Anyone playing this? I'm about 50 puzzles in on regular picross mode. Obv it's not too different from earlier iterations, but they've really modernised the look of the thing.

Not sure if this was added in later Picross E games, or an option I didn't explore in the first two, but I like how you can turn off all hints to go for a 'no assist' star on the puzzle, which then gives you a different ribbon for each page you complete. Nice touchange.

150/150 normal and 30/150 mega picross done. Turned off all the hints, of course, and sped up the cursor movement by one. Presentation is good. I like the music. It gives me an Ace Attorney vibe. I just wish there were more puzzles. I played Picross 2 (Japan only GB game) couple of months ago and it had about 1000 15x15 puzzles. I prefer smaller puzzles but I still wish there were 20x20 and 25x20 puzzles as well since the screen on Switch is bigger than on the 3DS.

It's its, not it's.

A preview I read stated that Picross S did not use the touchscreen - is this correct? I've never used the physical controls on the DS/3DS (or ANY other) versions, including ones I've written myself for mobile platforms.

How similar/different are the physical controls to the 3DS versions? I want Picross S, but I really don't want to use physical controls - they seem counter-intuitive to me.

@zitpig That's correct. There are no touch controls which is weird but I personally play just as fine with buttons. I'm just as fast with buttons as I'm with stylus.

I own Picross e and e2 but I always played with stylus so I can't say how different it is compared to that. If you've played Mario's Picross or its sequels, the controls feel very close to those after changing cursor speed by one. The only thing that irks me a little is fixing a spot since it takes a bit too much time to be able to fill a square after removing a cross and vice versa. It's not instant for some reason. I don't think anyone else would even notice it though.

I tried multiplayer yesterday as well and I like that you can compete with the other person since the game counts how many squares each player has filled. It plays fine as a 2 player experience. There's one major flaw though. Both players can't be on same square and that results in filling and crossing wrong squares since you think you moved to a spot but actually you bumped into the other player and didn't move to the spot you wanted to.

It's its, not it's.

Thanks for your feedback

I wouldn't play this as a multiplayer, so that wouldn't be a problem for me, but I understand what you mean.

I have played Mario Picross (many, many years ago - I even did a remake of it - http://div-arena.co.uk/games/view/88), but I've played better Picross games since, all with touchscreen or mouse controls and never physical.

If it had touchscreen control it would have been a no-brainer, however, I think I'll give this a miss for now - too many other games vying for attention. If the price comes down in a sale though I'll probably take a punt - or if it does get an update with touchscreen control...

Cheers

@zitpig Nice to see someone else who likes Picross enough to make their own versions of the game. I've programmed two Picross games in C++ as well as designed over 300 puzzles. My avatar is one of them. It's actually a fully functional answer for a puzzle.

I actually like Mario's Picross and its sequels more than Jupiter's later Picross games. They had more puzzles, the puzzle solutions looked nicer (didn't need color to be recognizable) and Picross 2 was divided into worlds with themes (horror, comics, jobs, etc.). Picross S continues the trend where half of the puzzles need to be solved and in color before they are recognizable and Mega Picross are just the same 150 puzzles you've already solved but the solving process is a bit different. Picross e series as well as Picross S are still fun but they're basically making the same game with different puzzles.

It's its, not it's.

I've done a few Picross games - Mario Picross was just the first I did. My last was for the Pandora, three years ago - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1yC46ja0Q8 (YouTube vid is 30FPS, real game was 60FPS).

I do love a bit of Picross, and the PicrossE series has scratched that itch for the most part. They are expensive considering how little work actually goes into making a Picross game, but I'm willing to support them. Shame that Picross S doesn't support me

I've never seen a Picross game crash before. Well, there's a first time for everything. I had to restart my Switch. I couldn't even take a screenshot of the crash screen I got.

It's its, not it's.

Weird! Probably in my top 5 'least likely to crash' games
