I don't even care. "Friendly rival" has become another fandom trigger word like "handholding".

I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!

Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.

So... Gladion?

More pushy, unintentionally rude at times. 😉

I'll definitely pick this up. If only because I like the look of Pokemon in HD. I liked Pokemon Go! as well as mainline Pokemon so maybe this title will give some of the best of both games.

What I would like in a new Pokémon game is to be able to move the camera freely around the character, but in Let's Go it seems to be locked as in previous games (hope you understand what I mean, English isn't my native tongue).

I would also wish for the battles to be more dynamic and the battle animations more lively and varied. For example it still seems that Blastoise don't shoot water from his cannons (0:48): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=521ZrPboYQE

I'm still not sure what to think about this game, but hopefully there will be some kind of demo before it's released.

@Quarth Free camera most certainly wasn't going to happen here. It would have been neat if they had actually reimagined Kanto in a non-GB framework, but instead they went down the road of pretty much making GB Kanto in 3D (2.5D).

As long as Generation 8 games build upon Sun/Moon (which's region was much more 3D in design), a free camera could be a next logical step.

Also it is funny you bring the animations up. One would think that if they're going to have to give us another Kanto remake with the same boring ol' limited 151 Pokemon, they could at least put the detail into making the moves' animations actually match the design of each individual Pokemon. But nope, they can't even do that. It's something I can't fault them too much when they're dealing with - what is it? 800 Pokemon or so... But it's just really inexcusable when they have such a low amount of Pokemon in the game, period. But LGP/E are cheaply done games in every way, so of course they wouldn't put that attention to detail. Wayyyy too much to expect, I guess. You know what else is way too much to expect? $60 for these games.

@Harmonie Yeah, there's a lot of things that could be done to shake up the old formula without altering it too much. I don't know how conservative Pkmn fans are in general, but surely my suggestions aren't that radical?

@Quarth I'm all for better designed battle animations. It doesn't have to be a lot, but distinguishing between a kick and a punch would be nice. And some unique cases like Blastoise and its cannons.

I don't really care about a controllable camera. I don't think it adds a lot to the type of game Pokemon is. GameFreak aren't the most competent developers out there either, and I feel like that if they focus too much on designing the entire map from every angle, some other aspects of the game will get the short end of the stick. It's kinda low on my personal priority list.

@Octane I don't know about GF's (in)competence, but looking at how ugly some aspects of the games are, I believe you. But still I think it would be nice to have a freer camera.

The battle animations are a bit lazy though.

@Quarth The games are quite simple, top-down, no physics involved, simple art style. And all of that is fine, I just don't see them making the drastic jump to the game everyone always wanted. Not this soon at least. I expect the next game to look different, but still very familiar, like a Pokemon game. The been there, done that kind of game. But we'll see, colour me surprised if it's anything more than that.

It's just that when you look at these games, remakes of Yellow, they didn't have to design a new region, new Pokemon, new moves, new characters, nothing. Just in 3D, but with a lighting system that wasn't possible on 3DS. And it's still a €60 game

I'd like them clean up the metagame. Their answer to everything so far has been ''more, more, more''. It's a power creep. Something that inevitable when you're introducing new 'mons, abilities and moves. But something that should be balanced by nerfing Pokemon where necessary. Why can every Pokemon learn Toxic? Doesn't make any sense, keep it exclusive to the Poison types and a few bugs and a handful of other exceptions. Would make the Poison type a lot more useful, you didn't need a new type to fix that. The more moves they can learn, the more samey each Pokemon becomes. Pokemon like Seaking? Completely useless, because it's outclassed by virtually every other Water Pokemon. By keeping moves limited to certain Pokemon, you increase their usefulness. Want a certain combination of moves? That's only possible on Seaking, raising its usefulness, instead of having a dozen other options with better abilities and stats.

I'm not asking them to make Delibird useful in battle, just a bit more balance. And why can't Zangoose learn Cut after all this time?!

@Octane At least the SunMoon region didn't really add much for meta because they're too slow?

(From what I remember the only ones that went into metas are the UltraBeasts...)

@Octane Yeah, one thing about modern Pkmn games is that they contain too much. That's one of the reasons the series lost me. I haven't played Sun and Moon, but got Pokémon X, and while I played far into the game, I suddenly lost interest in it. The magic was gone (this coming from someone who was a huge Pkmn nerd around gen 1-2-3) and I also found the online trading system to be broken with a lot of cheaters. It took the fun out of it.

@darkfenrir Yeah, not sure what happened there! Looks like they tested all the Pokemon in isolation against each other. Which was probably fine, until they added the rest and seemed to forget that the average speed stat is around 80 and not 20

@Quarth Yeah, I'm always a big fan of simplicity in games. I wouldn't mind it if they scrapped the mega evolutions and z-moves and just focused on the regular Pokemon and the regular attacks. Seems a lot more fair too!

Octane

darkfenrir

@Octane Maybe they thought they are powercreeping too much

It's seriously annoying when the pokedex of a pokemon said it moves so fast... then the speed is only 60 or something. (Vikavolt I think?)

@Octane I love it how you make an extensive argument about how Pokemon are able to learn too many moves, but end the argument with the complaint that Pokemon 'x' still can't learn move 'y'

@toiletduck It's all rather clever, isn't it?

No, but seriously. Cut makes a million times more sense than Giga Drain, Thunder Wave, Shadow Ball, Curse, Fire Blast, Solar Beam, Ice Punch, Rain Dance, Shock Wave, etc. Why? It just doesn't make any sense at all. They just slap some moves on a Pokemon and call it a day. Any sense of in-game logic is gone.

Octane

toiletduck

@Octane I totally agree with you; a lot op the little critters just seem to get stuck with the wrong moves. It just came over funny, the way you phrased it.

Map design is the biggest area where this series needs to improve. The linear hallway maps we've been seeing in Kalos and Alola simply don't cut it for a console game, they need to seriously open things up. It says a lot when games like Mario 64 and OoT, which are as old as Pokemon itself, are even outdoing Pokemon in this department, let alone more modern takes on those experiences like BotW and Odyssey.

The difference with OoT and 64 was just that.

64.

Sure they are as old as Pokemon, but they were on hardware that could do more than hallways.

Nowadays sure, but back then? Shows age has nothing to do with it.
