@Buizel I really don't know man... I think that's kind of the point. Dragon Quest doesn't try to reinvent itself like Final Fantasy does. In a world where RPGS are sometimes trying too hard to be different and having new mechanics and such. I also really like the artstyle, character designs and bright colors. It never takes itself too seriously which is something I don't always like in stories (depends on the writing). I always know I can expect the same level of quality in Dragon Quest. But Dragon Quest was never really popular over here anyways.

Most fighting games that aren't Smash. Too much focus on esports such that most of these games don't even have a proper single player mode.

@Grumblevolcano I guess that's something I can agree with and why I don't buy fighting games. Sure a pro player is going to get his money's worth from the game but what am I suppose to do... just play versus matches with myself or get my ass handed to me online... I loved the missions in Smash.

@KaiserGX I think that's where I fundamentally disagree with the whole concept. To me the appeal of JRPGs are their stories and/or in-depth mechanics. If a JRPG lacks both of those I just don't see the point.

At least 2'8".

@Buizel Dragon Quest VIII was a little better in that regard (it had a decent story and some unique mechanics), but yeah, that sense of... plainness was still there. And that's supposedly one of the best games in the entire series.

At the same time, there is a charm to having simplicity. It's why Mario platformers are still widely considered some of the best in the class despite their simplicity. And while RPGs can suffer a bit from having simplistic stuff, you also gain a form of elegance in doing so, in a way.

Though I guess you can make the argument that there's a difference between being plain and being simple.

Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill
