@ALinkToMyProfile The crossover concept for TMS#FE was abandoned pretty early on. It's essentially just a Persona-lite Atlus JRPG set in the modern Japanese entertainment industry that uses names, characters, and concepts associated with the Fire Emblem franchise. Go in with that understanding, and you'll probably like it well enough. There's precious little recognizable MegaTen influence in that game, though, aside from spell and item names and other similarly shallow similarities.

@ALinkToMyProfile I haven't gotten around to finishing Persona 3 but there were some small nods to it if I remember correctly, as Ralizah said for MegaTen (a franchise I know even less about). I would recommend the game though if you like the Persona series as there are some similarities. I found it enjoyable. Persona x Pokemon would be a cool crossover, I have to say.

I'm still amazed that this will be the first Atlus published title on Switch.

@Toy_Link : I just really want a Trauma Centre game on Switch. Something. Anything. Even a port/collection will do.

However, if they are feeling ambitious, I think they can pull off some incredible things with the IR camera and HD rumble. Perhaps the left Joy-Con can simulate the beating of the heart when placed inside a medical dummy accessory to indicate the condition of the patient, and any sudden movements to the left Joy-Con as a result of rough handling of the medical dummy could affect the overall health of the patient as well. Meanwhile, the right Joy-Con's IR camera can be as an instrument (or instruments) in the surgical process, which would correspond to what is depicted onscreen (or whatever else the designers come up with).

Similarly, I think that they could have pulled off some great things on Wii U with its unique dual-screen set-up, but sadly, a lot of concepts/brands that could have really benefited from two screens hadn't seen the light of day.

Wow! This is a Japanese trailer, but it's worth watching. Now, I could be reading more into this than is really there, but so far I'm noticing cutscenes, free roam areas, social events... this straight up looks like a full-blown Persona 5 sequel with dynasty warriors combat in place of dungeons.

EDIT: More details from Nintendo Everything:

– Action RPG
– Completely new story set after the events of Persona 5
– The game is developed by the Persona Team in collaboration with Omega Force

Yeah, this does look pretty cool. If nothing else, Scramble will be a trip for the eyes and ears. My main concern would be that this runs on Switch like FE Warriors ran on 3DS - but I'm not one to get hung up 60fps and 1080p anyway. Looking forward to the reviews, now.

man, Scramble looks great but I can't bring myself to buy it when I didn't play P5 :/ (and worried that I won't enjoy it since I played Extella)

Grumblevolcano

It looks like it'll be very good for people who played and liked Persona 5 but kind of meaningless for everyone else. I'll skip unless Persona 5 comes to Switch which is looking very unlikely at this point.

@Krull I'm guessing 720p/600p and 30fps for the Switch version, but we'll see. I have no idea how good Atlus is at optimizing games for the Switch.

@darkfenrir @Grumblevolcano It could be a case where it's enjoyable as its own story like The Witcher 3.

darkfenrir

@Ralizah If that's the case then I'm more likely to buy it

Although I still worry that it'll be repetitive :/ I can't get through like, first 3 hours of Fate/Extella (granted it's both the gameplay being so long that the stage becomes boring and the story didn't manage to hook me)

darkfenrir

Ralizah

@darkfenrir I was less enthused when I thought it was a Persona-themed DW game. This looks like Persona 5-2 with musou combat, which is something I can be much more excited about.

(DEMO IMPRESSIONS)

Persona 5 Scramble

Untitled

The Japanese demo for Persona 5 Scramble went live on the Nintendo eshop in Japan today, so I thought I'd go ahead and download it on my Switch Lite. The demo is an hour or two long and features a few different combat encounters, as well as a rudimentary boss fight. It's also quite dialogue-heavy, like Persona 5 itself.

So, the first thing to get out of the way is that, yes, this feels more like a Persona game than a themed Dynasty Warriors spinoff. While I've not seen any evidence of the social sim gameplay thus far (going to school, studying, getting a job, etc.), the presentation, focus on dialogue and story development, music, and even dungeon-crawling all feel like they're ripped straight out of Persona 5. There still seem to be explorable 3D environments outside of palaces as well, suggesting that there might be a larger focus on the social aspect than was presented in the demo.

Untitled

The combat itself is interesting. The battle at the very beginning of the demo does take place across a giant, Dynasty Warriors-esque arena, but subsequent combat encounters an hour or two later happened mostly organically as I was exploring a small dungeon. One of the interesting aspects of combat is that there's no transition to any sort of special battle screen or arena. You fight in the environments where you initiate combat and, when the battles are done, you just go back to exploring with no pause or delay.

