found a way to play it in analog, if not id put it lower. Has some of that Mario 64 stank but there is still a lot of inclusions and improvements.

4. Mario 3D World - Best multiplayer level based Mario.

5. Mario Galaxy & 2 - Great games, just kinda bored me. I like 2 a little better tho, seemed more focused on being what it actually is, a level based Mario game.

6. Mario 3D Land - Great game, it was the most forgettable game for me and I cant say id ever want to replay it anytime soon.

7. Mario 64 - I play this one the least now a days. Aged kinda poorly imo, you can definitely see where the next 3d platformers learned and improved on.

Im not a big level based Mario fan tho so my favorites of all time are going to be the sandbox mario games like Odyssey and Sunshine.

@Ardisan What are the worlds of Super Mario Sunshine that you like the most and the least?

@Cynas I agree with most of you points, that is a very good summary.

@BlueOcean Most favorite world is a hard question but I think I like Pianta Village the most? Least would probably be Corona Mountain.
I noticed I said level on my previous comment but I meant shines, and my least favorite shines are Pachinko Game and Father and Son Shine , so its actually 2/120 shines that I didn't enjoy.
My issue with the Pachinko level is that its very rng based whether you'd beat it, I found cheese strats but that doesn't change my opinion on it. My issue with "Father and Son Shine!" is the boat, its not fun because id repeat segments cause of its flawed controls. While Corona Mountains "Father and Son Shine!" mission is the final episode so it should be hard, the boat segment makes it more artificial in its difficulty.

@Ardisan I agree, Corona Mountain felt a bit rushed even the first time I played it. Pianta Village and the other worlds are amazing. I really want a remaster/remake of this game and Super Mario 64.

@BlueOcean Sunshine would prob need a remake since the original used the analog triggers for the F.L.U.D.D. Switch doesn't use analog triggers so it would need a alternative that a remake can change. Also because it would make the beaches and other locations look extra beautiful.

Banjo-

@Ardisan True unless you aim with one stick and push water with the other but that would only work for first-person view. They MUST include a blue coins tracking system so a remake is needed anyway.

I really enjoy pinna pinna park and Noki noki bay from sunshine. Both levels had great music.
