I think the difficulty was turned up for the demo as the devs stated they wanted to encourage use of as much strategy as possible.

That, coupled with the fact permadeath is not a thing, so the only way to lose is to have all your units die, and the fact that, if you start the game from the beginning, you’ll develop skills along the way with good tactics to use in later chapters, means the difficulty shouldn’t be prohibitively exhaustive in the full release.

I thought I was so clever to use the one unit to summon rain but I thought it would last for like a couple of turns and not the while battle. Oops.

Maybe it saved me anyway and I would've stupidly been killed by fire otherwise, I dunno.

This demo honestly continued my take that demos are sometimes not the best way to sell your game. This has everything going for it I think but how its presented made it obviously worse than the final experience will be. I have no idea why you would release a demo that's probably more story than gameplay, especially when you're mid-story like this. It's a weird way to do it. Like I understand why, with the upcoming survey, but most of my complaints would be based on how they presented this demo. To be fair, I maybe should've skipped most of the story but...part of the appeal of the gameplay is making major narrative choices so that feels counterintuitive (though in hindsight, I went with the easier choice I wouldn't have chosen in the full game anyway...)

The best demo experience I've ever had was the Dragon Quest XI demo. It started you at the very beginning, let you play for an insane amount of time, and let you carry over your progress. I don't know why Square Enix is giving us these demos recently where they plop us in the middle of complex games and throw tons of story and systems at us suddenly. It's not an enjoyable first experience for most people.

@JaxonH Good point on the difficulty. I think I do recall reading something about that. To be fair, the evening I attempted the second map wasn't the best; I hadn't had the best day at work and was already somewhat tired and cranky lol. My patience was a bit thinner than usual. I noped out of the battle during my second attempt; I didn't quite die, but I'd already lost over half my units and didn't foresee the match ending well. I'd seen enough of the game by that point that I didn't feel I needed to finish the demo in order to leave accurate impressions.

I am glad permadeath isn't a thing in this game, plus the full game will definitely ease players in better without dropping them in the middle of the fire. Almost literally. XD

@Snaplocket I suspect there will be multiple difficulty modes in the full game. This demo features an early build and is intentionally still rough around the edges for player feedback. While I don't like that they plopped us in the middle of the actual story - I would've rather they showcased the decision-making and persuading via a smaller, self-contained plot - they do a good enough job of giving you just enough material to make adequate decisions.

Oh man, I love the artwork! Did you play FF Tactics back in the day? It's very VERY similar artwork.

Love the art style. It's like Octopath, which is a terrific look.

LOTS of jibber-jabber. I fast forwarded past most of it because I just wanted to get to the gameplay, but there is TONS of dialog in this game, which would be fine if it told a great story, but video games so rarely do that it's almost always a waste of time.

Gameplay is decent enough, but the one battle I played seemed very slow and drawn out. It doesn't help that there are so many units in play. Reducing the number by half would help speed things up. It also didn't strike me as particularly challenging even though the difficulty was supposedly ramped up for the demo. Maybe the drawbridge battle is just really easy? But the demo is from several chapters into the full game, so I would expect the enemy to put up a better fight.

This won't be a day one purchase for me, but I suppose it's worth keeping an eye on.

I really enjoyed the demo and have replayed it a few times and I want to replay it more. The difficulty seemed on target and the enemies were not too dumb. The first encounter was easy but it is the intro for the demo. Encounter two and three were fun and tougher. I like the character abilities all of the roles have fun unique things. I hope there are many more characters to use with unique tricks and roles.

Both excited and actuall anxious about this game.

In-game choices are always a huge thing for me as I always worry what impact they could have or what I could end up missing. Especially for a lengthy game I doubt I would replay.

@BruceCM Can't wait. We just had our first child Aug 1st, so my video game time has massively decreased. Well none existance right now. So hopefully by then, I can get some gaming time in.

Triangle strategy being the actual title seems like the devs were like "we can't come up with a better name, so we'll just stuck stick with it."

I thought people might have been
exaggerating about that demo but nope. Wow, way to make me completely disinterested in your game by just making the demo so hard it's borderline unplayable.

lol what

Like I'm not even particularly good at tactics games, and I still beat the demo fine.

I enjoyed the demo but I am excited for the QoL changes they are making.

Yea...uhm... the demo was not that challenging. Too much narrative, in my opinion, but the challenge was fine.

I wonder if the people finding this too difficult have played the original FF Tactics?

rallydefault

BruceCM

Well, I only got to play War of the Lions version of that, @rallydefault .... Certainly can't say I found the Triangle Strategy demo too difficult, though
I did think it'd have been better if it was the start of the game, so you weren't plunged straight into the middle of things. If it'd been the beginning, you'd probably have a couple of people for the 1st battle & not many skills or abilities, so all that could be introduced
So, it seems they listened to feedback on the demo & I expect there'll be a new version of that nearer the release of the full game

@BruceCM
Oh, I 100% agree they should have started at the beginning of the game for the demo. Bravely Default 2 did the same thing with their demo, and I thought that was dumb.

rallydefault

BruceCM

Yeah, it'd help more with this game, though, @rallydefault .... Especially since I imagine they do want to persuade people who never played any of the FFT games, etc
But we'll see if they do another demo incorporating the feedback before the full game releases, as I expect