Combat is a mix of real time and menu-based elements. Your basic attacks, mapped to the Y and X face buttons, can be combined into some rudimentary combos. At any point throughout a battle, though, you can pause time by squeezing your right shoulder button and target nearby enemies with Persona skills. Like in the main game, these do additional damage if the enemy is weak to your skills. Additionally, when you knock down a group of enemies by targeting their weaknesses, you can engage in group attacks (similar to the all-out attacks in Persona 5) to take them out quickly. Some enemies, such as ones hidden behind shields, are harder to damage, but, in an inspired twist, you can actually interact with your environments mid-battle, jumping onto platforms and ledges in order to spring a special attack on your enemies. It's also worth mentioning that, by holding down the L shoulder button, you can pause time and target enemies with your gun.

Untitled

When I faced off against a weak first boss, I discovered that, by hitting its weakness with an attack, I could employ a version of the "one more" mechanic from Persona 5 and attack again to inflict additional damage. There's also some sort of flashy super attack you can employ against bosses which are, visually, very similar to the all-out attacks in the main Persona 5 game.

I wanted to quickly mention that most of the RPG aspects of Persona 5 seem to be included here. Personas can learn new skills and level up. Characters level up. And the Velvet Room is still a thing, suggesting that it might be possible to fuse Personas. With that said, one change I was unhappy to see is that demon negotiation seems to be gone in Persona 5 S. Instead, after certain battles, mask icons will drop on the ground, giving you access to new Personas.

Untitled

Performance is fairly strong in Persona 5 Scramble's undocked mode. While it's clearly not running at the buttery smooth 60fps seen in the PS4 footage, it's a stable enough 30fps that I never really thought twice about it while I was playing.

Image quality... could be better, though. Cutscenes, both in-engine and of the animated variety, looked great on my Switch Lite, but the actual character models, menus, text bubbles, and whatnot are fraught with jaggies. Lots of aliasing, to the point where characters not close to the screen look very messy on-screen. I'm not sure if this is due to it running at a low resolution or what, but it honestly sort of feels like playing a PS2 game. Persona 5's strong art direction keeps it from being too aggravating, but people concerned with visual fidelity might want to keep this in mind.

Untitled

The music in the demo is mostly very catchy remixes of songs from the base game. It's going to be another very strong OST from Atlus. There are also a variety of interesting new characters who are introduced in the demo, so I'm looking forward to learning more about them.

Story-wise, my understanding of spoken and written Japanese is extremely limited, and I wasn't exactly keen on battling my way through an hour or so worth of untranslated dialogue, but the game is a direct sequel to Persona 5. The characters are going on a summer vacation, but a mysterious new phone app, the reappearance of explorable palaces, and an AI girl named Sophia introduce new mysteries to the former phantom thieves.

Untitled

It's worth mentioning that I've only played the demo on my Switch Lite. I do plan on downloading it to my dockable model at home and updating this post if there are any image quality improvements to be had that way. Overall, though, it was a pleasant enough experience, and I'm glad Atlus seems to have focused on delivering a smooth level of performance for their upcoming action-RPG.

Buizel

@Ralizah good to hear these impressions. As much as I've liked previous Warriors-style spinoffs, I'm very happy to see this is going to be more Personafied.

I've started the demo but quickly realised I'm not going to get much out of it in Japanese. I'm a big P5 fan so will be buying this regardless.

And I will say - image quality unfortunately isn't any better in docked mode. If anything the aliasing will be more apparent - the jagged edges are quite jarring after playing P5 the PS4.

At least 2'8".

Ralizah

@Buizel Ahh, that sucks. While I'm happy to see games like this being optimized with handheld mode in mind, I really wish developers would use the extra juice in docked mode to even out the rougher edges in games like this.

Well, no biggie. It still looks and plays better than a Vita port would have.

I just wish that they already announce it outside of Japan release, because now we know it's only coming in Japan and I wish to play it in Europe.
PS if Persona 5 Royal won't come to Nintendo Switch by 2021, then I most likely will buy PS5.

With the success of Hyrule Warrios AoC, it makes me wonder if P5S is going to fare as well? Roughly 500k copies have sold in Japan and Asia since launch in February. With preorders now live for western retailers, I hope the western release sells at least double that.

Can we get the title changed to the western name, Persona 5 Strikers and link it to the game for search result hits?

Only 60 more days!

I’m so glad this game is getting a Switch steelbook case. It’s incredible. I want two just to display both sides. And, preordering from Best Buy not only gives you the steelbook, but half of the digital deluxe version content- digital art book, soundtrack, behind the scenes video.

Just started playing this game yesterday, I'm only a couple hours in and absolutely loving it. It genuinely feels like a Persona 5 sequel and not just some half-baked spinoff. The combat flows really well and I think they did a great job integrating all the Persona elements. If the game can keep up this momentum it might end up being one of my favourite Switch games.

Shame I can't get the game for another few weeks. I usually get one game a month and this time I spent my money on 3D World. But my March game is absolutely going to be P5S, because of how large it is and how faithful it is to Persona 5. I have some of the music on my computer and by GOD it is good. April game might be Monster Hunter if I'm being honest.
