So, now that a new Metroid game is on the horizon, I thought it would be a good time to improve Samus Aran's design, without the power suit; aka "Zero Suit Samus".

Canonically (as stated in Nintendo Power http://i.imgur.com/6GMr75j.png) Samus Aran is 6'3'' tall and weighs 198 lbs. So maybe Zero Suit Samus should look more like this:

This physique would match the one of a bounty hunter. As stated in official material "The Power Suit hides a strong, muscular woman", so it would be fitting if the actual in-game model of Samus without the Power Suit reflected this description.

Now, I don't expect this to change in Prime 4, but one can hope. Who knows? Maybe Samus will return to her tough and buff roots in the next Metroid game.

I really don't think that Zero Suit Samus will ever look like that. Her being in smash and the other games the way she always looks I think many people wouldn't be happy about that

I hope she looks like a Samus Aran in a Metroid Prime 4 video game, coming soon to a Nintendo Switch near you!

Muscular doesn't imply looking like a body-builder though. A bounty hunter need to be agile, flexible and fast, so the more appropriate body-type would probably be something from athletics or gymnastics. Which the current model pretty much already reflects.

She does look like a pretty generic Aryan woman under the armor. They could definitely do more to get away from tropes of female characters designed to be attractive to onlookers rather than realistic. As other people have stated, she doesn't have to be ripped, but something like having abs (see AoT Mikasa) and definition in her arms as legs (as opposed to just smooth flesh) would go a long way toward making her feel like a plausible character.

Unless the point is that she's useless without the Chozo Power Suit which was not conveyed by Zero Mission and Smash at all.

@Tsurii Hey, I know Mikasa's pretty one-dimensional, but that's one more dimension than Samus presently who never even talks in modern games. Don't call something bait just because you disagree with it.

Another good example would be Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, who actually looks like someone who's been in the military even in a star-spangled short skirt (which I would argue that the Zero Suit is still even worse than).

I really don't think they should make her look like a female bodybuilder on steroids like the pictures above show. Toning her a bit would be fine, but please don't give her a physique quite a few men would be jealous of, lol.

It must be very hard to stay in the exact right shape to fit in that armor.

Specially considering it was probably made for bird people.

TBH I'd be happy if they made her look exactly like how she did in Other M. Now that game was horrible to many people, but that game gave an ideal Samus IMO. The looks of a woman and of a body Hunter perfectly balanced. Although I'd prefer if Nintendo took that as a base model and improvised.

It would be interesting if Prime 4 took place after Fusion and had the Fusion suit in 3D (which I believe has already been done in the original with bonus content).

@Tsurii I couldn't possibly have known that you have such a giant random hate for Mikasa when I wrote my post. Please respect that fact and drop it.

Anyway, I haven't watched / read that much Fairy Tail to know what you mean. From what I saw of that show, I have no doubt it's extremely dumb.

But — again — I have to stress that it's impossible to be a worse character than a silent protagonist. Samus is obviously more iconic than a bunch of anime and TV characters, but in terms of depth... there is very little. She was a more developed character in Other M and I think Fusion. That doesn't mean that was the right way to develop her character, but there was something there that made her a little bit deeper than her appearance. Literally anything creates a deeper character than a silent protag.

@Haru17 But... something that defines Samus is being silent. That doesn't mean she's not getting character development (although I do admit is just very little) but that's kind of the point with her from my perspective. Samus isn't the classic character that will narrate or share every aspect of her life because it isn't something that fits the few things we know about her and because it would affect the tense atmosphere that Metroid games are known for. Fusion and Zero Mission did it right, showing her thoughts and memories only at certain times because she's normally focused and a few things trigger them. Other M on the other hand, was doing this too much while yet trying to keep her stoic, making some weird combination that really didn't work as good as they expected.

I know many disagree with me, but I think that the little character development is what sets Samus apart from others. We all know there's more than just being a stoic badass behind her, and our reward is to find out the very little things she has to tell us or show us. That doesn't mean her character development is bad, in fact I have found it great. It's just painfully slow, and I think it's intended to be that way and that it works perfectly with the games.

About the redesign, I think she's perfect as she is now. To me, it makes sense that she looks like a beautiful fit woman that could be even considered too delicate when people that don't know her expect a man or a really muscular woman behind the suit. Samus has a strong physique for her appearance but her true strength comes from her mentality.
