I just realised that Donkey Kong Land marked pretty much the last game I had purchased on Virtual Console over the Wii, 3DS and Wii U to appear on Nintendo Switch Online. What's interesting are the gaps that are left
On the Wii VC I did get Alex Kidd in Miracle World which obviously isn't on NSO. Although I do have the remake so that kinda serves the same purpose. Also I did get Duck Hunt on the Wii U VC which hasn't appeared on NSO. Really, I think both it and Mario Paint probably should come to NSO
Then there are the Pokemon games. I forget which ones I picked up on 3DS but I definitely got at least Red I think? Either way, obviously not on NSO and still a huge gap in that library. I still think it should happen
The real interesting one but is Metroid Prime Trilogy. Which I got on the Wii U VC given it seemed like a fairly decent deal at the time compared to tracking down the disc. Obviously Switch has Prime Remastered but.... no 2 and 3.... and certainly not via NSO
I've been playing Solar Jetman on the NES app. Still a great game far ahead of its time - rough edges and tough sections (especially early on) notwithstanding.
I always remember playing it as a child it felt both uber NES and at the same time like it had come from somewhere else (you can very much see the finger prints of developers who'd worked on the Spectrum and other micro-computers). Playing on the NSO dramatically improves the experience of the game in a real meaningful way because it originally relied heavily on holding the select button to use the boosters (and secondary weapons). I've remapped the buttons so ZL is "select" and it feels really natural.
It's a shame that Rare never made a sequel - it would have been absolutely ripe for more exploration in lots of ways. Of course it's also slightly shocking to me that no indie developer has taken it upon themselves to make a spiritual sequel. It might as well have "turn me into a rougelike or a metroidvania " as the sub-title. I suppose the game just isn't well remembered enough to have a specific homage.
Starting to look like Nintendo's fast pacing of NSO releases may be over. As NES Tetris is already confirmed for December 12th, it may be the only release this week.
@PikminMarioKirby The comments section for the most recent Game Awards article reminded me that because of time zones, NES Tetris is the NSO drop that happens during the Game Awards. But yeah, it does look like there's still chance for NSO presence next week.
If it is not stuck in some ownership confusion, which I expect it is, I think Bubba + Sticks will get a release on Sega Mega Drive Online. It is just the kind of game nobody remembers or asked for that they would love to give! If it was a Snes game, I think Nintendo would probably have secured it by now!
Do we reckon that games added to the NSO on Switch 2 will also be on Switch?
If for example DS got added?
Because there's no reason why DS games couldn't also be added to Switch as well,
but they may well want it exclusive for the new console.
Sutte Hakkun is actually really good! It's a nice puzzle platformer with good music, and I finished the first 10 or so levels. It did take me a little while to get started since the entire game is in Japanese, the language barrier is the only thing I don't like. I made a restore point when I was done playing, just in case. Definitely a hidden gem on NSO's SNES catalog. I have yet to try out Ridge Racer 64, but I would like to at some point because I like racing games.
@Uncle_Franklin I think, if they find a way to implement alternate controls for the microphone, maybe just map the mic to one of the controller buttons. If I recall correctly, all the DS and 3DS games that I played that used the mic, they would just make me blow into it. I think that's the only big obstacle to overcome. I think there were a few DS games that had voice chat via the built-in mic, if memory serves me correctly, but I never had any games that had that. DS games would be great to have online. Especially those that didn't have Nintendo WFC support to begin with.

Favorite game: Super Mario 3D World
AKA MarioVillager92. Ask if you want to be Switch friends with me, but I want to get to know you first. Thanks! ❤️
I cannot express how much I appreciate the slow drip of N64 games, that will also not restart for the next Nintendo system.. Like I'm sure if I put in the time and effort I could find comparable ways to play a lot more games without doing keyboard laptop emulation where I consistently risk running into issues as bad as OOT at launch of NSO, but I don't, most people do not. This is my childhood system so having a way to just conveniently play a good quantity of games from it is something I will consistently appreciate, regardless of any issues I've had with it.
Tbh, I was worried after the 2nd time they announced a list of upcoming games that after those were out that was it outside of a couple of first party/Rare games, especially when they added GBA. Like I genuinely thought even for as slow as it can be, we would've gotten half the games we have in the past year or so. But ironically, N64 feels like its gotten the most games out of the Expansion Pass systems as of late. Even if we've yet to have gotten the non-Rare 3rd party games I'm most interested in, I maintain my point that every time an N64 game finally gets a re-release for the first time (on Nintendo or in general), it is just a very good thing. I don't like these games being stuck on N64 forever.
Only thing that annoys me, is that my appreciation for it can be and has been confused with me thinking it is a magical perfect system with no need for changes or alternatives. No I just like it, its not that deep.
I have around 100hrs played on SNES only. So many good games. I recommend ofc SMW, if you like puzzle Super Mario Picross (over 50 hrs already so much content) amazing, also Dr Mario but a bit crazy game no chill really lol. Tennis Mario on GB is v cool too (physics are awesome and its a sport RPG)
Hello, new subscriber here. I subscribed in order to buy the exclusive GCN controller, also in anticipation of those GCN games starting next month on Switch 2. So I didn't put any research into the service beforehand, I just assumed it would be great now that it's been running and growing for years. Here's my quick impressions:
I'm shocked by the amount of & selecion of games, N64 in particular. What is this? It's like 20 games, half of them the type that you used to see on fleamarkets for close to nothing because they were obiquitous but kinda bad. Also performance. I'd always wanted to check out F-Zero X, and even I can tell that it's badly emulated. There's stuttering.
@NintendoWife Did you have basic NSO before? The selection for snes/nes/gb is pretty impressive. Expansion Pack... not so much. At least the upcoming GameCube app will have a few great games. The NSO GBA app has a couple neat games, but there is a lot missing.
@FishyS I had the basic NSO for a while some years back, yes. Now I thought it's only logical that the more expensive tier would be better, didn't bother even looking at the available games list... my fault, but wow the selection is sparse. Yes I like Ocarina of Time and Mario 64, but beyond that I thought they'd give you much more to discover.
The poor emulation bothers me just as much. Doesn't feel good to play a game, provided by the creator no less, and knowing it's not faithful.
Im a huge fan of NSO. Not only because of houndreads of hours of playing retro games (and still counting), but also because that's how I first time ever played DKC games and immidiately became addicted. Now Im about to finish Tropical Freeze with oly the last world to beat, then Im buying Returns HD <3
