I view these more as an experimental "we're getting our feet wet and trying new things" before next year's planned Gen 8 games. They know there's more riding on the 2019 titles.

I still don't really know what to think of these games. Guess I'll find out soon!
Agreed. My impressions are more positive than they were pre-E3, but I'd like to read/see/hear some constructive feedback from those who haven't written these games off already.

I grew up with Pokemon Red/Blue and Yellow. I also played Gen 2 and Gen 3 a bit but after that, I didn't playe any other Pokemon game. When the Pokemon Go hype started, I really liked it with the Pokemon I knew (Gen 1).
After many years of not playing a Pokemon game, I really get excited to see this version of Yellow. I will pick this up because I grew up with Gen 1 and Kanto.
So far the only big change has been the removal of random wild battles, I don't think there's much hinting at any major changes to the battle system itself.
Talking about Freeze, I was thinking it would be nice if they change that status condition. I’ve always found it to be poorly designed.
As it’s uncommon with no direct means of inflicting it, it’s a pretty busted condition. It’s essentially sleep but with more RNG. It would be cool if they made it its own thing and fleshed it out.
Like make it so instead of immobilizing the Pokémon it lowers the defenses of a frozen Pokémon while lowering their priority by 1. Making it unique yet similar to other ailments. Something cool like that while distributing its application more. I like it when games flesh out their mechanics like that.
Personally I don’t really mind depending on the character. Like out of all the ‘mean’ (out of the 2) ones, Silver was the only one I really understand stood because of his progression and his uniqueness. I get the idea of wanting to hate them, but I’m not sure.
While characters like Bianca and to lesser extents Barry and Cheren were all memorable despite being friendly (for the most part).
I remember that when they started introducing friendly rivals, I thought it was a nice change of pace. Silver's attitude at least made sense, but I always thought Blue was a bit too arrogant. Now, I kind of wish they'd throw us at least one actual rival who isn't a jerk really, but can be competitive and pushy.
Some of the nice rivals mentioned above were pretty memorable.

@Tyranexx Hugh, who is blatently obsessed with Team Plasma and his own goals over being your friend. Barry, who is obsessed with being ahead of you while still being friendly. Gladion, who is a jerk with a heart of gold, and actually Hau in Ultra, who laments being stuck behind and eventually catches up and takes battling very seriously, while still being friendly.

Hugh was obsessive yes, but I don't recall him being too pushy unless it came to his sister and her Purrloin/Liepard.
I was more or less alluding to another character like Barry. He was a fun rival and is perhaps one of my favorites in the while series.
As for Gladion, I never really considered him as a rival in the story, more like an anti-hero of sorts with his own agenda that you battled from time to time. He would fit the bill I guess....TBH, I sort of wished that Lily had returned with some Pokemon near the end (I don't count Nebby). She would have made a fun rival. Perhaps she'll return?....
Hau was almost...too laid back for me? Granted, the game did address that (In Sun anyway; haven't played my copy of Ultra Sun yet), and he did take battling a little more seriously when the time called for it. He seemed kinda generic, but I liked him slightly better than the friend group that X/Y offers.
Basically, I'd like a pushy yet competent rival that is at least somewhat friendly, down to earth, and isn't a smug, obnoxious narcissist.
